Robotic non-destructive inspection
2012
Automation of non-destructive testing (NDT) of engineering components and structures represents one of the strategic objectives of many industries. It enables increases in accuracy, precision and speed of inspection while reducing production time and associated labour costs in contrast to manual inspection. The use of robots can provide additional flexibility and autonomy to automated NDT. Automated robotic inspection can be beneficial in diverse industrial scenarios ranging from integration of NDT into the manufacturing process of components with very complex geometry, such as gears, to periodical in-service overhaul of large structures (for instance, in petrochemical and aerospace industr…
Chitosan-heteropolyacid complex as high performance membranes for low temperature H2-O2 fuel cell
2014
Fabrication and Characterization of Chitosan-Heteropolyacid complex as membranes for low temperature H2-O2 fuel cell
2015
In this work we describe an easy procedure to fabricate homogeneous CS-HPA polyelectrolyte films using phosphotungstic acid (PTA) as cross-linking agent. The re action between CS chains and PTA is controlled in order to allow fabricating PEC thin films, that can be easily peeled off from the support, cut to any size and shape, whose thickness can be controlled by setting reticulation and time and/or chitosan concentration
Visible Light Induced Oxidation of Ferulic Acid by TiO2 Photocatalysis
2012
Oxidation of ferulic acid (C10H10O4) in aqueous medium occurs by using both commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples under visible light irradiation. Among the oxidation products vanillin was found with a selectivity ranging from 1 to 2% with respect to the converted substrate. By considering that TiO2 is unable to absorb visible light and ferulic acid does not react in the absence of TiO2, the observed photoactivity may be explained by the formation of a charge-transfer complex between ferulic acid and TiO2, being the complex able to absorb visible light. Among all the tested semiconductor oxides, only Merck anatase TiO2 does not perform the oxidation of ferulic acid under visible light i…
Telecom-compatible, affordable and scalable quantum technologies
2022
The realistic implementation of quantum architectures relies on the development of scalable, resource-efficient platforms that are compatible with CMOS technologies as well as fiber networks. This work demonstrates novel schemes utilized for time-/frequency-bin entanglement generation and processing by leveraging existing telecommunications and integrated photonics infrastructures.

A general theoretical framework for designing cognitive architectures: Hybrid and meta-level architectures for BICA
2012
In this paper, we will discuss hybrid architectures in which different processing modules coexist and cooperate in a principled way. A fundamental and essential role is played by modules performing meta-computation, i.e., computation about computation itself. Meta-level architectures, therefore, become an essential complement of hybrid architectures for biologically inspired cognitive architectures (BICA). Engineering and modeling BICAs is a hard task due to the lack of techniques for developing and implementing their features. We propose a new concept of intelligent agent as a useful abstraction for developing BICAs and having means for representing all the involved entities together with …
Cognitive meta-learning of syntactically inferred concepts
2011
This paper outlines a proposal for a two-level cognitive architecture reproducing the process of abstract thinking in human beings. The key idea is the use of a level devoted to the extraction of compact representation for basic concepts, with additional syntactic inference carried on at a meta-level, in order to provide generalization. Higher-level concepts are inferred according to a principle of simplicity, consistent with Kolmogorov complexity, and merged back into the lower level in order to widen the underlying knowledge base.
Decision Process in Human-Agent Interaction: Extending Jason Reasoning Cycle
2019
The main characteristic of an agent is acting on behalf of humans. Then, agents are employed as modeling paradigms for complex systems and their implementation. Today we are witnessing a growing increase in systems complexity, mainly when the presence of human beings and their interactions with the system introduces a dynamic variable not easily manageable during design phases. Design and implementation of this type of systems highlight the problem of making the system able to decide in autonomy. In this work we propose an implementation, based on Jason, of a cognitive architecture whose modules allow structuring the decision-making process by the internal states of the agents, thus combini…
