Gas chromatography of homologous esters
1985
Abstract The retention behaviour of C 1 C 18 n -alkyl esters of butanoic 2-, 3- and 4-chlorobutanoic acids was examined isothermally at several temperatures on SE-30 and OV-351 capillary columns. Retention increments showing the effects of each position of chlorine substitution are presented. The considerable enhancement of terminal chlorine substitution is discussed together with the corresponding behaviour of the monochloropropanoate esters.
Über die Verbreitung von Flavonoiden bei pleurokarpen Laubmoosen II. Apigenin and Apigenin-7-rhamnoglucosid bei Pleurozium schreberi (Willd.) Mitt.
1980
Summary 12 species of pleurocarpous mosses have been investigated as to their content of flavonoids. Flavonoid tests on 11 species have given negative results. Only one species, Pleurozium schreberi , contains three flavonoids. They were purified by means of paper chromatography. Two of them are by chromatography, acid hydrolysis and absorption spectrum identical with apigenin and apigenin-7-rhamnoglucoside. The third flavonoid is as yet unidentified. Qualitative hydrolysis yields apigenin. The chemotaxonomic importance of the results is briefly discussed.
Solid-state dinuclear-to-trinuclear conversion in an oxalato-bridged chromium(III)-cobalt(II) complex as a new route toward single-molecule magnets.
2011
A novel bis(oxalato)chromium(III) salt of a ferromagnetically coupled, oxalato-bridged dinuclear chromium(III)-cobalt(II) complex of formula [CrL(ox)(2)CoL'(H(2)O)(2)][CrL(ox)(2)]·4H(2)O (1) has been self-assembled in solution using different aromatic α,α'-diimines as blocking ligands, such as 2,2'-bipyridine (L = bpy) and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L' = Me(2)phen). Thermal dehydration of 1 leads to an intriguing solid-state reaction between the S = 3/2 Cr(III) anions and the S = 3 Cr(III)Co(II) cations to give a ferromagnetically coupled, oxalato-bridged trinuclear chromium(III)-cobalt(II) complex of formula {[CrL(ox)(2)](2)CoL'} (2). Complex 2 possesses a moderately anisotropic S =…
Enzymatic and Chemo-Enzymatic Approaches Towards Natural and Non-Natural Alkaloids: Indoles, Isoquinolines, and Others
2010
Abstract The multi-step enzyme catalysed biosyntheses of monoterpenoid indole and isoquinoline alkaloids are described. Special emphasis is placed on those pathways leading to alkaloids of pharmacological and medicinal significance which have been fully elucidated at the enzyme level. The successful identification and cloning of cDNAs of single enzymes and their application provides great opportunities to develop novel strategies for both in vitro and in vivo alkaloid production in whole plants or tissue cultures, as well as in microbial systems such as Escherichia coli and yeast. Enzyme crystallisation, 3D analyses and site-directed mutation allowed rational engineering of enzyme substrate…
The 2-oxoglutarate binding site of prolyl 4-hydroxylase. Identification of distinct subsites and evidence for 2-oxoglutarate decarboxylation in a lig…
1984
The structure and function of the 2-oxoglutarate binding site of prolyl 4-hydroxylase was studied by assaying the inhibitory potential of 24 selected aliphatic or aromatic compounds. All except one of them inhibited the enzyme competitively with respect to 2-oxoglutarate and noncompetitively with respect to Fe2+, the Ki values ranging from 0.8 microM to over 15 mM. The Ki values for the two most effective inhibitors, pyridine 2,5-dicarboxylate and 2,4-dicarboxylate, were about 0.8 microM and 2 microM, these compounds being the most potent inhibitors of prolyl 4-hydroxylase with respect to 2-oxoglutarate known so far. Only one of the compounds tested, 2-oxoadipinate, was able to support hydr…
Significance of various enzymes in the control of reactive metabolites
1987
Most chemical carcinogens are relatively inert and need metabolic activation to the ultimately carcinogenic species. The concentration of such species is controlled by several different enzymes. Especially well studied is the important group of enzymes responsible for the control of reactive epoxides. Many natural, as well as man-made foreign compounds, including pharmaceuticals, possess olefinic or aromatic double bonds. Such compounds can be transformed to epoxides by microsomal monooxygenases present in many mammalian organs. By virtue of their electrophilic reactivity, such epoxides may spontaneously react with nucleophilic centres in the cell and thus covalently bind to DNA, RNA and pr…
(S)-Mandelic acid enolate as a chiral benzoyl anion equivalent for the enantioselective synthesis of non-symmetrically substituted benzoins
2011
A strategy for the enantioselective synthesis of non-symmetrically substituted benzoins from (S)-mandelic acid and aromatic aldehydes has been developed. This strategy is based on a diastereoselective aldol reaction of the lithium enolate of the 1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with aromatic aldehydes, which gives the corresponding aldols in good yields. Subsequent hydroxyl group protection as MEM ethers, basic hydrolysis of the dioxolanone ring, oxidative decarboxylation of the α-hydroxy acid moiety, and hydroxyl group deprotection provides chiral non-symmetrically substituted benzoins with high enantiomeric excesses.

Indirect analysis of urea herbicides from environmental water using solid-phase microextraction.
2000
We described here a solid-phase microextraction procedure used to extract six urea pesticides-- chlorsulfuron, fluometuron, isoproturon, linuron, metobromuron and monuron--from environmental samples. Two polydimethylsiloxanes and a polyacrylate fiber (PA) are compared. The extraction time, pH control, addition of NaCl to the water and the influence of organic matter such as humic acid on extraction efficiency were examined to achieve a sensitive method. Determination was carried out by gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection. The proposed method requires the extraction of 2 ml of sample (pH 4, 14.3%, w/v, NaCl) for 60 min with the PA fiber. The limits of detection range from 0…
Allylated cyclodextrins as effective affinity materials in chemical sensing of volatile aromatic hydrocarbons using an optical planar Bragg grating s…
2013
We report on the application of perallyl-substituted α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins to an optical planar Bragg grating refractive index sensor for the effective sensitization of the sensor for airborne volatile aromatic hydrocarbons. Thereby, the emphasis of this work lies on the comparison of the different cyclodextrin types regarding their suitability as affinity material assessed by the sensors sensitivity and response behavior. The opto-chemical sensor device showed an immediate and quick response to the application of the investigated analytes benzene, toluene and m-xylene as well as a linear dependence on the concentration of those analytes. Studies on the sensors sensitivity depending on…
