Ligand-Based Charge-Transfer Luminescence in Ionic Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Bearing a Pyrene-Functionalized Bipyridine Ligand: A Joint T…

2012

Two new heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(pyr(2)bpy)][PF(6)] ([1a][PF(6)]) and [Ir(dfppy)(2)(pyr(2)bpy)][PF(6)] ([2a][PF(6)]), where Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, Hdfppy = 2-(3,5-difluorophenyl)pyridine, and pyr(2)bpy = 5,5'-bis(pyren-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine, have been synthesized and fully characterized. The single-crystal structures of pyr(2)bpy and the complexes 4{[1a][PF(6)]}·2CH(2)Cl(2)·9H(2)O and [2a][PF(6)]·0.25CH(2)Cl(2)·H(2)O have been determined. The effect of the pyrene substituents on the electronic properties is investigated through a comprehensive photophysical and theoretical study on the two complexes in comparison to reference complexes without substituents on the an…

Photophysical Properties of Charged Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes: A Joint Theoretical and Experimental Study

2011

The photophysical properties of a series of charged biscyclometalated [Ir(ppy)(2)(N boolean AND N)](1+) complexes, where ppyH is 2-phenylpyridine and N boolean AND N is 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine (pbpy), and 6,6'-dipheny1-2,2'-bipyridine (dpbpy) for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively, have been investigated in detail. The photoluminescence performance in solution decreases from 1 to 3 upon attachment of phenyl groups to the ancillary ligand. The absorption spectra recorded over time suggest that complex 3 is less stable compared to complexes 1 and 2 likely due to a nucleophilic-assisted ancillary ligand-exchange reaction. To clarify this behavior, the temperature depen…

INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRODE MATERIAL-REDOX COUPLE FOR REVERSE ELECTRODYALISIS PROCESSES. PART I: IRON REDOX COUPLES.

2012

The performances of electrodialysis (ED) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) processes depend on several factors, including the nature of the electrode material and of the redox couple adopted to make possible the conversion between electric power and chemical potential. In this paper, the possible utilization of iron-based redox couples (FeCl3/FeCl2, hexacyanoferrate(III)/hexacyanoferrate(II) and Fe(III)-EDTA/Fe(II)-EDTA) on graphite and DSA electrodes for RED processes was studied by a detailed experimental investigation. The hexacyanoferrate(III)/hexacyanoferrate(II) system was stable for lonf time (more than 12 days) in the absence of light and oxygen at high redox couple concentrations a…

Hidden Structural Features of Multicompartment Micelles Revealed by Cryogenic Transmission Electron Tomography

2014

The demand for ever more complex nanostructures in materials and soft matter nanoscience also requires sophisticated characterization tools for reliable visualization and interpretation of internal morphological features. Here, we address both aspects and present synthetic concepts for the compartmentalization of nanoparticle peripheries as well as their in situ tomographic characterization. We first form negatively charged spherical multicompartment micelles from ampholytic triblock terpolymers in aqueous media, followed by interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) formation of the anionic corona with bis-hydrophilic cationic/neutral diblock copolymers. At a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio of anionic a…

The nature of inter- and intramolecular interactions in F2OXe…HX (X= F, Cl, Br, I) complexes

2015

Electronic structure of the XeOF2 molecule and its two complexes with HX (X= F, Cl, Br, I) molecules have been studied in the gas phase using quantum chemical topology methods: topological analysis of electron localization function (ELF), electron density, ρ(r), reduced gradient of electron density |RDG(r)| in real space, and symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) in the Hilbert space. The wave function has been approximated by the MP2 and DFT methods, using APF-D, B3LYP, M062X, and B2PLYP functionals, with the dispersion correction as proposed by Grimme (GD3). For the Xe-F and Xe=O bonds in the isolated XeOF2 molecule, the bonding ELF-localization basins have not been observed. Accord…

The p21-activated kinase Mbt is a component of the apical protein complex in central brain neuroblasts and controls cell proliferation

2013

The final size of the central nervous system is determined by precisely controlled generation, proliferation and death of neural stem cells. We show here that the Drosophila PAK protein Mushroom bodies tiny (Mbt) is expressed in central brain progenitor cells (neuroblasts) and becomes enriched to the apical cortex of neuroblasts in a cell cycle- and Cdc42-dependent manner. Using mushroom body neuroblasts as a model system, we demonstrate that in the absence of Mbt function, neuroblasts and their progeny are correctly specified and are able to generate different neuron subclasses as in the wild type, but are impaired in their proliferation activity throughout development. In general, loss of…

Metabolic Adaptation and Protein Complexes in Prokaryotes.

2012

Protein complexes are classified and have been charted in several large-scale screening studies in prokaryotes. These complexes are organized in a factory-like fashion to optimize protein production and metabolism. Central components are conserved between different prokaryotes; major complexes involve carbohydrate, amino acid, fatty acid and nucleotide metabolism. Metabolic adaptation changes protein complexes according to environmental conditions. Protein modification depends on specific modifying enzymes. Proteins such as trigger enzymes display condition-dependent adaptation to different functions by participating in several complexes. Several bacterial pathogens adapt rapidly to intrace…

γ2-Adaptin, a Ubiquitin-interacting Adaptor, Is a Substrate to Coupled Ubiquitination by the Ubiquitin Ligase Nedd4 and Functions in the Endosomal Pa…

2008

gamma2-Adaptin is a putative member of the clathrin adaptor protein family with unknown physiological function. We previously reported that gamma2-adaptin acts as a ubiquitin receptor by virtue of its ubiquitin-interacting motif. Here we demonstrate that this motif mediates a specific physical interaction with the ubiquitin ligase Nedd4 and promotes ubiquitination of gamma2-adaptin. By mapping regions of Nedd4 involved in binding to gamma2-adaptin, we identified its C2 domain to be essential, whereas the WW and HECT domains are dispensable. Consistent with this, we uncovered that the C2 domain of Nedd4 is ubiquitinated itself and as such is recruited by the ubiquitin-interacting motif of ga…

γ2-Adaptin is functioning in the late endosomal sorting pathway and interacts with ESCRT-I and -III subunits.

2010

Abstractγ2-Adaptin is a clathrin adaptor-related protein with unclear physiological function. Previous studies indicated that γ2-adaptin might act within the multivesicular body (MVB) protein-sorting pathway that is central to receptor down-regulation, lysosome biogenesis, and budding of enveloped viruses. Here, we have analyzed the effects of excess and deficit γ2-adaptin on exogenous and endogenous MVB cargoes and on the MVB machinery itself. Foreign cargoes, like retroviral Gags, are entrapped by overexpressed γ2-adaptin in detergent-insoluble polymers and blocked in budding. When viral budding involves MVB/endosomal structures, excess γ2-adaptin acts by accelerating lysosomal Gag destru…
