On Participating in Communities of Practice
2004
This chapter examines the social practices of three classroom communities where pedagogy in the learning of science draws on the socio-cultural perspective. The pedagogical framework for science education, defined in this study as a participatory approach, views learning as a collective process of meaning-making situated in cultural contexts (e.g. Cole, 1996; Sfard, 1998; Wells; 1999). There are three focuses of interest, namely, the nature of role negotiation between the members of the learning community, the application of cultural tools in collective activity, and the processes of making meaning for a scientific phenomenon. The social practices of the science classroom communities are ap…
MINE - Mobile Learning in Higher Education
2018
Mobile technologies are an important part of our daily life and we carry them with us all the time. Mobile learning is already used a lot in informal and non-formal learning, but in the context of formal learning it is not much used, yet. In the area of formal learning at universities, there is a great need for pedagogic scenarios to encourage educatorsto use these new technologies. It is suggested that educators will need to move beyond the didactic approaches still frequently found in higher education. Social constructivist approaches have been advocated, along with the development of communities of practice to support educators. In addition, more emphasis on learners is required, to unde…
The 21st Century Reforms (Re)Shaping the Education Policy of Inclusive and Special Education in Finland
2021
In recent decades, an essential global aim of the reforms of special education has been the promotion of inclusive education. This article discusses the implementation of reforms with a focus on tiered support systems in the context of Finnish comprehensive school education. Based on earlier literature, legislation, and administrative documents, we provide a background for Finnish education policy and special education reforms. The focus of this article is on the description of parallel reforms targeting the re-structuring of the systems around support for students and funding of education in the 2010s. We discuss the processes leading to these reforms and the reforms themselves. In additio…
Les comparaisons internationales de l'efficience interne des systèmes éducatifs
1999
International audience; International and comparative analysis of the efficiency of educational systems This paper looks at different ways for assessing the efficiency of educational systems from a comparative perspective. This includes the internal effectiveness, namely the analysis of education outcomes such as the expected number of years of schooling, the percentage of pupils reaching the end of a cycle or passing a diploma, pupil performances (both cognitive and non-cognitive achievement). It includes also the external effectiveness such as the impact of education on development and economic growth, (macro perspective) as well as on the professional career of individuals (micro perspec…
WSN localization scheme based on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) for ZigBee Networks
2015
International audience; Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have diverse application domains such as smart home, smart care, industrial, etc. We present a WSN system based on the ZigBee technology (IEEE 802.15.4) in Smart Home. In our paper we interest to ZigBee protocol is often used in medical Rehabilitation, which is a relatively new concept involving wireless transmission of data from the sensors attached to a patient to a distant monitoring station. There is no standardized topology managing the current networks, therefore, we will compare and evaluate the performance the mobility of nodes for star topologies in different scenarios to determine which is the most suitable in a typical hospi…

Building an Ecosystem for Developing Educational Use of Technology in Finnish Schools
2014
The use of ICT in education can be situated to the enhancement of 21st-century skills, like critical thinking, working, collaboration, and global action. From the perspective of the educational sector, the question is on enabling all children an equal possibility to gain the skills and readiness necessary for their personal life, studies, and upcoming working life.
The Effects of Cognitive Strategy Instruction on Knowledge of Math Problem-Solving Processes of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities
2012
This study investigated the effectiveness of Solve It! instruction on students’ knowledge of math problem-solving strategies. Solve It! is a cognitive strategy intervention designed to improve the math problem solving of middle school students with learning disabilities (LD). Participants included seventh- and eighth-grade students with LD ( n = 77) and average-achieving students ( n = 77). We examined treatment effects of the intervention, as well as differential effects of treatment across ability levels, on students’ knowledge of problem-solving strategies using the Math Problem-Solving Assessment. Results showed that students across ability levels who received Solve It! instruction rep…
An attribute based access control scheme for secure sharing of electronic health records
2016
Electronic health records (EHRs) play a vital role in modern health industry, allowing the possibility of flexible sharing of health information in the quest of provisioning advanced and efficient healthcare services for the users. Although sharing of EHRs has significant benefits, given that such records contain lot of sensitive information, secure sharing of EHRs is of paramount importance. Thus, there is a need for the realization of sophisticated access control mechanisms for secure sharing of EHRs, which has attracted significant interest from the research community. The most prominent access control schemes for sharing of EHRs found in literature are role based and such solutions have…
Reconsidering off-task: a comparative study of PDA-mediated activities in four classrooms
2010
Mobile technology is ubiquitous and diverse and permeates many aspects of daily life at home, during leisure activities, and in public spaces. The study presented here is of two sixth grade classes in Michigan, USA and two seventh grade classes in Norway. The students and the teachers in these four classrooms were equipped with mobile technologies (PDAs). We found that the students’ PDA-mediated actions in the classroom were not exclusively used for the tasks and activities set by the teacher, but that the students also used the PDAs on their own initiative – so-called ‘off-task’ activities. We analyze the findings by reconsidering off-task activities from a sociocultural perspective.
