ICA of full complex-valued fMRI data using phase information of spatial maps.

2015

Background ICA of complex-valued fMRI data is challenging because of the ambiguous and noisy nature of the phase. A typical solution is to remove noisy regions from fMRI data prior to ICA. However, it may be more optimal to carry out ICA of full complex-valued fMRI data, since any filtering or voxel-based processing may disrupt information that can be useful to ICA. New method We enable ICA of the full complex-valued fMRI data by utilizing phase information of estimated spatial maps (SMs). The SM phases are first adjusted to properly represent spatial phase changes of all voxels based on estimated time courses (TCs), and then these are used to segment the voxels into BOLD-related and unwant…

Speckle based sensing device for fast detection of malaria

2012

We propose a new technique for malaria detection. It is based upon extraction of correlation based statistics of speckle patterns generated while illuminating red blood cells with a laser and inspecting them under a microscope.

Salient Pixels and Dimensionality Reduction for Display of Multi/Hyperspectral Images

2012

International audience; Dimensionality Reduction (DR) of spectral images is a common approach to different purposes such as visualization, noise removal or compression. Most methods such as PCA or band selection use either the entire population of pixels or a uniformly sampled subset in order to compute a projection matrix. By doing so, spatial information is not accurately handled and all the objects contained in the scene are given the same emphasis. Nonetheless, it is possible to focus the DR on the separation of specific Objects of Interest (OoI), simply by neglecting all the others. In PCA for instance, instead of using the variance of the scene in each spectral channel, we show that i…

Multispectral colour analysis for quantitative evaluation of pseudoisochromatic color deficiency tests

2010

Multispectral color analysis was used for spectral scanning of Ishihara and Rabkin color deficiency test book images. It was done using tunable liquid-crystal LC filters built in the Nuance II analyzer. Multispectral analysis keeps both, information on spatial content of tests and on spectral content. Images were taken in the range of 420-720nm with a 10nm step. We calculated retina neural activity charts taking into account cone sensitivity functions, and processed charts in order to find the visibility of latent symbols in color deficiency plates using cross-correlation technique. In such way the quantitative measure is found for each of diagnostics plate for three different color deficie…

COLOR MEDICAL IMAGE COMPRESSED USING QUINCUNX WAVELETS AND SPIHT CODING

2013

In the field of medical diagnostics, interested parties have resorted increasingly to color medical imaging. It is well established that the accuracy and completeness of diagnosis are initially connected with the image quality, but the quality of the image is itself dependent on a number of factors including primarily the processing that an image must undergo to enhance its quality. This paper introduces an algorithm for color medical image compression based on the quincunx wavelets coupled with SPÏHT coding algorithm.  In order to enhance the compression by our algorithm, we have compared the results obtained with those of other methods containing wavelet transforms. For this reason, we …

Hardware-accelerated spike train generation for neuromorphic image and video processing

2014

Recent studies concerning Spiking Neural Networks show that they are a powerful tool for multiple applications as pattern recognition, image tracking, and detection tasks. The basic functional properties of SNN reside in the use of spike information encoding as the neurons are specifically designed and trained using spike trains. We present a novel and efficient frequency encoding algorithm with Gabor-like receptive fields using probabilistic methods and targeted to FPGA for online pro-cessing. The proposed encoding is versatile, modular and, when applied to images, it is able to perform simple image transforms as edge detection, spot detection or removal, and Gabor-like filtering without a…

Frequency spike encoding using Gabor-like receptive fields

2014

Abstract Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) are a popular field of study. For a proper development of SNN algorithms and applications, special encoding methods are required. Signal encoding is the first step since signals need to be converted into spike trains as the primary input to an SNN. We present an efficient frequency encoding system using receptive fields. The proposed encoding is versatile and it can provide simple image transforms like edge detection, spot detection or removal, or Gabor-like filtering. The proposed encoding can be used in many application areas as image processing and signal processing for detection and classification.

Salient Spin Images: A Descriptor for 3D Object Recognition

2018

In the last decades a wide range of algorithms have been devoted to recognize 3D free-from objects under real conditions such as occlusions, clutters, rotation, scale and translation. Spin image is one of these algorithms known to be robust to rotation, translation, occlusions up to 70% and clutters up to 60%, but still suffer from scaling, resolution changes and it is time consuming. In this paper we present a novel approach based on spin images, called salient spin images (SSI). This method enhances spin images algorithm based on its limits. Particularly, it decreases significantly the complexity of the algorithm using DoG detector, it shows a higher performance due to the relevant locali…

New stage-discharge relationship for inclined non-rectangular weirs

2018

Abstract In this paper, the outflow process of inclined non-rectangular weirs is studied applying the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. At first, a new stage-discharge equation, applicable for the non-rectangular weirs having a different geometrical shape (parabolic, semicircular, inverted semicircular), is theoretically deduced using a characteristic width. Then, this power stage-discharge relationship (Eq. (17) ) is calibrated and tested using measurements carried out by Raiknar for parabolic, semicircular and inverted semicircular weirs having different inclination respect to the vertical (10°, 20°, 30°, 40° and 45°). For each geometrical shape, the analysis…
