GPU accelerated Monte Carlo simulations of lattice spin models

2011

We consider Monte Carlo simulations of classical spin models of statistical mechanics using the massively parallel architecture provided by graphics processing units (GPUs). We discuss simulations of models with discrete and continuous variables, and using an array of algorithms ranging from single-spin flip Metropolis updates over cluster algorithms to multicanonical and Wang-Landau techniques to judge the scope and limitations of GPU accelerated computation in this field. For most simulations discussed, we find significant speed-ups by two to three orders of magnitude as compared to single-threaded CPU implementations.

Computational cluster validation for microarray data analysis: experimental assessment of Clest, Consensus Clustering, Figure of Merit, Gap Statistic…

2008

Abstract Background Inferring cluster structure in microarray datasets is a fundamental task for the so-called -omic sciences. It is also a fundamental question in Statistics, Data Analysis and Classification, in particular with regard to the prediction of the number of clusters in a dataset, usually established via internal validation measures. Despite the wealth of internal measures available in the literature, new ones have been recently proposed, some of them specifically for microarray data. Results We consider five such measures: Clest, Consensus (Consensus Clustering), FOM (Figure of Merit), Gap (Gap Statistics) and ME (Model Explorer), in addition to the classic WCSS (Within Cluster…

Comparison of Game-Related Statistics in Men's International Championships between Winning and Losing Teams according to Margin of Victory

2014

The aims of this study were (i) to compare water polo game-related statistics by game outcome (winning and losing teams) and margins of victory (close games, unbalanced games, and very unbalanced games), and (ii) to identify characteristics that mark the differences in performances for each group of margin of victory. The game-related statistics of the 308 men's matches played in seven International Championships (Olympic Games, World and European Championships) were analysed. A cluster analysis established three groups (close games, unbalanced games, and very unbalanced games) according to the margin of victory. Differences between game outcomes (winning or losing teams) and margins of vic…

The pedagogy of multiliteracies as a code breaker : A suggestion for a transversal approach to computing education in basic education

2021

While computing has been (re)introduced into the basic education curricula in various countries, its actual implementation appears to be inconsistent. There are schools in which computing education is commonplace, while the implementation seems to be lagging behind in others. There is emerging evidence that some teachers do not consider computing education relevant, meaningful and important and, thus, intentionally neglect its provision. This is problematic as understanding the principles of code and computing is crucial for agentic citizenship in the post-digital era. This paper argues that one main reason for these teachers' reluctance is the economy-driven discursive framing of computing…

Short films : dispersive effects of clip thinking

2013

The New Media have a vast influence on human mind and its cognitive functions. Clip thinking is a state of perception, knowledge and, therefore, consciousness that is formed by the perceptual patterns based on deconstruction of narratives. Practically, the main symptoms of clip thinking are the following: the lack of concentration while dealing with narratives, the incline to multitask work and random access to the information as well as an urge for immediate answers and the frustration if such an answer is impossible to get. Clip thinking is based on the database logic as an opposite to narrative. The present thesis discusses the clip thinking in terms of New Media theory of Lev Manovich a…

Stroke Cognitive Medical Assistant (StrokeCMA)

2018

Stroke is the number two killer after heart disease since it is responsible for almost 10% of all deaths worldwide. The main problem with a stroke is a significant delay in treatment that happened mainly due to inappropriate detection of stroke symptoms or inability of a person to perform further necessary actions, and might cause death, permanent disabilities, as well as more expensive treatment and rehabilitation. Nowadays assessment of a stroke is done by human, following widely adopted FAST approach of stroke assessment. Since a human factor become one of the causes of treatment delay, offered solution will try to minimize this factor. Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Computing, Machi…

Networked Analysis of a Teaching Unit for Primary School Symmetries in the Form of an E-Book

2021

In mathematics education, technology offers many opportunities to enrich curricular contents. Plane symmetries is a topic often skipped by primary teachers. However, it is important and may be worked in attractive ways in dynamic geometry software environments. In any regular classroom there are students with different levels of mathematical attainment, some needing easy tasks while others, particularly mathematically-gifted students, need challenging problems. We present a teaching unit for plane symmetries, adequate for upper primary school grades, implemented in a fully interactive electronic book, with most activities solved in GeoGebra apps. The book allows student to choose which itin…
