Assessing the sustainability of small wastewater treatment systems: A composite indicator approach

2014

The assessment of the sustainability of wastewater treatment (WWT) systems has gained interest in recent years. However, most previous studies have focused on environmental and/or economic dimensions ignoring social aspects. Moreover, they tend to be based on sets of indicators rather than providing a holistic assessment. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes an innovative methodology to assess the sustainability of WWT systems based on the development of a composite indicator embracing economic, environmental and social issues. Subsequently, the global sustainability of seven WWT technologies for secondary treatment in small communities is compared. The joint application of the …

A BoD Composite Indicator to Measure the Italian “Sole 24 Ore” Quality of Life

2023

The measure of Quality of Life (QoL) is still a topic widely discussed in literature. In Italy, the newspaper “Il Sole 24 Ore” publishes a famous ranking that highlights strong disparities among provinces. In this paper, “Il Sole 24 Ore” and BoD-DEA methods are compared in order to show how different types of normaliza- tion and aggregation significantly influence the results making these rankings very fragile and questionable.

Key-indicators for maternity hospitals and newborn readmission in Sicily

2017

This paper proposes a composite indicator for the classification of maternity units, which takes into account for the different dimensions of service delivery, as potential predictors of health outcomes. As a measure of outcome, infant readmissions is considered, being a proxy of morbidity. The results highlight that after controlling for risk factors of the newborn, and for the presence of neonatal intensive unit, infants born in lower level hospitals show readmission rates higher than infants born in higher level hospitals.

A composite indicator of social inclusion for European countries

2012

Social inclusion is one of seven key challenges of the European Union Sustainable Development Strategy. We use a set of sub-indicators to measure social inclusion for 26 member countries of the European Union. In particular, we aggregate four basic indicators in a multiplicative composite indicator via a DEA-BoD approach with weights determined endogenously by imposing proportion constraints. We obtain a score of social inclusion that allows us to grade 26 European countries in 2008, 2009 and 2010 during the European phase of the financial and economic crisis.

Measuring Tourist Satisfaction Through a Dual Approach: The 4Q Methodology

2018

Tourist satisfaction is one of the key factors in determining the success of a tourist destination, since it affects behavioural intentions, such as the willingness to revisit and recommend the destination. Therefore, much research has addressed the measuring of tourist satisfaction, either eliciting positive or negative evaluations of a holiday or destination. The spread between expected positive and negative characteristics can trigger a tourist experience. And the gap between expectations and perceptions will produce a feeling of satisfaction or dissatisfaction (Expectancy-Disconfirmation Paradigm, EDP). Under these conditions, this paper adopts a dual approach, considering tourist satis…

Flexible latent trait aggregation to analyze employability after the Ph.D. in Italy

2015

The analysis of satisfaction, employability and economic perspectives after the Ph.D. in Italy has not received adequate attention in the past, especially in terms of comparison among universities. To analyze these aspects, in this paper we consider data from the survey ‘Statistica in TEma di Laureati e LAvoro’ on doctors who achieved the title on 2007, 2008 and 2009 [CILEA, Laureati STELLA, indagine occupazionale post-dottorato, dottori di ricerca 2007–2008, Tech. Composite Indicator of Social Inclusion for European Countries

2013

Social inclusion is one of the key challenges of the European Union (EU) Sustainable Development Strategy. We use four indicators from EU policies to measure social inclusion for the 27 member countries of Europe. In particular, we aggregate the four indicators in a multiplicative composite indicator via a DEA-BoD approach with weights determined endogenously with proportion constraints. We obtain a score of social inclu- sion that allows us to grade the 27 EU countries from 2006 to 2010. In this way, we highlight the specific role played by the four indicators in determining improvements and deteriorations of social inclusion during the European phase of the financial and economic crisis.

Composite Indicator of Social Inclusion for the EU Countries

2016

Social inclusion is one of the key challenges of the European Union Sustainable Development Strategy (EU SDS). We use the main indicators identified by Eurostat within the operational objectives of the specific European policies to measure social inclusion for the 27 member countries of the European Union. In particular, we aggregate four basic indicators in a multiplicative composite indicator via a DEA-BoD approach with weights determined endogenously with proportion constraints. We obtain a score of social inclusion that allows us to grade the 27 EU countries from 2006 to 2010. Indicators of Tourist Market Appeal and Sustainability. An Analysis of Italian Opera Houses

2007

This paper aims at pointing out how Italian Opera Houses are facing the challenge involved with tourism, after some recent institutional changes which transformed them in private foundations. Here we put in evidence the potential tourist appeal and the sustainability of a tourist approach for all of the Italian Opera Houses. This issue is addressed constructing two indicators of market appeal and sustainability. Resorting to a deep documentary research and an ad hoc questionnaire survey, we detected and measured the relevant dimensions of market appeal (physical setting, popularity outside the local area, overall tourist appeal of the hosting city, geographical allocation, proximity to othe…

Ranking world tourist destinations with a composite indicator of competitiveness: To weigh or not to weigh?

2019

Abstract This paper contributes a weighted composite indicator of competitiveness for 136 world tourist destinations. To that end, Data Envelopment Analysis and Multi-Criteria-Decision-Making techniques are used with raw indicators from the 2017 edition of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum (WEF). An outstanding feature of our approach is that weights are endogenously generated. Furthermore, the role played by several variables in tourism competitiveness is assessed using truncated regression and bootstrapping. The ranking of world tourist destinations produced by our weighted composite indicator of competitiveness is, however, fairly similar to that der…
