Influence of mechanoactivation on the adhesion and mechanical properties of metal/oxide interfaces

Properties of interfaces in solid state metal/oxide joints (Al/SiO2, Al/MgO, Al/glass, Mg/MgO, In/glass, Mg/SiO2 etc.) are reported. Interfaces were formed at plastic deformation of metal on the oxide surface at room temperature. Structure, composition, and micromechanical properties of the interfaces are studied by AFM, X-ray diffraction, SIMS, electron, optical microscopy, and precision microindentation. A noticeable adhesion is observed in the regions of maximum shear strain in case of metals with low oxide formation energy. In situ synchrotron characterization of mechanically activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis applied in Mo–Si system

Abstract An original experiment was designed to monitor structural and thermal evolutions during the MASHS (Mechanically Activated Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) process in the Mo–Si system. Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction (TRXRD) coupled with an infrared imaging technique was performed to study, in situ, the formation of the α-MoSi2 phase in the combustion front. Despite a temporal resolution of 50 ms between two consecutive diffractograms, no intermediate phase was observed during the passage of the combustion front. The 0.7Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-0.3SrTiO3 ceramics were prepared by a solid-state mixed-oxide technique at 1180°C. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies revealed that the obtained samples possess perovskite structure. The behaviour of the electric permittivity (ɛ) and polarization of these ceramics as a function of uniaxial pressure (0 – 1000 bar) were investigated. Applying pressure shifts and decrease of maximum value of ɛ, a diffuseness of the permittivity characteristics, decrease of the thermal hysteresis and change of the polarization. Structural and Dielectric Properties of Na0.99Li0.01NbO3Ceramics

Na0.99Li 0,01 NbO3 ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, microstructure and dielectric permittivity measurements. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that samples have a single phase of perovskite structure with orthorhombic symmetry. Microstructure investigations revealed crystalline structures in grains. It was found that dielectric properties of Na99Li0.01NbO3 ceramic are sensitive to the applied axial pressure. This includes the shift of phase transformation, diffuseness of the ϵ (T) profile and reduction of the thermal hysteresis. Multifractal zone plates

We present multifractal zone plates (MFZPs) as what is to our knowledge a new family of diffractive lenses whose structure is based on the combination of fractal zone plates (FZPs) of different orders. The typical result is a composite of two FZPs with the central one having a first-order focal length f surrounded by outer zones with a third-order focal length f. The focusing properties of different members of this family are examined and compared with conventional composite Fresnel zone plates. It is shown that MFZPs improve the axial resolution and also give better performance under polychromatic illumination.

ABSTRACT Magnetic fine particles of cobalt ferrite have been prepared by method of pyrolytic synthesis. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of single-phase cobalt ferrite nanoparticles in the range 6–50 nm. The size of the particles varies depending on matrix dispersity and mass content in the organic precursors. A large coercivity observed to be small for smaller single-domain particles due to superparamagnetic behavior.
The Effects of 3d Admixtures on Properties of Relaxor PLZT8/65/35 Ceramics

A study of the effects of the 3d dopants Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu on relaxor behavior and other properties of the ferroelectric PLZT8/65/35(La8) ceramic compound by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and other techniques is reported. The complex dielectric permittivity ϵ* = ϵ′-iϵ′′ is measured in the 20–400°C range of temperature at frequencies within the range of 102 – 106 Hz. Essential changes caused by the admixtures in the behavior of dielectric permittivity with frequency and temperature are observed along with changes in the XRD SEM patterns are observed. The mechanisms of the phenomena are discussed.
Elucidating structural order and disorder phenomena in mullite-type Al4B2O9 by automated electron diffraction tomography

The crystal structure and disorder phenomena of Al4B2O9, an aluminum borate from the mullite-type family, were studied using automated diffraction tomography (ADT), a recently established method for collection and analysis of electron diffraction data. Al4B2O9, prepared by sol-gel approach, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m. The ab initio structure determination based on three-dimensional electron diffraction data from single ordered crystals reveals that edge-connected AlO6 octahedra expanding along the b axis constitute the backbone. Modified YBCO superconductor-ferroelectric composites: Bulk materials and thick films

Bulk samples and 50–125 μm thick films of (1-x)YBa2Cu3O7−δ-xBaTiO3 (0⩽x⩽0.12 by weight) composites have been synthesized, the films being obtained by Stokes sedimentation on SrTiO3 ceramic plates and firing in oxygen by Melt Textured Growth techniques. The phase composition and texture have been studied by X-ray diffraction and microstructure. Resistance and magnetic susceptibility of prepared samples have been measured.
