Development and Validation of the OSA-CPAP Perceived Competence Evaluation Interview

2021

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is one of the most common therapies for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). We present a brief, patient-reported outcome measure used to assess patients' levels of adherence with CPAP treatment.A questionnaire was developed based on academic literature. We qualitatively tested a pool of 18 items. It was tested in a sample of 174 patients from the Hospital La Princesa. Next, 1021 patients from Catalonia were evaluated.5 items were removed. Nominal groups referred to three areas: general knowledge about OSA and its risks; CPAP treatment information and expectations; CPAP use, monitoring, and confidence with its use. The 13 retained items maintained the sa…

Mechanostructural adaptations preceding postpneumonectomy lung growth

2012

In many species, pneumonectomy results in compensatory growth in the remaining lung. Although the late mechanical consequences of murine pneumonectomy are known, little is known about the anatomic adaptations and respiratory mechanics during compensatory lung growth. To investigate the structural and mechanical changes during compensatory growth, mice were studied for 21 days after left pneumonectomy using microCT and respiratory system impedance (FlexiVent). Anatomic changes after left pneumonectomy included minimal mediastinal shift or chestwall remodeling, but significant displacement of the heart and cardiac lobe. Mean displacement of the cardiac lobe centroid was 5.2 ± 0.8 mm. Lung imp…

Dynamic determination of oxygenation and lung compliance in murine pneumonectomy.

2011

Thoracic surgical procedures in mice have been applied to a wide range of investigations, but little is known about the murine physiologic response to pulmonary surgery. Using continuous arterial oximetry monitoring and the FlexiVent murine ventilator, the authors investigated the effect of anesthesia and pneumonectomy on mouse oxygen saturation and lung mechanics. Sedation resulted in a dose-dependent decline of oxygen saturation that ranged from 55% to 82%. Oxygen saturation was restored by mechanical ventilation with increased rate and tidal volumes. In the mouse strain studied, optimal ventilatory rates were a rate of 200/minute and a tidal volume of 10 mL/kg. Sustained inflation pressu…

Influence of Organizational Culture on Employees Information Security Policy Compliance in Ethiopian Companies

2021

Information security is one of the organizations' top agendas worldwide. Similarly, there is a growing trend in the kinds and rate of security breaches. Information security experts and scholars concentrate on outsiders' threats; conversely, insiders are responsible for most security breaches in organizations. Further, the majority of information security research findings are limited to solutions that are technically focused. However, it is now recognized that the technological approach alone does not carry the security level needed. So this led researchers to embark on socio-technical approaches. Thus, this study explores organizational culture's effect on employees' intention to comply w…

Ethical challenges in care for older patients who resist help

2014

Background: Situations where patients resist necessary help can be professionally and ethically challenging for health professionals, and the risk of paternalism, abuse and coercion are present. Research question: The purpose of this study was to examine ethical challenges in situations where the patient resists healthcare. Research design: The method used was clinical application research. Academic staff and clinical co-researchers collaborated in a hermeneutical process to shed light on situations and create a basis for new action. Participants and research context: Four research groups were established. Each group consisted of six to eight clinical co-researchers, all employees with diff…

Integrative Biomimetics of Autonomous Hexapedal Locomotion

2019

Despite substantial advances in many different fields of neurorobotics in general, and biomimetic robots in particular, a key challenge is the integration of concepts: to collate and combine research on disparate and conceptually disjunct research areas in the neurosciences and engineering sciences. We claim that the development of suitable robotic integration platforms is of particular relevance to make such integration of concepts work in practice. Here, we provide an example for a hexapod robotic integration platform for autonomous locomotion. In a sequence of six focus sections dealing with aspects of intelligent, embodied motor control in insects and multipedal robots-ranging from comp…

Robust Control of Nonlinear Systems: An Unknown Input Observer Based Approach

2023

Are compliance constants ill-defined descriptors for weak interactions?

2013

Just as the potential energy can be written as a quadratic form in internal coordinates, so it can also be expanded in terms of generalized forces. The resulting coefficients are termed compliance constants. In this article, the suitability of compliance constants as non-covalent bond strength descriptors is studied (a) for a series of weakly bound hydrogen halide–rare gas complexes applying a configuration interaction theory, (b) for a double stranded DNA 4-mer using approximate density functional methods and finally (c) for a double stranded DNA 20-mer using empirical force fields. Our results challenge earlier studies, which concluded the inappropriateness of compliance constants as soft…

Fractional calculus application to visco-elastic solid

2009

It is widely known that fractional derivative is the best mathematical tool to describe visco-elastic constitutive law. In this paper it is shown that as soon as we assume the creep compliance function as power law type, as in the linearized version of the Nutting equation, then the fractional constitutive law appears in a natural way. Moreover, using Nutting equation for the creep function, the relaxation modulus is also of power law type whose coefficients (intensity and exponent) are strictly related to those of the creep compliance. It follows that by a simple creep test (or relaxation test) by means of a best fitting procedure we may easily evaluate the parameters of Nutting equation a…

Evaluation of residual stress during fatigue test in a FSW joint

2007

At present, friction stir welding (FSW) represents one of the most interesting techniques in the field of welding. The process is has been implemented in industrial practice for joining aluminium alloys, while the welding of the titanium alloy and the steels is still primarily in a developmental stage. The thermo-mechanical action of the tool causes a residual stress field in the FSW joint. Although, the peak temperatures of the process are relatively low; residual stresses similar to the traditional welding technique may develop in the FSW joint. Moreover, the restraints of clamps, which are used for fixing the plates during the process, impede the relief of the heated zones that causes lo…
