Hydrothermal Ageing Effect on Reinforcement Efficiency of Nanofibrillated Cellulose/Biobased Poly(butylene succinate) Composites
2022
Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is a sustainable functional nanomaterial known for its high strength, stiffness, and biocompatibility. It has become a key building block for the next-generation of lightweight, advanced materials for applications such as consumer products, biomedical, energy storage, coatings, construction, and automotive. Tunable and predictable durability under environmental impact is required for high performance applications. Bio-based poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) composites containing up to 50% NFC content were designed and aged in distilled water or at high relative humidity (RH98%). PBS/NFC composites are characterized by up to 10-fold increased water absorption ca…
Development of Removable Visual Impact Indicator or Polymer Composite Materials
2021
The prototype of removable visual impact indicator for thermoset polymer composite materials is developed, and its characteristics are experimentally determined. The indicator is a fabric tape glued by epoxy to the surface of the polymer composite. The tape is impregnated with a composition that provides a visual response at the place of an impact on the composite surface. Ball-drop tests demonstrated the increase of the magnitude of the visual response with the impact energy at different substrate hardnesses. The shelf-life and mode of the tape storage until commissioning are determined. Peel tests showed the ability to remove a used indicator without damaging the surface of the composite.
Pull-off adhesion of hybrid glass-steel adhesive joints in salt fog environment
2016
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the durability behaviour of glass/steel adhesive joints exposed to salt fog environmental conditions for ten weeks, according to ASTM B117 standard. To this scope, pull-off mechanical tests were carried out in order to evaluate the performances evolution and damage phenomena of the adhesive joints during the ageing exposition. Two different types of adhesives were compared (i.e. epoxy and polyurethane ones). Moreover, the effects of the glass surface condition and the presence of a basalt mat layer within the adhesive thickness were evaluated. The mechanical performances were related with the occurred failure mechanisms. Epoxy-based joints showed higher…
Analysis of Immunomodulatory Properties of Spheroids from Adipose-derived Stem Cells
2020
Purpose: Adipose Stem Cells (ASCs) represent promising cell therapies for regenerative medicine and immunomodulation. The recently isolated spheroids from adipose-derived stem cells (S-ASCs) have shown being superior stemness and enhanced regenerative capability than the classical ASCs. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate the effects of adipose tissue donor-site, harvesting technique and patients’ characteristics on the yield of S-ASCs and (2) to investigate the immunomodulatory properties of S-ASCs comparing them with the adherent ASCs. Material and Methods: The study was divided into two phases. Phase I (prospective clinical study) between July 2016 and August 2019 was conducte…
Effects of defects on the tensile strength of short-fibre composite materials
2014
Abstract. Heterogeneous materials tend to fail at the weakest cross-section, where the presence of microstructural heterogeneities or defects controls the tensile strength. Short-fibre composites are an example of heterogeneous materials, where unwanted fibre agglomerates are likely to initiate tensile failure. In this study, the dimensions and orientation of fibre agglomerates have been analysed from three-dimensional images obtained by X-ray microtomography. The geometry of the specific agglomerate responsible for failure initiation has been identified and correlated with the strength. At the plane of fracture, a defect in the form of a large fibre agglomerate was almost inevitably found.…
Fast blue B functionalized silica-polymer composite to evaluate 3,5-dihy-droxyhydrocinnamic acid as biomarker of gluten intake
2021
Celiac disease is an immune-mediated systemic disorder elicited by gluten and related prolamines in genetically susceptible individuals. The current treatment is a strict and lifelong gluten-free diet. However, compliance with the gluten-free diet is not always adequate and many food products contain low concentrations of gluten. The determination of dietary transgressions is a challenge for patients, physicians and dietitians. Alkylresorcinols (AR) have been proposed as sensitive and specific biomarkers of gluten consumption. In this work silica-polymer composites doped with fast blue B reagent (FB) have been used to estimate alkylresorcinols in biological samples. The proposed colorimetri…
Material flow analysis in dissimilar friction stir welding of AA2024 and Ti6Al4V butt joints
2016
The complex material flow occurring during the weld of dissimilar AA2024 to Ti6Al4V butt and lap joints was highlighted through a dedicated numerical model able to take into account the effects of the different materials as well as the phase transformation of the used titanium alloy.
Elastic Geobarometry for Anisotropic Inclusions in Anisotropic Host Minerals: Quartz-in-Zircon
2021
Current models for elastic geobarometry have been developed with the assumption that the host and/or inclusion minerals are elastically isotropic. This assumption has limited applications of elastic thermobarometry to mineral inclusions contained in cubic quasi-isotropic host minerals (e.g., garnet). Here, we report a new elastic model that takes into account the anisotropic elastic properties and relative crystallographic orientation (RCO) of a host-inclusion system where both minerals are noncubic. This anisotropic elastic model can be used for host-inclusion elastic thermobarometric calculations provided that the RCO and elastic properties of both the host and inclusion are known. We the…
PVC silver zeolite composites with antimicrobial properties
2011
Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites containing increasing amounts (2-20%, w/w) of silver zeolite (SZ) were prepared by melt mixing and characterized by thermal, mechanical and rheological analyses. The addition of large amount of SZ did not influence the processability and the formability of the composites, if compared to neat plasticized PVC. The antibacterial activity of PVC SZ composites was tested on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis and resulted promising both in culture broth and on agar plate and also in sterile urine seeded with these strains, for simulation purposes. In sterile urine, composites induced a significant reduction (4-6 log units) of viability of both st…
