Flexural behaviour of glass panels under dead load and uniform lateral pressure

2013

Abstract In the present paper the experimental results relative to flexural tests on out-of-plane loaded large scale panels made of laminated structural glass are presented and discussed. Glass panels are parts of the structural facade of the Fontanarossa International Airport of Catania (Italy). Panels are mounted on a rigid testing frame and loaded with an uniformly distributed lateral pressure. Two different kinds of tests were carried-out, cyclic and monotonic, able to reproduce the serviceability and the ultimate conditions of the glass panels when subjected to the coupled effects of dead load and horizontal forces, the latter reproducing the wind action. Results obtained focused the h…

Material characteristics in the analysis of heated steel beams

1989

Beam fire tests are expensive and complicated. They may be replaced by calculations of the heated beam deflection by means of the method presented in this paper. The following material characteristics in the analysis of the deflection of beams during fire may be taken as fundamental: the steel creep characteristic at elevated temperatures, the modulus of elasticity and the coefficient of thermal expansion. According to the yield hinge theory, the yield stress is the criterion of failure of steel beams in fire. On the other hand, in the analysis of the deflection of the heated steel beams the influence of the yield stress is very small. The influence of the respective material characteristic…

A systematic literature review on less common natural fibres and their biocomposites

2018

Abstract Interest in utilization of renewable resources is increasing because of public's environmental awareness and economic considerations. Lignocellulosic fibres have already attracted growing attention as reinforcement of polymeric matrices instead of synthetic ones (mainly glass) from the academic and industrial fields. In addition to kenaf, hemp, sisal, flax and jute, which are the subject of extensive investigations for composite applications since the 1970s, in the last years several researchers suggested the use of less common natural fibres, due to their low cost and availability. This paper reviews the extraction methods, chemical, morphological, thermal and mechanical propertie…

Steel and composite tied-arch bridges: a conceptual approach to structural design

2021

The behaviour of tied-arch bridges with composite decks (bowstring bridges) is overly sensitive to the different choices made by the designer in the first phases of the conceptual approach, mainly in the design of the arch and the deck. The geometry of the arch shape, the design of the arch–tie joint and the construction sequence can significantly modify the global behaviour in terms of stress state and deformed configuration. After a general discussion on the different parameters affecting the behaviour of bowstring bridges with steel–concrete composite decks, the consequences of choices made in the conceptual design phases are discussed, analysing the effects of each choice on the global…

Flexural response of external R.C. beam-column joints externally strengthened with steel cages

2015

Abstract An experimental and theoretical research referred to the flexural behavior of external R.C. joints strengthened with steel cages constituted by steel angles and battens is presented. The subassemblage (beam, column and joint) was subjected to a constant vertical load acting on the column and to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip of the beam. The control specimen is without strengthening system and it was designed with weak column and strong beam and overstrength in the joint region. Strengthening cases here studied refer to steel caging in the column and both in the beam and in the column. Cyclic response in term of load–displacement curves, crack patterns …

RC column externally strengthened with RC jackets

2013

In this paper the behaviour in compression of RC columns externally strengthened with concrete jacketing is analysed and a cross-section analysis of the jacketed member under axial load and bending moment is developed. The focus was to study the effect of confinement of concrete jacket on concrete core and the behaviour of compressed bars with buckling effects. Some other important aspects such as shrinkage, creep, old to new concrete surfaces and bond split effects were not included in the model because: the use of thick non-shrink grout jacket and a well-roughened surface of old-to-new concrete was supposed; long term effects were included though corrective coefficients for monolithic beh…

High-velocity Impact Location on Aircraft panels Using Macro-fiber Composite piezoelectric Rosettes

2010

In this article, an approach based on an array of macro-fiber composite (MFC) transducers arranged as rosettes is proposed for high-velocity impact location on isotropic and composite aircraft panels. Each rosette, using the directivity behavior of three MFC sensors, provides the direction of an incoming wave generated by the impact source as a principal strain angle. A minimum of two rosettes is sufficient to determine the impact location by intersecting the wave directions. The piezoelectric rosette approach is easier to implement than the well-known time-of-flight-based triangulation of acoustic emissions because it does not require knowledge of the wave speed in the material. Hence, th…

Analytical Models Based on Composite Layer for Computation of Tool-Chip Interface Temperatures in Machining Steels with Multilayer Coated Cutting Too…

2005

In this study the method of elementary balances (MBE) is applied to predict the temperature fields in uncoated and coated carbide cutting tools. Numerical computations are supported by the experimentally/analytically obtained values of the contact length, the total heat flux and the heat partitioning. The changes in the tool temperature maps, resulting from variable thermal properties of tested materials are considered. In particular, the distribution of temperature across the thin film of 0.01 mm and corresponding temperature rise distribution curves along the rake and flank faces are completely displayed. The simulations have been validated against the measured average rake face temperatu…

Minimum bond length and size effects in FRP–substrate bonded joints

2009

Abstract The load transfer mechanism between the fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials and the substrate plays a crucial role in the overall response of retrofitted structural members. The FRP–support material interface can be studied by using pull tests in which a reinforcement plate is bonded to a prism and subjected to a tensile force. The experimental results obtained regard the assembly (FRP strip-support block), then a central problem is how to carry out the interface constitutive laws and the related parameters. The principal objective of the present paper is to contrive a procedure which, for a fixed interface constitutive law, permits to derive the interface mechanical parameter…

Self-piercing riveting for aluminium alloys-composites hybrid joints

2008

In the paper, the growing interest on hybrid joints developed between composite panels and aluminium alloys blanks is focused. The self-piercing riveting operation is considered and its feasibility for the proposed joints verified. The most relevant process parameters were investigated in order to determine a suitable process window and, what is more, the mechanical performances of the developed joints were investigated in order to determine process parameters aimed to maximise them. Finally, the failure mechanics of the obtained joints were considered in order to highlight the mechanisms which occur and determine the lost of the load carrying capability of the joints. The developed experim…
