Biodiesel via in situ wet microalgae biotransformation: Zwitter-type ionic liquid supported extraction and transesterification

2017

The production of biodiesel derived from microalgae is among the most forthcoming technologies that provide an ecologic alternative to fossil fuels. Herein, a method was developed that enables the direct extraction and conversion of algal oil to biodiesel without prior isolation. The reaction occurs in aqueous media catalyzed by immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (Novozyme 435). Zwitter-type ionic liquids were used as cocatalyst to improve the selectivity and reactivity of the enzyme. In a model reaction with sunflower oil, 64% biodiesel was obtained. Applying this method to a slurry of whole-cell Chlorella zof ingiensis in water resulted in 74.8% of lipid extraction, with 27.7% biotra…

An overview of the traditional and innovative approaches for pectin extraction from plant food wastes and by-products: Ultrasound-, microwaves-, and …

2018

Abstract Background A large amount of food wastes and by-products are produced from farm to plate. They represent valuable sources for the production of high-added value compounds such as pectin. Pectin is the methylated ester of polygalacturonic acid and presents a wide range of applications in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products as well as in food industry such as gelling agent in fruit-based products, stabilizer in fruit and milk beverages and fruit filling for bakery and confectionary products, among others. Therefore, pectin recovery is of great importance. Scope and Approach The commercially available pectin is almost exclusively derived from citrus peels or apple pomace, by-products…

Molecular phylogeny of the spider family Sparassidae with focus on the genus Eusparassus and notes on the RTA-clade and ‘Laterigradae’

2013

The phylogeny of the spider family Sparassidae is comprehensively investigated using four molecular markers (mitochondrial COI and 16S; nuclear H3 and 28S). Sparassidae was recovered as monophyletic and as most basal group within the RTA-clade. The higher-level clade Dionycha was not but monophyly of RTA-clade was supported. No affiliation of Sparassidae to other members of the 'Laterigradae' (Philodromidae, Selenopidae and Thomisidae) was observed, and the crab-like posture of this group assumed a result of convergent evolution. Only Philodromidae and Selenopidae were found members of a supported clade, but together with Salticidae and Corinnidae, while Thomisidae was nested within the hig…

Investigation of the hygienic safety of aromatic plants cultivated in soil contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

2012

Abstract The present work was undertaken to investigate the survival of Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19114T in soil during the whole crop cycle of rocket (Eruca sativa Mill.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), to monitor its transfer to the leaves, and to evaluate its viability at harvest. To this purpose, the soil was N–P–K fertilized and four trials, obtained with different combinations of soil treatment, listerial inoculums and seed planting, were followed for each aromatic plant. Soil was weekly investigated for total microbial counts and L. monocytogenes evolution. At the starting time, un-inoculated autoclaved soil showed a limited microbial load (103 CFU g dw−1), while un-inoculated non…

Persistence in complex systems

2022

Persistence is an important characteristic of many complex systems in nature, related to how long the system remains at a certain state before changing to a different one. The study of complex systems' persistence involves different definitions and uses different techniques, depending on whether short-term or long-term persistence is considered. In this paper we discuss the most important definitions, concepts, methods, literature and latest results on persistence in complex systems. Firstly, the most used definitions of persistence in short-term and long-term cases are presented. The most relevant methods to characterize persistence are then discussed in both cases. A complete literature r…

Preference for Fractal-Scaling Properties Across Synthetic Noise Images and Artworks

2018

A large number of studies support the notion that synthetic images within a certain intermediate fractal-scaling range possess an intrinsic esthetic value. Interestingly, the fractal-scaling properties that define this intermediate range have also been found to characterize a vast collection of representational, abstract, and graphic art. While some have argued that these statistic properties only serve to maximize the visibility of the artworks’ spatial structure, others argue that they are intrinsically tied to the artworks’ esthetic appeal. In this study, we bring together these two threads of research and make a direct comparison between visual preference for varying fractal-scaling cha…

Tuning the Electrochemistry of Free-Base Porphyrins in Acidic Nonaqueous Media: Influence of Solvent, Supporting Electrolyte, and Ring Substituents

2016

International audience; A detailed study of reduction potentials, electroreduction mechanisms and acid-base chemistry was carried out on two series of free-base porphyrins in nonaqueous media. The first series is represented by four-pyrrole substituted tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) derivatives, two of which are planar and two of which are nonplanar in their non-protonated form. The second comprises porphyrins with 0-4 meso-phenyl groups on the macrocycle. Equilibrium constants for conversion of each neutral porphyrin to its diprotic [H4P] 2+ form were determined and the electrochemistry was then elucidated as a function of: (i) type of nonaqueous solvent, (ii) anion of supporting electrolyte, …

Biotic and abiotic soil properties influence survival of Listeria monocytogenes in soil

2013

International audience; Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for the potentially fatal disease listeriosis and terrestrial ecosystems have been hypothesized to be its natural reservoir. Therefore, identifying the key edaphic factors that influence its survival in soil is critical. We measured the survival of L. monocytogenes in a set of 100 soil samples belonging to the French Soil Quality Monitoring Network. This soil collection is meant to be representative of the pedology and land use of the whole French territory. The population of L. monocytogenes in inoculated microcosms was enumerated by plate count after 7, 14 and 84 days of incubation. Analysis of survival pr…

Membrane Protein Complexes: Structure and Function

2018

This edited book contains a compilation of 14 advanced academic chapters dealing with the structure and function of membrane protein complexes. This rapidly advancing important field of study closely parallels those on soluble protein complexes, and viral protein and nucleoprotein complexes.Diverse topics are included in this book, ranging from membrane–bound enzymes to ion channels, proton pumps and photosystems. Data from X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy and other biophysical and biochemical techniques are presented throughout the book. There is extensive use of colour figures of protein structures. Throughout the book structure and function are closely correlated. The two e…
