A word prediction methodology for automatic sentence completion
2015
Word prediction generally relies on n-grams occurrence statistics, which may have huge data storage requirements and does not take into account the general meaning of the text. We propose an alternative methodology, based on Latent Semantic Analysis, to address these issues. An asymmetric Word-Word frequency matrix is employed to achieve higher scalability with large training datasets than the classic Word-Document approach. We propose a function for scoring candidate terms for the missing word in a sentence. We show how this function approximates the probability of occurrence of a given candidate word. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms non neural network lang…

TH-C-AUD A-07: Evaluation of the Correction Factor Due to the Lack of Full Scatter Conditions in Cs-137 and Ir-192 Brachytherapy Dosimetric Studies
2008
Purpose: Use of a finite phantom to derive dose rate distributions around brachytherapysources implies a lack of backscattering material near the phantom periphery. Conventional planning algorithms and newly‐developed 3D correction algorithms are based on physics data under full scatter conditions. Presently, most published Monte Carlodosimetric studies have been obtained using either a spherical phantom (15cm in radius) or a cylinder phantom (40×40cm2). The study objective was to derive a simple relationship to correlate the radial dose function, g(r), obtained for each one of these phantoms to that obtained for an unbounded phantom. Method and Materials: Assuming bare point sources of 137…

Activities with Educational Robotics: Research Model and Tools for Evaluation of Progress
2019
The use of robots in the learning process has been popular since S. Papert developed his LOGO Turtle idea and argued that students can construct their own knowledge, test their constructive solutions and be motivated to learn if they use robotics in the learning process. Today, the idea of using elements of robotics in the learning process is no longer new and innovative but there are still elements that can be developed and issues that should be discussed. In this chapter, the authors provide the research model and five research tools (structured observation protocol, evaluation of the possible risks of early school leaving to be filled in by teachers before and after activities, students’…
Potential role of p53 protein as a novel biomarker of sperm quality, able to predict the success of ART techniques. EcoFoodFertility Project
2018
Introduction: Protein p53 is well known as “The guardian of genome”; it changes its concentration in human spermatozoa DNAin relation to the damage of the latter. It has been suggested thatthe role of the p53 ancestral gene was to ensure the integrity ofthe genomic germline and the fidelity of the evelopment process. The aim of this study is to evaluate if different concentrations of p53 protein in human spermatozoa could influence embryo quality and pregnancy rate and possibly representing a potential predictive marker of sperm quality for successful fertilization .Methods: From July 2013 to June 2017 we have examinatedretrospectively 79 couples with 2-5 years of infertility history.Males had…
Kerr Combs and Telecommunications Components for the Generation and High-Dimensional Quantum Processing of d-Level Cluster States
2019
Large and complex optical quantum states are a key resource for fundamental science and applications such as quantum communications, information processing, and metrology. In this context, cluster states are a particularly important class because they enable the realization of universal quantum computers by means of the so-called ‘one-way’ scheme, where processing operations are performed through measurements on the state. While two-level (i.e. qubit) cluster states have been realized thus far, further boosting this computational resource by increasing the number of particles comes at the price of significantly reduced coherence time and detection rates, as well as increased sensitivity to …
Systems Biology, Bioinformatics and Medicine Approaches to Cancer Progression Outcomes
2011
Because of the complexity of carcinogenesis and tumour development, it is critical to understand the underlying organizing principles. In this chapter a possible approach is illustrated, starting with a description of breast cancer prognosis as a function of three powerful biological motifs derived from gene expression profiling. A proliferation metagene describing the transition from slow to fast proliferation leads to the most dramatic aggravation of prognosis. A second immune cell metagene represents an opponent of tumour evolution, whereby only fast-proliferating tumours that are not recognized and eliminated by immune cells can progress. In the absence of endocrine treatment, a third m…
