Building a medical research cloud in the EASI-CLOUDS project

2015

Summary The demand for Information Technology (IT) resources is constantly growing in the scientific area. The ability to store and process increasing amounts of data has transformed many research disciplines like the life sciences, which now rely on complex data processing and data analytics. Cloud computing can provide researchers with scalable and easy-to-use hardware and software resources and allows on-demand access to services, tools, or even complete work environments. The European research project EASI-CLOUDS has developed a service delivery platform with special regard to service integration, monitoring and management, and the negotiation of service level agreements. In order to de…

MonPaaS: An Adaptive Monitoring Platformas a Service for Cloud Computing Infrastructures and Services

2015

This paper presents a novel monitoring architecture addressed to the cloud provider and the cloud consumers. This architecture offers a monitoring platform-as-a-Service to each cloud consumer that allows to customize the monitoring metrics. The cloud provider sees a complete overview of the infrastructure whereas the cloud consumer sees automatically her cloud resources and can define other resources or services to be monitored. This is accomplished by means of an adaptive distributed monitoring architecture automatically deployed in the cloud infrastructure. This architecture has been implemented and released under GPL license to the community as “MonPaaS”, open source software for integra…

To sit or to stand, that is the question : examining the effects of work posture change on the well-being at work of software professionals

2017

Despite the central role of human resources in determining the success of software companies, relatively little academic research has been conducted on the well-being at work aspect of software professionals. This study aims to address the aforementioned gap by examining the effects of using standing instead of sitting workstations on the well-being at work of software professionals in terms of their physical activity, mental alertness, stress, and musculoskeletal strain. An intervention study consisting of two measurements was conducted for 29 employees of a large Finnish software company by using questionnaires and the Firstbeat Lifestyle Assessment service. The findings of the study sugg…

Joint Radio and Computational Resource Allocation in IoT Fog Computing

2018

The current cloud-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) model has revealed great potential in offering storage and computing services to the IoT users. Fog computing, as an emerging paradigm to complement the cloud computing platform, has been proposed to extend the IoT role to the edge of the network. With fog computing, service providers can exchange the control signals with the users for specific task requirements, and offload users’ delay-sensitive tasks directly to the widely distributed fog nodes at the network edge, and thus improving user experience. So far, most existing works have focused on either the radio or computational resource allocation in the fog computing. In this work, we inve…

Harnessing ICT to develop community and identity: a model for academic departments

2006

Universities have been early adopters of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). However, does availability imply use? How is ICT being used by academic departments? This article addresses these questions, and discusses the use of ICT to support research, instruction and service, but more specifically, the use of ICT to enhance a sense of identity and community across all members of a department. The authors' observations of university departments across the Atlantic reveal very limited uses of ICT. A democratic web-based academic departmental community model is proposed to assist in the strengthening of departmental identity and community as well as advancing its mission. Concept…

Context-aware vehicular cyber-physical systems with cloud support: architecture, challenges, and solutions

2014

[EN] The advances in wireless communication techniques, mobile cloud computing, and context-aware technologies boost a growing interest in the design, development, and deployment of vehicular networks for emerging applications. This leads to an increasing evolutionary tendency to change from vehicular networks toward cloud-assisted context-aware vehicular cyber-physical systems. In this article, we first propose a multi-layered context-aware architecture and introduce two crucial service components, vehicular social networks and context-aware vehicular security. Then we propose an application scenario regarding the context-aware dynamic parking services by illuminating the cloud-assisted ar…

A genetic approach for adding QoS to distributed virtual environments

2007

Distributed virtual environment (DVE) systems have been designed last years as a set of distributed servers. These systems allow a large number of remote users to share a single 3D virtual scene. In order to provide quality of service in a DVE system, clients should be properly assigned to servers taking into account system throughput and system latency. The latter one is composed of both network and computational delays. This highly complex problem is known as the quality of service (QoS) problem. In this paper, we study the implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA) for solving the QoS problem in DVE systems. Performance evaluation results show that, due to its ability of both finding goo…

Antecedents of online banking satisfaction and loyalty: empirical evidence from Finland

2009

This study endeavours to contribute to a better understanding of Service Quality (SQ) in online banking by examining the various dimensions related to creating a satisfactory online banking experience. The authors develop a conceptual model and test it with a convenience sample of 183 online banking users. The empirical test of the model finds strong support for the links between perceived security and Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease Of Use (PEOU), reliability and PU and PEOU, between PEOU and satisfaction and finally between satisfaction and loyalty. The study finally provides both theoretical and practical contributions, outlines the main limitations of the study and gives id…

Trust enhancement of P2PSIP communication systems

2011

Today, peer-to-peer (P2P) session initiation protocol (SIP)-based communication systems have attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The decentralised nature of P2P might provide the distributed P2P communication system without help of the traditional SIP server. However, it comes to the cost of reduced trustworthiness and may cause security problems, e.g., privacy leaks, unpredictable availability, etc. In this paper, we investigate P2PSIP security issues and propose a subjective logic-based trust model that offers trust-based security services during P2PSIP session establishment. The main issues considered in this model include opinion calculation, opinion maintenance, d…

A Quantum-Inspired Classifier for Early Web Bot Detection

2022

This paper introduces a novel approach, inspired by the principles of Quantum Computing, to address web bot detection in terms of real-time classification of an incoming data stream of HTTP request headers, in order to ensure the shortest decision time with the highest accuracy. The proposed approach exploits the analogy between the intrinsic correlation of two or more particles and the dependence of each HTTP request on the preceding ones. Starting from the a-posteriori probability of each request to belong to a particular class, it is possible to assign a Qubit state representing a combination of the aforementioned probabilities for all available observations of the time series. By levera…
