CAD modelling of the human femur taking into account the structure of the bone

2021

The use of 3D models of the human bone system has great utility in the biomechanical study, due to the fact that these structures cannot be analyzed or tested in vivo. Within this paper, taking into consideration its real bone structure, the human femur CAD modelling is established. Firstly, a preliminary anatomical study is done, in order to highlight the fact that the thigh bone is a heterogeneous structure, consisting of several entities with different mechanical characteristics. The modelling starts from a homogenous 3D model of the femur, from which, every single separate entity is designed and finally they are assembled within a single product assembly. Therefore, the final result ens…

Dialog Structure Automatic Modeling

2010

This paper presents the approach implemented as part of a conversational bot named WIH (Word Intelligent Handler). It has a complex architecture with several components. Some of them are the ER-memory, EP-memory and other minor modules that provide the prototype of good modeling of Spanish sentences. They constitute the knowledge-representation mechanism that is used by WIH to build automatic answers during dialogs with humans. In this paper a small description of these components and some of its interaction is given, along with test cases and a statistical analysis of the results obtained. It is shown here that WIH prototype can adapt its behavior and learning rate of its internal working …

More Than (Single) Text Comprehension? – On University Students’ Understanding of Multiple Documents

2020

The digital revolution has made a multitude of text documents from highly diverse perspectives on almost any topic easily available. Accordingly, the ability to integrate and evaluate information from different sources, known as multiple document comprehension, has become increasingly important. Because multiple document comprehension requires the integration of content and source information across texts, it is assumed to exceed the demands of single text comprehension due to the inclusion of two additional mental representations: the integrated situation model and the intertext model. To date, there is little empirical evidence on commonalities and differences between single text and mult…

Analyzing the Effects of Lexical Cognates on Translation Properties: A Multivariate Product and Process Based Approach

2021

The translation of cognates has received renewed interest in Translation Process Research (Oster (2017) Empir Model Transl Interpret 7:23; Hansen-Schirra et al. (2017) Predicting cognate translation. In: Hansen-Schirra S, Czulo O, Hofmann S (eds) Empirical modelling of translation and interpreting. Language Science Press, Berlin, pp 3–22) but tends to be relatively time-consuming due to the manual identification of cognates and their translations. On the basis of work by Heilmann (Profiling effects of syntactic complexity in translation: a multi-method approach. PhD thesis, 2021) and the structure of the TPR-DB, we devised a relatively simple way to determine the cognate status of ST words …

ASR in Classroom Today : Automatic Visualization of Conceptual Network in Science Classrooms

2017

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) field has improved substantially in the last years. We are in a point never saw before, where we can apply such algorithms in non-ideal conditions such as real classrooms. In these scenarios it is still not possible to reach perfect recognition rates, however we can already take advantage of these improvements. This paper shows preliminary results using ASR in Chilean and Finnish middle and high school to automatically provide teachers a visualization of the structure of concepts present in their discourse in science classrooms. These visualizations are conceptual networks that relate key concepts used by the teacher. This is an interesting tool that gives…

Case assignment, case concord, and quantificational case constructions

2011

Abstract This paper examines a controversial and particularly complex case phenomenon called quantificational case attested in a number of historically unrelated Slavonic and Finno-Ugric languages, and attempts to establish certain novel cross-linguistic generalizations and conclusions. In particular, it will be argued that (i) instead of standard one-to-one case assignment, in which one case assigner is case-related to one case assignee, a many-to-many case flow is attested; (ii) nominal case is not a privilege of full DPs, arguments or thematic roles; (iii) case reflects either local or nonlocal functional structure, whether in the verbal or nominal domain; and that (iv) there is no disti…

An Information Systems Design Theory for Integrated Requirements and Release Management Systems

2009

High-tech companies need to collect and analy- ze requirements and allocate them to appropriate product releases in market-driven product development. Develop- ment activities are typically scattered across multiple sites and involve multiple partners in different countries, complicating requirements and release management. Fle- xible, scalable, and secure groupware-based support for the activities provides substantial payoffs. Yet, the extant literature provides little theoretical guidance for designing and using requirements and release management systems in multi-site, multi-partner environments. This article de- velops the meta-requirements and a meta-design of an Information Systems De…

Comparing fMRI inter-subject correlations between groups using permutation tests

2018

AbstractInter-subject correlation (ISC) based analysis is a conceptually simple approach to analyze functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data acquired under naturalistic stimuli such as a movie. We describe and validate the statistical approaches for comparing ISCs between two groups of subjects implemented in the ISC toolbox, which is an open source software package for ISC-based analysis of fMRI data. The approaches are based on permutation tests. We validated the approaches using five different data sets from the ICBM functional reference battery tasks. First, we created five null datasets (one for each task) by dividing the subjects into two matched groups and assumed that no gr…

The influence of task-irrelevant music on language processing: syntactic and semantic structures.

2011

Recent research has suggested that music and language processing share neural resources, leading to new hypotheses about interference in the simultaneous processing of these two structures. The present study investigated the effect of a musical chord's tonal function on syntactic processing (Experiment 1) and semantic processing (Experiment 2) using a cross-modal paradigm and controlling for acoustic differences. Participants read sentences and performed a lexical decision task on the last word, which was, syntactically or semantically, expected or unexpected. The simultaneously presented (task-irrelevant) musical sequences ended on either an expected tonic or a less-expected subdominant ch…

In praise of artifice reloaded: Caution with natural image databases in modeling vision

2019

Subjective image quality databases are a major source of raw data on how the visual system works in naturalistic environments. These databases describe the sensitivity of many observers to a wide range of distortions of different nature and intensity seen on top of a variety of natural images. Data of this kind seems to open a number of possibilities for the vision scientist to check the models in realistic scenarios. However, while these natural databases are great benchmarks for models developed in some other way (e.g., by using the well-controlled artificial stimuli of traditional psychophysics), they should be carefully used when trying to fit vision models. Given the high dimensionalit…
