Data Backup Dilemma

2016

When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck in 2011, several municipalities lost their residential data including backup. Since none of them had ever considered the total loss of data, data backup policy had been paid little attention. In many cases, the backup tapes were simply stored inside the server room, just beside the server rack. Following the calamity, the Japanese national government tried to introduce a data backup system to municipalities using the cloud. The purpose was to secure the safekeeping of backup data. However, municipalities were reluctant to go along with this since overcoming the loss of network connectivity during an earthquake remained foremost in their minds. The…

A MAS Security Framework Implementing Reputation Based Policies and Owners Access Control

2006

Multi-agent systems expose users to risks related to lack of knowledge above interacting users. Such systems should provide tools to protect their own resources from illegal accesses by unauthorized users. This paper describes a security framework for Multi-agent systems preventing a trusted agent to interact with malicious agents and granting agent and platform resources. This feature is obtained adding an access control mechanism that joins the benefits of Credential Based Access Control, Role Based Access Control and Mandatory Access Control. Authorizations and access control policies are set by XML based policy files. A case study on a distributed document retrieval system is also illus…

Enhancing Privacy and Authorization Control Scalability in the Grid through Ontologies

2009

The use of data Grids for sharing relevant data has proven to be successful in many research disciplines. However, the use of these environments when personal data are involved (such as in health) is reduced due to its lack of trust. There are many approaches that provide encrypted storages and key shares to prevent the access from unauthorized users. However, these approaches are additional layers that should be managed along with the authorization policies. We present in this paper a privacy-enhancing technique that uses encryption and relates to the structure of the data and their organizations, providing a natural way to propagate authorization and also a framework that fits with many u…

Information in the aspect of security threats and challenges

2019

INFORMATION IN THE ASPECT OF SECURITY THREATS AND CHALLENGESIn the article, the author describes the driving force behind deliberate informational activities. He pays particular attention to the current security situation in the information dimension. Existing systems in the area of security management should be resistant to disinformation and informational operations. There is no room for the freedom of interpretation of the information acquired since every decision results in the actions of people, therefore it requires accuracy and caution. This issue takes on a special dimension when it concerns the state, because this environment contains specific features such as a changing environmen…

Computer-aided study of the gas flow within a natural gas storage and the associated collection network

2017

The current paper presents a computer-aided analysis of the way in which a natural gas storage created in a depleted gas deposit and the associated gas collection network are operated, both during the extraction phase and during the injection phase. In a first step, an analysis is carried out on a two-dimensional, nonstationary model for the gas storage, based on the deposit’s geometry and the rock properties, but also on the gas motions. Also, a dynamic simulation of the injection and extraction processes is unfolded, allowing the study and optimisation of elements such as well placement and gas flows through the wells with the goal of maximising the storable gas quantities. A second model…

Hints from the Crowd: A Novel NoSQL Database

2013

The crowd can be an incredible source of information. In particular, this is true for reviews about products of any kind, freely provided by customers through specialized web sites. In other words, they are social knowledge, that can be exploited by other customers. The Hints From the Crowd HFC prototype, presented in this paper, is a NoSQL database system for large collections of product reviews; the database is queried by expressing a natural language sentence; the result is a list of products ranked based on the relevance of reviews w.r.t. the natural language sentence. The best ranked products in the result list can be seen as the best hints for the user based on crowd opinions the revi…

Current communication technologies in language processing

2015

Even the most cutting-edge communication-mediated technology like satellite navigation for orbit positioning, pedestrian movement recognition systems based on inertial sensors, 5G systems, let alone medical devices for coordination of human organs functionality would not be invented without technologies for language processing as an information source between humans and communication systems. Regardless of the way we communicate that is via emails, website short tweets, video conferencing systems, social networking, blogs, instant messaging through websites or mobile applications, or texting only, we use a language that is processed by computer system. Thus, the keynote paper discusses lang…

Wittgenstein on Physics

2019

In this paper, I explore Wittgenstein’s philosophical approach to physics, an approach that crystallises in the Tractatus and is then polished—rather than replaced—in his later writings. The question of Wittgenstein’s attitude towards science has been the subject of much scholarly debate. Wittgenstein maintained throughout his life that philosophy, ethics and religion should be kept separate from the natural sciences. In his view, any attempt to apply scientific methodologies to philosophical, ethical and religious discussions is both dangerous and futile. Some interpreters have read this aspect of Wittgenstein’s thinking as expressing a strong hostility to science: Wittgenstein, they sugge…

Imaginary time propagation code for large-scale two-dimensional eigenvalue problems in magnetic fields

2013

We present a code for solving the single-particle, time-independent Schr\"odinger equation in two dimensions. Our program utilizes the imaginary time propagation (ITP) algorithm, and it includes the most recent developments in the ITP method: the arbitrary order operator factorization and the exact inclusion of a (possibly very strong) magnetic field. Our program is able to solve thousands of eigenstates of a two-dimensional quantum system in reasonable time with commonly available hardware. The main motivation behind our work is to allow the study of highly excited states and energy spectra of two-dimensional quantum dots and billiard systems with a single versatile code, e.g., in quantum …

Towards Modelling Information Security with Key-Challenge Petri Nets

2009

Our global information society is based on distributed wide-area networks. Network security consists of the provisions made in an underlying computer network infrastructure, policies adopted by the network administrator to protect the network-accessible resources from unauthorized access, as well as continuous monitoring and measurement of the network security's effectiveness. In this paper, we describe the use of Petri nets in modelling network security. We propose a new hierarchical method for modelling network attacks and evaluating effectiveness of the corresponding defences. Our model is called Key-Challenge Petri Net (KCPN).
