Vaccination with TAT-Antigen Fusion Protein Induces Protective, CD8+ T Cell-Mediated Immunity Against Leishmania Major

2010

In murine leishmaniasis, healing is mediated by IFN-γ-producing CD4 + and CD8 + T cells. Thus, an efficacious vaccine should induce Th1 and Tc1 cells. Dendritic cells (DCs) pulsed with exogenous proteins primarily induce strong CD4-dependent immunity; induction of CD8 responses has proven to be difficult. We evaluated the immunogenicity of fusion proteins comprising the protein transduction domain of HIV-1 TAT and the Leishmania antigen LACK ( Leishmania homolog of receptors for activated C kinase), as TAT-fusion proteins facilitate major histocompatibility complex class I-dependent antigen presentation. In vitro , TAT–LACK-pulsed DCs induced stronger proliferation of Leishmania -specific C…

Mineralogical and Chemical Records of Icelandic Dust Sources Upon Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard Islands)

2018

This work aims to identify the geochemical and mineralogical markers of Icelandic dust and to differentiate it from the dust of local origin deposited at the Ny-Ålesund station. We characterized representative sediment samples from Iceland and Svalbard and compared them to a set of aerosol samples collected in Ny-Ålesund to check the existence and type of the mineralogical markers. The sediment samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to detect the mineralogical constrain of the geochemical markers. Both aerosol and sediment samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with EDS microanalysis (SEM-EDS) and image analysis to detect and to provide a morpho-chemical cha…

Computational study of dimethyl- and trimethyl-tin(IV) complexes of porphyrin derivatives

2001

The molecular geometry, energetics and electronic charge distribution of diorgano- and triorgano-tin(IV) complexes of [protoporphyrin-IX] and [meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine] derivatives were determined at semi-empirical and ab initio levels. To study the molecular details of the complexes, simpler molecule models were calculated by the ab initio pseudo-potential method. The molecular properties of these complexes are essentially independent of the presence of the peripheral tin atoms. Agreement was always found among the results of the different computational approaches, as well as between the theoretical and the experimental findings on the molecular geometry of the hypothesized comp…

Nanometric ion pair complexes of tobramycin forming microparticles for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis

2019

Abstract Sustained pulmonary delivery of tobramycin from microparticles composed of drug/polymer nanocomplexes offers several advantages against traditional delivery methods. Namely, in patients with cystic fibrosis, microparticle delivery can protect the tobramycin being delivered from strong mucoadhesive interactions, thus avoiding effects on its diffusion toward the infection site. Polymeric ion-pair complexes were obtained starting from two synthetic polyanions, through impregnation of their solid dissociated forms with tobramycin in aqueous solution. The structure of these polymeric systems was characterized, and their activities were examined against various biofilm-forming Pseudomona…

Psychopathology, Dissociation and Somatic Symptoms in Adolescents Who Were Exposed to Traumatic Experiences

2018

Background: The direct and long-term effects of children’s exposure to traumatic events can be seen in a complex continuum, based first of all on the type of trauma. Children’s reactions to trauma may have different manifestations from the clinical picture of the PTSD, exhibiting dissociative, somatic, depressive or anxiety symptoms, and/or disruptiveness. Aim: we conducted a cross-sectional study in a psychiatric patients sample to determine the extent to which complex trauma history is associated with disease-related characteristics (diagnosis, dissociative symptoms, somatic symptomatology, impairment degree). Methods: We have enrolled 107 subjects, aged between 12 and 18 years, who conse…

Using network community detection to investigate psychological and social features of individuals condemned for mafia crimes

2018

Objective: Only few studies have investigated social and personality characteristics of members of Italian organized criminal groups: Mafia, Camorra, ‘Ndrangheta, and Sacra Corona Unita. This study aimed to explore the most relevant social and clinical features of Mafia criminals and their psychopathic traits. Method: The Psychopathy Check List-Revised (PCL-R) and a socio-demographic questionnaire were administered to 30 condemned for Mafia crimes and imprisoned in the “Pagliarelli” district prison of Palermo (Italy). The results were investigated applying the methods of Network Theory. Results: The study identified two communities, which were statistically different in terms of history of …

Occupational cognitive complexity and episodic memory in old age

2021

The aim of this study was to investigate occupational cognitive complexity of main lifetime occupation in relation to level and 15-year change in episodic memory recall in a sample of older adults (≥ 65 years, n = 780). We used latent growth curve modelling with occupational cognitive complexity (O*NET indicators) as independent variable. Subgroup analyses in a sample of middle-aged (mean: 49.9 years) men (n = 260) were additionally performed to investigate if a general cognitive ability (g) factor at age 18 was predictive of future occupational cognitive complexity and cognitive performance in midlife. For the older sample, a higher level of occupational cognitive complexity was related to…

Teaching Public Administration Abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program

2011

The purpose of this article is to promote the benefits of the Fulbright Specialist Program—which was created in 2001 as a short-term complement to the Fulbright Scholar Program—and to encourage more public administration scholars to consider teaching abroad. After providing an overview of the Fulbright Specialist Program and the collaborative teaching approach we used for the preparation and delivery of instructional materials, it presents a number of lessons learned from the perspective of the Fulbright Specialist and the host institution for maximizing the experience of teaching abroad. This article also is dedicated to the work of Fulbright, which has pursued its mission to increase mutu…

Soot-exposed mononuclear cells increase inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression and protein secretion in cocultured bronchial epithelial cells.

2000

Background: Soot particles are air pollutants capable of inducing airway and lung parenchymal injury. Mononuclear and bronchial epithelial cells are central to the maintenance of homeostasis and inflammation in the airways. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of mononuclear cells to the release of inflammatory mediators by bronchial epithelial cells. Methods: To model the in vivo situation, an in vitro system of cocultured blood monocytes and BEAS-2B cells was established in a transwell system. Blood monocytes were exposed to soot particles (FR 101) at concentrations of up to 100 μg/106</su…
