The Glory of the Artist

2018

In 1490, in a chapel of the Duomo, the city of Florence inaugurated a monument in praise of Giotto, adorned with a sculpted portrait by Benedetto da Maiano of the artist painting an icon of Christ.

Miguel del Prado, pintor de retablos en Valencia. Su fallecimiento en las Germanías (1521)

2017

Miguel del Prado, a painter who formed a company with Miguel Esteve in order to paint the now-lost Valencia town hall chapel in 1519, is an artist for whom there is scant documentary evidence. He has been identified with the anonymous Master of the Grifo, but this has been questioned recently. The author here offers news of a contract given to del Prado for an altarpiece in the Rosary Chapel of the old convent of Santo Domingo in Valencia that he was unable to fulfill due to his untimely death. It has been possible to certify that he perished on the battlefield of Almenara during the Germanias Revolt of 1521. Therefore the chronology for this painter has now been reduced by more than 16 yea…

IDEA: interface dynamics and energetics algorithm.

2007

IDEA, interface dynamics and energetics algorithm, was implemented, in FORTRAN, under different operating systems to mimic dynamics and energetics of elementary events involved in interfacial processes. The code included a parallel elaboration scheme in which both the stochastic and the deterministic components, involved in the developed physical model, worked simultaneously. IDEA also embodied an optionally running VISUAL subroutine, showing the dynamic energy changes caused by the surface events, e.g., occurring at the gas-solid interface. Monte Carlo and ordinary differential equation system subroutines were employed in a synergistic way to drive the occurrence of the elementary events a…

PenRed: An extensible and parallel Monte-Carlo framework for radiation transport based on PENELOPE

2021

Monte Carlo methods provide detailed and accurate results for radiation transport simulations. Unfortunately, the high computational cost of these methods limits its usage in real-time applications. Moreover, existing computer codes do not provide a methodology for adapting these kind of simulations to specific problems without advanced knowledge of the corresponding code system, and this restricts their applicability. To help solve these current limitations, we present PenRed, a general-purpose, stand-alone, extensible and modular framework code based on PENELOPE for parallel Monte Carlo simulations of electron-photon transport through matter. It has been implemented in C++ programming lan…

Dynamic interface for machine vision systems

2002

Iconic programming intends to provide expressive tools to implement, to debug, and to execute programs. For this purpose, visual languages need pictorial constructs and metaphors to guide the design of algorithms in interactive fashion. In the paper a new class of dynamic visual interfaces, named DIVA (Dynamic Interface for Visual Applications), is introduced, its properties are described, and an application to visual compilers in a multi-processors system dedicated to image analysis is given. Moreover, a formal definition of dynamic icon (DI) is also given.

Teaching Argumentation Skills in an Electronic Mail Environment

1997

SUMMARY This paper discusses the qualities of computer‐mediated communication (CMC) relevant to the teaching of argumentation skills. It describes an electronic mail (e‐mail) study experiment carried out in an MEd level course in education. The aim of the experiment was to explore the possibility of using CMC to promote the argumentation skills of university students. The experiment (n = 31) was based on a comparison of tutor‐led seminar mode (2 groups) with a student‐led discussion mode (2 groups) using an e‐mail study. The students practised argumentation during a six‐week e‐mail study period. The comparison group (n = 193) engaged in a traditional self‐study. All the students’ argumentat…

Changes in fish mercury concentrations over 20 years in an acidified lake subject to experimental liming

2007

Abstract Lake Iso Valkjarvi (southern Finland, Europe) was divided in two with a plastic curtain in 1991. One half was neutralized with CaCO 3 , and the other acted as a control. Mercury concentrations of perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) and northern pike ( Esox lucius ) in the limed and control side of the lake were studied both before and after the treatment. Average Hg concentrations of perch and pike were 0.40 and 1.2 μg g −1 (ww) in the early 1980s and 0.25 and 0.72 μg g −1 (ww) a decade later at the time of liming. Ten years after the liming the Hg concentrations of perch in the limed and control sides of the lake were 0.21 and 0.28 μg g −1 (ww) and those of pike were 0.69 and 0.43 μg g −1…

Predation risk allocation or direct vigilance response in the predator interaction between perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and pike (Esox lucius L.)?

2005

Predation risk allocation hypothesis predicts that a prey's response to predator depends on prey's previous experience on predator. Here we tested whether the group of three perch respond differentially to pike, predator of perch, depending on the timing of high constant (HC) and high unpredictable (HU) risk periods within low constant risk periods in short-term (10 h) experiments, and whether the response is stronger during a HU risk period than during a HC risk period. Perch clearly erected the dorsal fin in response to predation risk treatments (pike odour only, odour and visible pike). Decrease in activity and increase in shoaling behaviour were observed mainly during high risk periods.…

Studies on bucephalid digeneans parasitising molluscs and fishes in Finland I. Ecological data and experimental studies

1991

Two types of bucephalid cercariae are reported from the bivalve Anodonta anatina in two Finnish lakes. One, Type A, resembles in gross morphology the cercaria of Bucephalus polymorphus, and the other, Type B, resembles the cercaria of Rhipidocotyle campanula. Type A daughter-sporocysts develop more slowly, have a greater cercarial productivity and exhibit a differential diurnal rhythm to that of Type B. Cercariae of Type A have a shorter longevity than Type B and tend to encyst in the fins rather than the gill-arches of fish intermediate hosts. The main definitive host of Type A is pike Esox lucius and, in the case of Type B, perch Perca fluviatilis. Adults of Types A and B are morphologica…

Chernobyl-derived radiocaesium in fish as dependent on water quality and lake morphometry

1995

137Cs concentrations in perch Perca fluviatilis, pike Esox lucius and roach Rutilus rutilus obtained from lakes of different size and water quality in an area which received about 10–67 kBq m−2137Cs, were compared with environmental data. Radiocaesium concentrations were highest in pike, and were about two to three times higher in the pike and perch than in the roach. The largest perch had about four times more 137Cs than the smallest ones, but the activities in the pike and roach were independent of fish size. All of the water quality parameters examined correlated with 137Cs concentrations in the fish, but the concentrations of 137Cs in the bottom sediment did not. l37Cs fallout and water…
