Time Trends in the Joint Distributions of Income and Age

2001

We propose a method of analyzing time changes of joint income-age densities. Change is decomposed into time invariant components which act on the densities as deformations with time varying strength. The functional form of these components is estimated non parametrically from cross sectional data. The method is applied to analyze British household data on income and age for the years 1968–95. It is learned that for the young and middle aged there is a trend towards increasing inequality, while during the early eighties there seems to occur a reversal in the evolution of the income distribution for the old.

Status of ITER TBM port plug conceptual design and analyses

2014

The test blanket module port plug (TBM PP) consists of a TBM frame and two TBM-sets. However, at any time of the ITER operation, a TBM set can be replaced by a dummy TBM. The frame provides a standardized interface with the vacuum vessel (VV)/port structure and provides thermal isolation from the shield blanket. As one of the plasma-facing components, it shall withstand heat loads while at the same time provide adequate neutron shielding for the VV and magnet coils. The frame design shall provide a stable engineering solution to hold TBM-sets and also provide a mean for rapid remote handling replacement and refurbishment. This paper presents main design features of the conceptual design of …

Efficient thermo-optically controlled Mach-Zhender interferometers using dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides

2012

Compact fiber-coupled dielectric-loaded plasmonic Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating at telecom wavelengths and controlled via the thermo-optic effect are reported. Two fabricated structures with Cytop substrate and a ridge made of PMMA or a cycloaliphatic acrylate polymer (CAP) were considered showing low switching power of 2.35 mW and switching time in the range of microseconds for a CAP ridge and milliseconds switching time for a PMMA ridge. Full output modulation is demonstrated for the structure with a CAP ridge and 40% modulation with a PMMA ridge. Blood Component Therapy and Coagulopathy in Trauma: A Systematic Review of the Literature from the Trauma Update Group

2016

Background Traumatic coagulopathy is thought to increase mortality and its treatment to reduce preventable deaths. However, there is still uncertainty in this field, and available literature results may have been overestimated. Methods We searched the MEDLINE database using the PubMed platform. We formulated four queries investigating the prognostic weight of traumatic coagulopathy defined according to conventional laboratory testing, and the effectiveness in reducing mortality of three different treatments aimed at contrasting coagulopathy (high fresh frozen plasma/packed red blood cells ratios, fibrinogen, and tranexamic acid administration). Randomized controlled trials were selected alo…

Sea urchin neural alpha 2 tubulin gene: isolation and promoter analysis

2004

Abstract Expression of Tα2 gene, during sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus development, is spatially and temporally regulated. In order to characterize this gene, we isolated the relevant genomic sequences and scanned the isolated 5 ′ -flanking region in searching for cis -regulatory elements required for proper expression. Gel mobility shift and footprinting assays, as well as reporter gene (CAT and β-gal) expression assays, were used to address cis -regulatory elements involved in regulation. Here we report that an upstream 5 ′ -flanking fragment of PlTα2 gene drives temporal expression of reporter genes congruent with that of endogenous Tα2 gene. The fragment contains cis -elements able to…

Texture analysis with statistical methods for wheat ear extraction

2007

In agronomic domain, the simplification of crop counting, necessary for yield prediction and agronomic studies, is an important project for technical institutes such as Arvalis. Although the main objective of our global project is to conceive a mobile robot for natural image acquisition directly in a field, Arvalis has proposed us first to detect by image processing the number of wheat ears in images before to count them, which will allow to obtain the first component of the yield. In this paper we compare different texture image segmentation techniques based on feature extraction by first and higher order statistical methods which have been applied on our images. The extracted features are…

Crisis and Opportunities Variables always Addressed Simultaneously in Effective Management

2013

Abstract Understanding the causes, duration and consequences of the crisis and the means to exit it are far from being regarded as sufficiently understood and operationalized. From the general components of the crisis, there was a necessity to be defined and managed separately the subjective component (disorientation, confusion) and the objective component, which are unequivocally different. They have to be operationalized into strategies, programs and tactical procedures to traverse and overcome the crisis with minimal loss. The paper also deals with the opportunities that crisis can create and with the measures necessary to identify and exploit these.

Complement Component 3 expressed by the endometrial ectopic tissue is involved in the endometriotic lesion formation through mast cell activation

2020

AbstractThe pathophysiology of endometriosis (EM) is an excellent example of immune dysfunction, reminiscent of tumor microenvironment as well. Here, we report that an interplay between C3 and mast cells (MCs) is involved in the pathogenesis of ectopic EM. C3 is at the epicenter of the regulatory feed forward loop, amplifying the inflammatory microenvironment, in which the MCs are protagonists. Thus, C3 can be considered a marker of EM and its local synthesis can promote the engraftment of the endometriotic cysts. We generated a murine model of EM via injection of minced uterine tissue from a donor mouse, into the peritoneum of the recipient mice. The wild type mice showed greater amount of…

Suspended particulate matter fluxes along with their associated metals, organic matter and carbonates in a coastal Mediterranean area affected by min…

2016

International audience; A study of suspended particulate matter (SPM) fluxes along with their associated metals, organic matter and carbonates, was conducted off the Mejerda River outlet in May 2011 and in March and July 2012 at depths of 10, 20 and 40 m using sediment traps. SPM fluxes are more significant near the Mejerda outlet, especially in winter, but dissipate further offshore. Normalization reveals that the Mejerda is a major source of Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Co, all of which are the result of human activities. In contrast, Fe, Mn and N are of authigenic origin. The enrichment factor shows that Pb, Zn and especially Cd are the most highly polluting metals off the Mejerda outlet. Thi…

Antiproliferative activity against leukemia cells of sesquiterpene lactones from the Turkish endemic plant Centaurea drabifolia subsp. detonsa

2017

The apolar organic extract obtained from aerial parts of Centaurea drabifolia Sibth. & Sm. subsp. detonsa (Bornm.) Wagenitz, growing wild in Turkey, was investigated for the first time for its secondary metabolite composition. Seven sesquiterpene lactones belonging to the guaiane class (1-7), including the new compound 4, along with a fatty acid lactone derivative (8), were isolated. The structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis, including 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques, with the stereostructure of the new guaiane 4 determined with the help of MTPA derivatization. Cytotoxic activities of compounds 1-7 were evaluated against two cancer cell lines, namely acute…
