Vectofocimetry: Dioptric power measurement in manual focimeters using power vectors

2021

Abstract Dioptric power measurement is classically achieved using manual focimeters. In this contribution, we present vectofocimetry as a novel methodology to be easily implemented in manual focimeters for improving their capabilities regarding dioptric power measurement. The new procedure is conceptually based on power vector formalism of dioptric power which represents the dioptric power as three values in the form of [M, J0, J45], it uses an iterative process of blur reduction, and it only requires a few modifications in the device that are easy-to-adapt and cost-effective. As a result, dioptric power measurements are easily and quickly obtained with comparable results to the reported on…

Solving NP-Complete Problems with Networks of Evolutionary Processors

2001

We propose a computational device based on evolutionary rules and communication within a network, similar to that introduced in [4], called network of evolutionary processors. An NP-complete problem is solved by networks of evolutionary processors of linear size in linear time. Some furher directions of research are finally discussed.

Using methods and IT tools innovatively for the management of International IS development projects

2008

Increasingly, information systems (IS) development is done internationally. International IS development is very complex. Some of the factors that lead to this high complexity include geographically dispersed teams, time-zone differences, cultural differences, language problem, and communication challenges. All these affect coordination and collaboration significantly. Therefore, the project management activities have to be executed via different methods and information technology (IT) tools. There is a significant lack of studies dealing with the management of international IS development using methods and IT tools innovatively. Therefore, this study has been undertaken to fill in this res…

Management Challenges in the Context of a Complex View - SMEs Perspective

2015

Abstract The complexity significantly affects the functioning and development of enterprises and is important in understanding the activities of an organization. The perspective of complexity makes the decisions bringing with them a growing economic risk. One group particularly sensitive to the complexity in internal and external environment are small and medium-sized enterprises. Despite this increasing importance, most SMEs have not introduced or implemented yet a complexity management system/approach or they do not realize of the multitude of management challenges emerging with the phenomenon of complexity. The role of SMEs in each economy encourages to explore this area in order to deve…

Introduction to the JOTSC Special Issue on Leveraging Organizational Change and Knowledge Management to Address Environmental Complexity

2016

Claims that organizations are living through a period of unprecedented complexity are not new. Accordingly, scholars and practitioners are recognizing the challenges that originate from operating in increasingly complex and interconnected environments. Despite the relevant theoretical advances occurred in organizational and management studies as a consequence of such recognition, a full appreciation of how organizations deal with complex situations is still missing (Amagoh, 2008; Axeldrod & Cohen, 2000). Accordingly, this special issue aims to contribute to elucidate how organizations respond to environmental complexity through the activation of specific processes of organizational change a…

Teams and project performance: an ability, motivation, and opportunity approach

2020

This article analyzes the relationships between project performance and the team’s ability, motivation, and opportunity (AMO). We contribute to the project management literature by exploring which combinations of AMO factors are best for project performance at different levels of complexity. We test our hypotheses on a sample of 285 projects. Our study shows that in simple projects, ability is the key factor both as a main effect and as a constraining factor that acts as a bottleneck for project performance. In the case of complex projects, the multiplicative model is superior given the significant interaction effects of motivation.

Comparison of genomic sequences clustering using Normalized Compression Distance and Evolutionary Distance

2008

Genomic sequences are usually compared using evolutionary distance, a procedure that implies the alignment of the sequences. Alignment of long sequences is a long procedure and the obtained dissimilarity results is not a metric. Recently the normalized compression distance was introduced as a method to calculate the distance between two generic digital objects, and it seems a suitable way to compare genomic strings. In this paper the clustering and the mapping, obtained using a SOM, with the traditional evolutionary distance and the compression distance are compared in order to understand if the two distances sets are similar. The first results indicate that the two distances catch differen…

Robust control in uncertain multi-inventory systems and consensus problems

2008

Abstract We consider a continuous time linear multi–inventory system with unknown demands bounded within ellipsoids and controls bounded within polytopes. We address the problem of ∈-stabilizing the inventory since this implies some reduction of the inventory costs. The main results are certain conditions under which ∈-stabilizability is possible through a saturated linear state feedback control. The idea of this approach is similar to the consensus problem solution for a network of continuous time dynamic agents, where each agent evolves according to a first order dynamics has bounded control and it is subject to unknown but bounded disturbances. In this context, we derive conditions under…

Introduction: The Late Chalcolithic of Northern Mesopotamia in Context. Building on a Long and Eventful Debate

2022

Many of the debates that have until recently driven research into Mesopotamia’s proto-urban phase (5th– 4th millennia BCE) have now been reassessed thanks to new fieldwork in Iraqi Kurdistan and new data into the relationships between the north and south of the Alluvium from hitherto poorly-documented regions. These debates were re-examined in the light of this new material during a workshop held at the ICAANE in 2018 in Munich, leading to unprecedented perspectives on the patterns of early urbanization, social mobility, and the organization of Late Chalcolithic communities. Drawing on research first presented at ICAANE, and building on the most recent data from surveys and excavations, thi…
