Complex Systems: an Interdisciplinary Approach
2011
Two main peculiarities characterize complex systems: the nonlinearity and the noisy environmental interaction. The comprehension of noise role in the dynamics of nonlinear systems plays a key aspect in the efforts devoted to understand and model so-called complex systems.
Generation of hierarchically correlated multivariate symbolic sequences: With an application to the assessment of bootstrap confidence in phylogeneti…
2008
We introduce a method to generate multivariate series of symbols from a finite alphabet with a given hierarchical structure of similarities based on the Hamming distance. The target hierarchical structure of similarities is arbitrary, for instance the one obtained by some hierarchical clustering method applied to an empirical matrix of similarities. The method that we present here is based on a generating mechanism that does not make use of mutation rate, which is widely used in phylogenetic analysis. Here we use the proposed simulation method to investigate the relationship between the bootstrap value associated with a node of a phylogeny and the probability of finding that node in the tru…
An integrated methodological approach for optimising complex systems subjected to predictive maintenance
2021
Abstract The present paper addresses the relevant topic of maintenance management, widely recognised as a fundamental issue involving complex engineering systems and leading companies towards the optimisation of their assets while pursuing cost efficiency. With this regard, our research aims to provide companies with a hybrid methodological approach based on Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) capable to deal with the main failures potentially involving complex systems subjected to predictive maintenance. Such an approach is going to be integrated within the framework of traditional Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), whose strengths and weaknesses are considered. In pa…
Complex dynamics of leukemic cells under intermittent therapy
2009
The evolutionary dynamics of cancerous cell populations in a model of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is investigated. A Monte Carlo approach is applied to model the cancer development and progression by simulating the stochastic evolution of initially healthy cells which can experience genetic mutations and modify their reproductive behavior, becoming leukemic clones. Front line therapy for the treatment of this kind of tumor is achieved by tyrosine kinase inhibitors, namely imatinib (Gleevec) or, more recently, dasatinib or nilotinib. Despite they represent the first example of a successful molecular targeted therapy, the development of resistance to these drugs is observed in a proportion…
On the determination of coherent solar climates over a tropical island with a complex topography
2020
Abstract Many tropical islands aim at developing a greener self-sufficient energy production systems based on renewable energy, notably solar-generated electricity. This work explores the mean diurnal and annual solar cycles over La Reunion island (southwest Indian Ocean: 21°S, 55.5°E), and their spatial behavior, using the Solar surfAce RAdiation Heliosat – East (SARAH-E) satellite-derived data at high spatial ( 0.05 ° × 0.05 ° ) and time (hourly) resolutions over period 1999–2016. Comparisons of the SARAH-E data with ground-based measurements over the period 2011–2015 show differences of ~ 15 % for diurnal-seasonal variations. The solar resource over the island displays strong spatial var…

The invisible violence. The denial of relational trauma and its consequences in early childhood.
2016
Abstract The paper is aimed at the analysis of recognition and legitimacy problems, historically present in the study of psychological trauma, as well as to opening reflections on the possibility that these difficulties are still current. Recent contributions on the study of the developmental trauma disorder mainly highlight the importance of relational and cumulative aspects and during the developmental cycle when the subject experiences his/her traumatic events. Multiple exposures to interpersonal trauma in fact have a stronger impact on the first decade of life, resulting in predictable consequences on at least seven mental functioning areas. Several authors propose a new diagnostic labe…
Synthesis of a chiral rod-like metal–organic framework from a preformed amino acid-based hexanuclear wheel
2019
We report the two-step synthesis of a chiral rod-like metal-organic framework (MOF). The chemical approach consists on the use of a previously prepared oxamato-based homochiral hexanuclear wheel, the ligand being a derivative of the natural amino acid l-alanine, with formula (Me4N)6{CuII6[(S)-alama])6}·10H2O (1) [where (S)-alama=(S)-N-(ethyl oxoacetate)alanine]. The anionic hexacopper(II) wheels, stabilized by the presence of templating tetramethylammonium counter-cations, disassemble in the presence of cationic square-planar [Ni(cyclam)]2+ complexes to yield, after a supramolecular reorganization process that involves axial coordination of the [Ni(cyclam)]2+ cations through the free carbon…
On the inductive inference of recursive real-valued functions
1999
AbstractWe combine traditional studies of inductive inference and classical continuous mathematics to produce a study of learning real-valued functions. We consider two possible ways to model the learning by example of functions with domain and range the real numbers. The first approach considers functions as represented by computable analytic functions. The second considers arbitrary computable functions of recursive real numbers. In each case we find natural examples of learnable classes of functions and unlearnable classes of functions.
Complexes de métaux de transition avec des ligands carbènes N-hétérocycliques : synthèses et réactivité
2015
The purpose of this work is the synthesis of complexes containing imine-functionalized protic NHC ligands in order to further develop synthetic methodologies giving access to pNHC, C-bound ‘anionic’ imidazolide, and homo- and heterodinuclear complexes. In the case of imidazoles without functional group, deprotonation with n-butyl lithium afforded (1-aryl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)lithium in good yield. Reaction of (1-aryl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)lithium with [Ir(cod)(μ-Cl)]2 or [Rh(cod)(μ-Cl)]2 yielded a doubly C2,N3-bridged dinuclear complex. In the case of imine-functionalized imidazole, the Ir(I) N-bound imidazole complex can tautomerize to Ir(I) imine-functionalized pNHC complex chloride abstraction at…
