Experimental performance evaluation of a vapour compression refrigerating plant when replacing R22 with alternative refrigerants

2011

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental analysis comparing the performance of a vapour compression refrigerating unit operating with R22, and its performance in comparison to a new HFC fluid, substituting the former according to Regulation No 2037/2000. In particular, the plant working efficiency was first tested with R22 and then with three new HFC fluids: R417A, R422A and R422D. The investigation verified that despite the case of substitution and the advantage of being able to continue to use mineral oil as a lubricant in the compressor, the performance with the new tested fluids did not result as efficient as when using R22.

LPV Model Identification For The Stall And Surge Control of a Jet Engine

2001

Abstract The problem of identifying discrete-time Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) models of non-linear or time-varying systems for gain scheduling control is considered assuming that inputs, outputs and the scheduling parameters are measured, and a form of the functional dependence of the coefficients on the parameters is known. The identification procedure is applied to the controlled model of compressors for jet engines. The model is controlled in order to avoid rotating stall and surge. Aim of the present paper is to identify the LPV model based on the nonlinear model of compressors in order to design a robust gain scheduling predictive controller.

Performance maps for an air-cooled air conditioning system as a preliminary instrument for the diagnosis of evaporator fouling

2019

Abstract During the past few decades, there has been increased interest in the development of automated approaches for detecting and diagnosing faults in air conditioning systems. Among them, thermoeconomic diagnosis is a technique which involves the use of exergy analysis. As a first step towards improving its performance, this work is focused on the thermodynamic and exergy analysis of a direct expansion air conditioning system used in small commercial building applications. The analysis was carried out by means of experimental activities on a 17.5 kW rooftop unit installed at the Herrick Laboratories, Purdue University, Indiana (USA). The system under investigation was equipped with a va…

CFD prediction of shell-side flow and mass transfer in regular fiber arrays

2021

Numerical simulations were conducted for fully developed, steady-state flow with mass transfer in fiber bundles arranged in regular lattices. The porosity was 0.5 and the Schmidt number 500. Several combinations of axial flow, transverse flow and flow attack angles in the cross-section plane were considered. The axial and transverse Reynolds numbers Rez , ReT were made to vary from 10(^−4) to 10(^2). Concentration boundary conditions, and the definition of an average Sherwood number, were addressed. Results for the hydraulic permeability were compared with the literature. Both hexagonal and square lattices were found to be hydraulically almost isotropic up to transverse flow Reynolds number…

Adaptive Control of a Gas Turbine Engine for Axial Compressor Faults

1996

An adaptive control system for a gas turbine engine which diagnoses conditions of axial compressor faults is proposed and analyzed. Nonlinear models of the gas turbine, neural networks and genetic algorithms are used in this research. The adaptive control system minimizes the reduction in gas turbine performance deriving from non-destructive faults. In the absence of faults, the system automatically performs the optimization of the engine between overhauls. Improvements concern the definition of adaptive control with faults in progress, and the real-time optimization of the engine during its operative life between overhauls. Simulation results of the suggested control system are also discus…

Hydraulic assessment of an upgraded pipework arrangement for the DEMO divertor plasma facing components cooling circuit

2021

Abstract In the context of the Work Package DIVertor (WPDIV) of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been carried out by University of Palermo in cooperation with ENEA to assess the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cooling system, concentrating the attention on its 2019 Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) configuration, relevant to DEMO baseline 2017. The research activity has been performed following a theoretical-numerical technique based on the finite volume method and adopting the well-known ANSYS CFX CFD code. The PFCs cooling circuit thermal-hydraulic performances under nominal steady-state conditions, assessed mainly in terms of coolant total pressure drop, c…

Energy oscillations and a possible route to chaos in a modified Riga dynamo

2010

Starting from the present version of the Riga dynamo experiment with its rotating magnetic eigenfield dominated by a single frequency we ask for those modifications of this set-up that would allow for a non-trivial magnetic field behaviour in the saturation regime. Assuming an increased ratio of azimuthal to axial flow velocity, we obtain energy oscillations with a frequency below the eigenfrequency of the magnetic field. These new oscillations are identified as magneto-inertial waves that result from a slight imbalance of Lorentz and inertial forces. Increasing the azimuthal velocity further, or increasing the total magnetic Reynolds number, we find transitions to a chaotic behaviour of th…

In-situ diagnostic of ultrashort probes based on Kerr-index transient Bragg grating

2019

Pump-probe experiments are essential tools to investigate ultrafast dynamics of laser-matter interaction. We are particularly interested in the dynamics of transparent dielectrics under high numerical aperture focusing. Two main challenges arise for the weak probe pulse. First, we need a precise knowledge of the probe delay with respect to the pump pulse. Second, dispersion compensation of the ultrashort probe pulse generally requires a prism compressor, which can generate angular dispersion, and therefore incorrect interpretation of the pumpprobe measurements.

Development of “Design of Experiments” for modelling direct expansion air-conditioning systems under variable cooling loads and faulty operating cond…

2019

Air conditioning systems are widely adopted in the building sector and are generally responsible for high energy consumption. Part of this consumption is related to the poor maintenance adopted by plant owner over time, which causes energy performance degradation. Typical faults, such as fouling or improper refrigerant charge have been shown to heavily impact on energy consumption of these systems. In order to support cost-effective maintenance schedule, Fault Detection and Diagnosis Technique are under investigation in the world. However, in order to devise a diagnostic method a preliminary modelling of air conditioning system is due. To this aim, a test procedure which requires the least …
