Effective elastic properties of biocomposites using 3D computational homogenization and X-ray microcomputed tomography

A 3D computational homogenization method based on X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) was proposed and implemented to investigate how the fiber weight fraction, orthotropy and orientation distribution affect the effective elastic properties of regenerated cellulose fiber-polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites. MESH COMPARISON USING ATTRIBUTE DEVIATION METRIC

We propose a mesh comparison method using a new attribute deviation metric. The considered meshes contain geometrical and appearance attributes (material color, texture, temperature, etc.). The proposed deviation metric computes local differences between the attributes of two meshes. A mesh comparison assessment can be done easily and quickly using this metric. The techniques proposed are applicable in a number of ways, e.g. 3D matching and registration, and the example described in the paper is the simplification of a surface by iteratively reducing its complexity according to an error metric. Biologically Inspired Model for Inference of 3D Shape from Texture.

A biologically inspired model architecture for inferring 3D shape from texture is proposed. The model is hierarchically organized into modules roughly corresponding to visual cortical areas in the ventral stream. Initial orientation selective filtering decomposes the input into low-level orientation and spatial frequency representations. Grouping of spatially anisotropic orientation responses builds sketch-like representations of surface shape. Gradients in orientation fields and subsequent integration infers local surface geometry and globally consistent 3D depth. Automatic correction of the effects of the light source on spherical objects. An application to the analysis of hyperspectral images of citrus fruits

This study proposes a method for correcting the adverse effects produced by the curvature of spherical objects in acquiring images with a computer vision system. Its suitability has been illustrated in a specific case of citrus fruits. The images of this kind of fruit are darker in areas nearer the edge than in the centre, and this makes them more difficult to analyse. This methodology considers the fruit as being a Lambertian ellipsoidal surface and produces a 3D model of the fruit. An Automatic Three-Dimensional Fuzzy Edge Detector

Three-dimensional object analysis is of particular interest in many research fields. In this context, the most common data representation is boundary mesh, namely, 2D surface embedded in 3D space. We will investigate the problem of 3D edge extraction, that is, salient surface regions characterized by high flexure. Our automatic edge detection method assigns a value, proportional to the local bending of the surface, to the elements of the mesh. Moreover, a proper scanning window, centered on each element, is used to discriminate between smooth zones of the surface and its edges. Such images can be used to generate views of the scene by projecting the spherical surface onto planes tangent to the sphere. Boolean operations with implicit and parametric representation of primitives using R-functions

We present a new and efficient algorithm to accurately polygonize an implicit surface generated by multiple Boolean operations with globally deformed primitives. Our algorithm is special in the sense that it can be applied to objects with both an implicit and a parametric representation, such as superquadrics, supershapes, and Dupin cyclides. The input is a constructive solid geometry tree (CSG tree) that contains the Boolean operations, the parameters of the primitives, and the global deformations.
