Comparison between whole-body MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging and PET/CT in staging newly diagnosed FDG-avid lymphomas.

2015

Abstract Objectives To compare whole body-MRI (WB-MRI) with diffusion-weighted imaging and FDG-PET/CT in staging newly diagnosed FDG-avid lymphomas. Methods 68 patients (37 males, 31 females; median age 42 years; range 15–86 years) with histologically confirmed lymphoma (37 Classical Hodgkin, 16 Diffuse large B-cell, 10 Follicular, 5 Mantle cell) underwent both MRI and FDG-PET/CT before treatment. Ann Arbor stages obtained with WB-MRI and FDG-PET/CT were compared using Cohen’s k statistics. Moreover WB-MRI and FDG-PET/CT stages were compared with the pathological stages obtained after the diagnostic iter using also bone marrow and available biopsies if clinically indicated. Results The agre…

Impact of intravascular enhancement, heart rate, and calcium score on diagnostic accuracy in multislice computed tomography coronary angiography.

2005

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of intravascular enhancement, heart rate, and calcium score on diagnostic accuracy in the detection of significant coronary artery stenosis using 16-row multislice computed tomography (MSCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients (88 males; 59+/-11 years) with suspected coronary artery disease who had undergone conventional coronary angiography (CA) and MSCT-CA were retrospectively enrolled for the study. Patients underwent a MSCT-CA, with the following protocol: collimation 16x0.75 mm, gantry rotation time 420 ms, feed/rotation 2.8 mm, kV 120, mAs 400-500. The protocol for contrast material administration was 100 ml of Iodixanol 320 mgI/ml at 4 ml/s and …

A Volumetric Method for Quantification of Cerebral Vasospasm in a Murine Model of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

2018

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a subtype of hemorrhagic stroke. Cerebral vasospasm that occurs in the aftermath of the bleeding is an important factor determining patient outcome and is therefore frequently taken as a study endpoint. However, in small animal studies on SAH, quantification of cerebral vasospasm is a major challenge. Here, an ex vivo method is presented that allows quantification of volumes of entire vessel segments, which can be used as an objective measure to quantify cerebral vasospasm. In a first step, endovascular casting of the cerebral vasculature is performed using a radiopaque casting agent. Then, cross-sectional imaging data are acquired by micro computed tomograp…

The role of combined techniques of scintigraphy and SPECT/CT in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism

2019

Abstract Rationale: Primary hyperparathyroidism, usually as a result of a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland, represents more than 90% cases of patients evaluated for hypercalcemia. Combined techniques of preoperative scintigraphy and SPECT/CT serve as a successful minimally-invasive parathyroidectomy. This recent imaging method provides four-dimensional functional images with advanced contrast resolution which greatly facilitates preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas. Patient concerns: We presented the case of a male Caucasian patient, aged 67 years, who was investigated for hypercalcemia. Increased levels of parathormone, cervical ultrasonography without pathological changes, …

A multicenter 12-month experience with a new iliac side-branched device for revascularization of hypogastric arteries.

2016

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the 1-year safety and efficacy of a new iliac side-branched device (IBD) for revascularization of the hypogastric arteries. Methods Patients receiving the E-liac (Jotec GmbH, Hechingen, Germany) side-branched device at six German vascular centers either as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with abdominal aortic aneurysm exclusion were included in a prospectively created data bank. Collected data were analyzed for baseline characteristics, procedural events, and clinical follow-up; variables included endoleaks, reinterventions, and internal iliac artery (IIA) patency. Results Between January 2012 and January 2015, a total of…

Long-term results of simplified frozen elephant trunk technique in complicated acute type A aortic dissection: A case-control study.

2016

Aim To describe the long-term experience of a simplified frozen elephant trunk technique (sFETT) used in complicated acute type A aortic dissection (AAAD) treatment. Methods and results Between January 2001 and December 2012, 34 patients (mean age 59.9 ± 11.0 years) with complicated AAAD (DeBakey I) underwent an emergency surgery including sFETT. sFETT consisted in gluing the dissected aortic arch wall layers with gelatine-resorcinol adhesive and video-assisted antegrade open arch aortic stent-graft deployment in the arch or proximal descending aorta. In addition to sFETT, the aortic root was addressed with standard techniques. A 30-day mortality was 14.7% (five patients) due to bleeding (1…

Mid-term Results of Chimney and Periscope Grafts in Supra-aortic Branches in High Risk Patients

2017

Purpose Report mid-term outcomes of thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) with chimney and periscope grafts (CPG) in supra-aortic branches (SAB). Methods Retrospective analysis, from October 2009 to May 2014, of patients with aneurysms requiring TEVAR with zone 0/1/2 proximal landing in association with at least one CPG in the SAB. All patients were considered at high risk for conventional surgery. Peri-operative mortality and morbidity, retrograde type A dissection, maximum aortic transverse diameter (TD) and its post-operative evolution, endoleak, survival, freedom from cardiovascular re-interventions, and CPG freedom from occlusion during the follow-up were analysed. Results Fort…

The Impact of 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT and PET/MRI on the Management of Prostate Cancer.

2018

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a transmembrane protein with significantly increased expression in the cells and metastases of prostate carcinoma (CaP). PSMA-expression correlates with higher serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a higher Gleason score (GS). This finding has led to the development of novel imaging modalities such as 68Ga-/18F-labeled PSMA positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI). This article reviews the literature pertaining to various new imaging technologies for the management of CaP. PSMA positron emission tomography/computed tomography appears to be an exce…

Quantitation of Microcomputed Tomography-Imaged Ocular Microvasculature

2010

To quantitatively assess microvascular dimensions in the eyes of neonatal wild-type and VEGF(120)-tg mice, using a novel combination of techniques which permit three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction.A novel combination of techniques was developed for the accurate 3D imaging of the microvasculature and demonstrated on the hyaloid vasculature of the neonatal mouse eye. Vascular corrosion casting is used to create a stable replica of the vascular network and X-ray microcomputed tomography (muCT) to obtain the 3D images. In-house computer-aided image analysis techniques were then used to perform a quantitative morphological analysis of the images. With the use of these methods, differences …

Brachytherapy organ dose estimation using Monte Carlo simulations of realistic patient models

2018

Radiation Therapy Planning Systems (RTPS) currently used in hospitals contain algorithms based on deterministic simplifications that do not properly consider electrons lateral transport in the areas where there are changes of density, and as a result, erroneous dose predictions could be produced. According to this, the present work proposes the use of Monte Carlo method in brachytherapy planning systems, which could affect positively on the radiotherapy treatment planning, since it provides results that are more accurate and takes into account the in homogeneities density variations. This paper presents a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of a brachytherapy prostate treatment with I-125 seeds, us…
