Fast automated design of waveguide filters using aggressive space mapping with a new segmentation strategy and a hybrid optimization algorithm
2005
Waveguide filters are key elements present in many microwave and millimeter-wave communication systems. In recent times, ever-increasing efforts are being devoted to the development of automated computer-aided design (CAD) tools of such devices. In this paper, a novel CAD tool based on modal analysis methods, which improves the efficiency and robustness of the classical aggressive space-mapping technique, is presented for those purposes. The use of a new segmentation strategy and the hybridization of a specific combination of several well-known optimization algorithms is proposed. The CAD tool has been successfully validated with the practical design of several H-plane coupled cavity filter…
Efficient Analysis and Design Strategies for Evanescent Mode Ridge Waveguide Filters
2006
In this paper, a research on the compromises arisen in the design of traditional evanescent mode waveguide filters is carried out. As a result, clear design methodologies for optimizing length, losses, power handling and spurious-free out-of-band response are developed. In addition, an efficient and very accurate modal analysis tool for this kind of structures is presented. Several filters have been designed according to the different strategies proposed, and a prototype has been finally manufactured. Measurements and filter dimensions validate the proposed design procedures.
The Role of Social and Collaborative Networks in the Development of in-House Multimedia Language Learning Materials
2012
The development of in-house language learning materials has being going on for many decades. In the past, it was difficult for language teachers worldwide to share their in-house materials with other teachers, and so was having access to the materials developed by others. This often produced a feeling of isolation and, very frequently, provoked a duplication of efforts and a bigger investment of time. However, thanks to the Web 2.0 teachers and practitioners worldwide can communicate with each other and share experiences and materials. While this aspect of the so-called Social Web has being successfully exploded in the past few decades, especially in the case of online communities of teache…
Influence of raw data analysis for the use of neural networks for win farms productivity prediction
2011
In the last decade wind energy had a strong growth because of cost effectiveness of the technology and the high remunerative of investments.
Using semantics to facilitate data integration of offshore wind farms
2012
Operation and maintenance play an important role in extracting power from the wind, especially, in offshore wind energy where wind farms are located far off the shore and under harsh weather conditions. Improved operation and maintenance is likely to reduce costs as well as hazard exposure of the employees. Implementation of advanced information technology is thus crucial for operating offshore wind farms effectively and efficiently and hence improves operation and maintenance. However, information availability and reliability are key issues for their use in the offshore wind domain. In addition, the semantic of information has not been exploited thoroughly. This paper describes the develop…
New statistical post processing approach for precise fault and defect localization in TRI database acquired on complex VLSI
2013
International audience; Timing issue, missing or extra state transitions or unusual consumption can be detected and localized by Time Resolved Imaging (TRI) database analysis. Although, long test pattern can challenge this process. The number of photons to process rapidly increases and the acquisition time to have a good signal over noise ratio (SNR) can be prohibitive. As a result, the tracking of the defect emission signature inside a huge database can be quite complicated. In this paper, a method based on data mining techniques is suggested to help the TRI end user to have a good idea about where to start a deeper analysis of the integrated circuit, even with such complex databases.
Ubiquitous Co-Driver System and Its Effects on the Situation Awareness of the Driver
2008
The aim of this paper is to explore the effects of ubiquitous computing in cars on the situation awareness and expectations of the driver. In a driving simulation environment with participants using a co-driver system, we investigated how people took and recovered from misinformation provided by the system. The system presented safety-critical information about the upcoming curves on the road, but in the experiment part of the messages contained false information. The effects of this information on participants’ behavior were investigated. On the grounds of the experiment, we discuss two approaches for investigating drivers’ situational awareness, which are based on either mental workload o…
CAD-Based Training of an Expert System and a Hidden Markov Model for Obstacle Detection in an Industrial Robot Environment
2012
Abstract Deploying industrial robots in harsh outdoor environments require additional functionalities not currently provided. For instance, movement of standard industrial robots are pre-programmed to avoid collision. In dynamic and less structured environments, however, the need for online detection and avoidance of unmodelled objects arises. This paper focus on online obstacle detection using a laser sensor by proposing three different approaches, namely a CAD-based Expert System (ES) and two probabilistic methods based on a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) which requires observation based training. In addition, this paper contributes by providing a comparison between the CAD-based ES and the tw…
A Hybrid Machine Learning and Knowledge Based Approach to Limit Combinatorial Explosion in Biodegradation Prediction
2016
One of the main tasks in chemical industry regarding the sustainability of a product is the prediction of its environmental fate, i.e., its degradation products and pathways. Current methods for the prediction of biodegradation products and pathways of organic environmental pollutants either do not take into account domain knowledge or do not provide probability estimates. In this chapter, we propose a hybrid knowledge-based and machine learning-based approach to overcome these limitations in the context of the University of Minnesota Pathway Prediction System (UM-PPS). The proposed solution performs relative reasoning in a machine learning framework, and obtains one probability estimate fo…
Application of distributed expert systems to the advanced control of smart houses
2003
Abstract A distributed expert system has been proposed for the smart house control. Its configuration is mainly based on the use of distributed nodes connected by means of a CAN network. This kind of systems allow the implementation of highly flexible control systems capable of adapting themselves to different situations. The expert system used is based on Rule Nets (RN), which are a formalism that seeks to express an automatism in a similar way to as would make it a human being: "IF antecedents THEN consequents". But at the same time Rule nets are a tool for the design, analysis and implementation of rule based systems (RBS), and consist on a mathematic-logical structure which analytically…
