Investigation on the indentation behavior of sandwich beams using crushable and hyperelastic foam cores

In this work the indentation behaviour of sandwich beams is studied adopting the classical approach representing the core material as a Winkler-type foundation. It is shown how most of the proposed theories can be derived from a general fourth order linear differential equation expressing the equilibrium of the indented beam skin. Different assumptions on the supporting boundary constraints and materials constitutive behaviour, lead to simplifications of the general equation and to the prediction of different indentation features. Mechanical properties of injection-molded binary blends of polyethylene with small additions of a liquid-crystalline polymer

The results of the investigation of the mechanical properties of polyethylene (PE) blends with small (<3 wt %) additions of thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) are reported. PE/LCP compositions with various LCP weight contents were obtained by thermoplastic mixing in a two-stage process. Short-term and long-term mechanical behavior of various PE/LCP compositions were analyzed. Data on the influence of LCP addition on the tensile elastic modulus [or Young's modulus (E)], stress at yield (σY), stress at break (σB), strain at yield, strain at break, and deformation at long-term (1000-h) tensile creep were obtained. Surface and bulk ordering in thin films of a symmetrical diblock copolymer

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers have the ability to adapt their surface's molecular composition to the hydrophilicity of their environment. In the case of about equal volume fractions of the two polymer blocks, the bulk of these polymers is known to develop a laminar ordering. We report here our investigation of the relationship between bulk ordering and surface morphology/chemical composition in thin films of such an amphiphilic diblock copolymer. During processing polyamides can undergo thermo-mechanical degradation due to the mechanical stress and to the high temperature applied to the melt. A giant hybrid organic-inorganic octahedron from a narrow rim carboxylate calixarene.

Here we discovered an unprecedented giant octahedral coordination compound bearing 16 Zn2+, 12 Na+, 8 O2-, 4 OH-, 13 H2O and 6 L4- ligands [L4- = fully deprotonated tetra(carboxymethoxy)calix[4]arene]. Its structure was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. This compound, Zn8Na6L6⊃Zn8Na6O8(OH)4(H2O)13 (external⊃internal), has eight tetrahedral zinc ions forming the coordination vertices of an outermost cube where carboxylate groups from the sodium calixarenes are anchored. The Effect of Montmorillonite Type Nanoparticles on Stiffness and Flammability of Rapeseed Oil Based Polyisocyanurate Foams

Polyisocyanurate foams incorporating polyols derived from rapeseed oil are developed, with the polyol system comprising up to 80% of rapeseed oil esters. To enhance the mechanical characteristics and fire resistance of the foams, they are filled with three different types of organically modified clay (organoclay) in the range of loading from 1 to 5% by weight. Marked increase in tensile stiffness of nanocomposite foams is observed.
Mechanical Properties of Composite SPEEK Polymer Membranes Modified with Ionic Liquids

In this work, the mechanical properties of sulphonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) membranes impregnated with 3 different ionic liquids (1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl- imidazolium dimethylphosphate ([BMMIM][Me2PO4])), 1,2,3-trimethylimidazolium dimethylphosphate ([MMMIM][Me2PO4])), 1,3-dimethylimidazolium dimethylphosphate ([MMIM][Me2PO4])) have been investigated. Prepared SPEEK/ionic liquid composite membranes are characterized by mechanical testing both in room and elevated temperatures. It was found that the stiffness and tensile strength of composites decreased by increasing the content of ionic liquid and the length of alkyl radical in ionic liquid as well as by increasing the temperature.
