Modification of vacuum-ultraviolet absorption of SiOH groups in SiO2 glass with temperature, F2 laser irradiation, and H–D isotope exchange

2006

Abstract Variations of vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption of silanol (SiOH) groups in synthetic wet SiO 2 glass with temperature, exposure to F 2 laser light, and with H–D isotope exchange were examined at photon energies below 8 eV. The intensity of the VUV absorption band decreases with cooling or with exposure to F 2 laser light. The spectral changes in both cases are qualitatively similar and are attributed to an alternation of the bonding configuration of SiOH groups from isolated into hydrogen-bonded states. However, the resultant states are distinctly different: the hydrogen-bonded state formed on cooling is restored reversibly to the isolated state on heating, while that induced by…

An insight into the interaction between functionalized thermoplastic elastomer and layered double hydroxides through rheological investigations

2018

Abstract Nanocomposites based on maleated poly(styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene) copolymer (SEBSgMA) and organo-modified layered double hydroxide (OLDH) have been formulated with the aim to investigate the effects of interfacial interactions between the grafted maleic anhydride groups of the copolymer and the OLDH nanolayers on the rheological properties of nanocomposites. The spectroscopic analysis indicates the establishment of specific polymer/nanofiller interactions, whose extent has been highlighted through morphological and rheological investigations. Specifically, oscillatory melt rheology and shear relaxation tests have been considered in order to deeply investigate the interf…

STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY IN FERROELECTRICS: SUPERIMPOSING HAMILTONIAN AND STOCHASTIC DYNAMICS

2008

ABSTRACT Structural instability of ferroelectrics distinguished by appearance of coexisting phases and spatial inhomogeneity is at variance with the predictions of statistics in the canonical ensemble. A more refined description includes ergodicity breaking which become apparent at critical temperature when the system resides in metastable state and its development lead to one of possible minimum energy states. In this study the domain growth and switching is reproduced within the framework of Fokker-Planck approach. The mathematical technique is developed for empiric Landau Hamiltonians and improved for application to first principles effective Hamiltonians with supercells and elementary l…

Digital rock physics, chemistry, and biology: challenges and prospects of pore-scale modelling approach

2021

Abstract Conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon rocks have complicated pore structures with heterogeneities distributed over various length scales (from nanometre to centimetre or even larger scales). Effective characterization of the properties of such rocks based on their digital twins is a challenging task. Digital rock physics (DRP) can be used to quantify the structural and morphological parameters of rocks directly and predict flow transport properties at the pore scale. Digital rock chemistry (DRC) or biology (DRB) applies when the changes in pore structures are due to interaction with solutes or microbial activities. Fluid–rock interactions or microbial activities complicate fl…

Analytical representations for relaxation functions of glasses

2002

Analytical representations in the time and frequency domains are derived for the most frequently used phenomenological fit functions for non-Debye relaxation processes. In the time domain the relaxation functions corresponding to the complex frequency dependent Cole-Cole, Cole-Davidson and Havriliak-Negami susceptibilities are also represented in terms of $H$-functions. In the frequency domain the complex frequency dependent susceptibility function corresponding to the time dependent stretched exponential relaxation function is given in terms of $H$-functions. The new representations are useful for fitting to experiment.

Low-energy excitations from interacting tunneling units in the mean-field approximation

1991

Abstract The low-energy excitation spectrum of dilute concentrations of interacting tunneling quadrupoles randomly distributed in a non-polar medium was studied in the mean-field approximation. In particular the case of six-orientational tunneling quadrupoles (TQs) with a r−3 (elastic) interaction was considered. Because of the random position of the TQs, the internal field in a random variable and for relatively low concentrations has a Lorenzian probability distribution. The low-energy density of states is a constant and the low-energy excitations arise from the large internal fields, i.e. strongly interacting tunneling quadrupoles. The low-energy excitations were compared with those obta…

Some comments on fluctuating-elasticity and local oscillator models for anomalous vibrational excitations in glasses

2011

Abstract An overview is given on the present status of the theoretical description of vibrational spectra of glasses, as seen by inelastic neutron, X-ray and light (Raman) scattering. Using the language of Green's/response functions the merits and shortcomings of a local oscillator and a generalized elasticity-theory point of view are discussed. It is pointed out that in both cases the interaction of phonons with disorder-induced irregularities leads to Rayleigh scattering (mean free path l ∝ ω − 4 ) at low enough frequencies and temperatures. In disordered solids at ambient temperature the Rayleigh scattering is usually masqued by Akhiezer-like anharmonic scattering l ∝ ω − 2 , but it can …

Heavy-tail properties of relaxation time distributions underlying the Havriliak–Negami and the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts relaxation patterns

2007

Abstract A detailed discussion of asymptotic properties of the Havriliak–Negami and the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts relaxation time distributions is presented. The heavy-tail property of the Havriliak–Negami relaxation time distribution, leading to the infinite mean relaxation time, is discussed. In contrast, the existence of the finite mean relaxation time for the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts response is shown. The discussion of the Cole–Davidson and the Cole–Cole cases is also included. Using the Tauberian theorems we show that these properties are determined directly by the asymptotic behavior of the considered empirical functions.

Theory of vibrational anomalies in glasses

2015

Abstract The theory of elasticity with spatially fluctuating elastic constants (heterogeneous-elasticity theory) is reviewed. It is shown that the vibrational anomalies associated with the boson peak can be qualitatively and quantitatively explained in terms of this theory. Two versions of a mean-field theory for solving the stochastic equation of motion are presented: the coherent-potential approximation (CPA) and the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA). It is shown that the latter is included in the former in the Gaussian and weak-disorder limit. We are able to discuss and explain cases in which the change of the vibrational spectrum by varying an external parameter can be accounted…
