Scaffolding by means of scientific concepts: a teacher-guided peer response activity

The paper analyzes the performance of a university student on a peer response activity which is part of an assignment in a writing course for second-year students of English philology. With Vygotsky’s (1987) doctrine of scientific concepts as a lens, it looks at how in the course of the peer response activity the teacher and the students support one another in their respective attempts to teach and learn writing. On Representing Concepts in High-dimensional Linear Spaces

Producing a mathematical model of concepts is a very important issue in artificial intelligence, because if such a model were found this, besides being a very interesting result in its own right, would also contribute to the emergence of what we could call the ‘mathematics of thought.’ One of the most interesting attempts made in this direction is P. Gardenfors’ theory of conceptual spaces, a ¨ theory which is mostly presented by its author in an informal way. The main aim of the present article is contributing to Gardenfors’ theory of conceptual spaces ¨ by discussing some of the advantages which derive from the possibility of representing concepts in high-dimensional linear spaces.

Settore M-GGR/02 - Geografia Economico-PoliticaThe current debate about the Italian territorial reorganization makes again fundamental the concept of «territory». This paper aims to reflect on some important dynamics that concern the idea of territory. More in particular I explore in which form it can be (re)semantised through some tourism representations and narrations able to create specific ways of interaction. By taking into account the case study of the Lonely Planet 2017 digital tourist guidebook dedicated to Sicily that splits (and reorganizes) the island in smaller «regions» it is possible to reflect on a complex space dynamic able to redefine the same idea of territory. Indeed the tourist guidebook uses both texts and geographical maps to propose an anthology of homogeneous and coherent destinations to make the Otherness more accessible for the readers. This process demonstrates how symbolic (re)productions of a territory can give rise to specific constructions of places creating different concepts of region and therefore performative spaces and opportunities of «agency». In other terms the (re)definition of the Sicilian territory proposed by the guide invites tourists to consider a new (narrated) geography invites and invites to interact with it thinking as visitors. From a geographical and cultural point of view reflection on these dynamics allows us to consider some (re)definitions of space in relation to forms of textualization (even on the maps). Volunteer satisfaction in sports clubs: A multilevel analysis in 10 European countries

Regular voluntary engagement is a basic resource for sports clubs that may also promote social cohesion and active citizenship. The satisfaction of volunteers is an imperative factor in this engagement, and the purpose of this article is to explore individual and organizational determinants of volunteer satisfaction in sports clubs. Theoretically, our study builds on the actor-theory concepts where volunteer satisfaction depends on subjective evaluations of expectations and experiences in a sports club (‘logic of situation’), so that positive evaluations lead to higher satisfaction and, hopefully, retention of volunteers. Dynamics of the Selkov oscillator.

A classical example of a mathematical model for oscillations in a biological system is the Selkov oscillator, which is a simple description of glycolysis. It is a system of two ordinary differential equations which, when expressed in dimensionless variables, depends on two parameters. Surprisingly it appears that no complete rigorous analysis of the dynamics of this model has ever been given.
