Condition Monitoring Technologies for Synthetic Fiber Ropes - a Review
2020
This paper presents a review of different condition monitoring technologies for fiber ropes. Specifically, it presents an overview of the articles and patents on the subject, ranging from the early 70’s up until today with the state of the art. Experimental results are also included and discussed in a conditionmonitoring context, where failuremechanisms and changes in physical parameters give improved insight into the degradation process of fiber ropes. From this review, it is found that automatic width measurement has received surprisingly little attention, and might be a future direction for the development of a continuous condition monitoring system for synthetic fiber ropes.
Fault Diagnostics for Electrically Operated Pitch Systems in Offshore Wind Turbines
2016
This paper investigates the electrically operated pitch systems of offshore wind turbines for online condition monitoring and health assessment. The current signature based fault diagnostics is developed for electrically operated pitch systems using model-based approach. The electrical motor faults are firstly modelled based on modified winding function theory and then, current signature analysis is performed to detect the faults. Further, in order to verify the fault diagnostics capabilities in realistic conditions, the operating profiles are obtained from FAST simulation of offshore wind turbines in various wind conditions. In this way, the applicability of current signature analysis for …
Autoencoders and Data Fusion Based Hybrid Health Indicator for Detecting Bearing and Stator Winding Faults in Electric Motors
2018
The main objective of a condition monitoring programs is to track the health status of critical components of a machine. In this paper, a hybrid health indicator is proposed to monitor the health status of bearings and stator winding of a motor. The proposed method is based on a feature learning from deep autoencoders and data fusion. The features can be learned by autoencoders using individual current and vibration signals, and then learning features are fused to make final health indicators. The experimental data from a permanent magnet synchronous motor is used to validate the proposed method. Promising results in detecting faults and severities of the stator and bearing faults at differ…
A Two-Stage Fault Detection and Classification Scheme for Electrical Pitch Drives in Offshore Wind Farms Using Support Vector Machine
2019
Pitch systems are one of the components with the most frequent failure in wind turbines. This paper presents a two-stage fault detection and classification scheme for electric motor drives in wind turbine pitch systems. The presented approach is suitable for application in offshore wind farms with electric pitch systems driven by induction motors as well as permanent magnet synchronous motors. The adopted strategy utilizes three-phase motor current sensing at the pitch drives for fault detection and only when a fault condition is detected at this stage, features extracted from the current signals are transmitted to a support vector machine classifier located centrally to the wind farm. The …
Vibration signature analysis for monitoring rotor broken bar in double squirrel cage induction motors based on wavelet analysis
2014
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a diagnosis technique, for rotor broken bar in double cage induction motor, based on advanced use of wavelet transform analysis. The proposed technique is experimentally validated. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed approach is based on a combined use of frequency sliding and wavelet transform analysis, to isolate the contribution of the rotor fault components issued from vibration signals in a single frequency band. Findings – The proposed technique is reliable for tracking the rotor fault components over time-frequency domain. The quantitative analysis results based on this technique are the proof of its robustness. Research limit…
An Optimal Monitoring Program for Obtaining Voltage Sag System Indexes
2006
This paper presents a meter placement method for voltage sags monitoring in large transmission systems. An integer programming-based modeling is proposed for choosing the locations of power quality meters. A branch-and-bound-type algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem. A large transmission network is used to validate the method. Stochastic assessment of voltage sags is applied to the test network to obtain simulated monitoring results. Voltage sags system indexes are calculated from monitoring programs designed according to the optimization method. Comparisons with the system indexes obtained from a full monitoring program show the applicability of the method.
Investigation of motor current signature and vibration analysis for diagnosing rotor broken bars in double cage induction motors
2012
This paper investigates the detectability of rotor broken bars in double cage induction motors using current signature and vibration analysis techniques. Double cage induction motors are commonly used for applications where successive loaded starts-up are mandatory. Experimental results were performed under healthy and faulty cases, and for different load conditions using each technique. Rotor broken bars fault detection based on sideband current components may fails due to the presence of inter bar currents that reduce the degree of rotor asymmetry, yielding to a decrease of the magnitude of these spectral components. But inter bar currents produce core vibrations in the axial direction, w…
Experimental study of the evolution of a bar breakage process in a commercial induction machine
2008
This paper analyzes the results of a destructive test developed on a commercial induction motor. The test is designed to reproduce in the laboratory the cage degradation process of an induction motor subjected to a high amount of working cycles, which include heavy startups. During each cycle, the main magnitudes related to the motor condition monitoring are registered, at steady state as well as at transient regime. From these magnitudes, some fault indicators described in the literature are calculated, and so, it is possible to follow their evolution. This analysis assesses the use of such small commercial machines in a test bed as a way of developing a failure that can be used to compare…
An embedded diagnostic system for wheelchairs brushless drives monitoring
2006
The implementation of a microcontroller based monitoring system for the diagnosis of a brushless synchronous motor drives is presented. It finds its primarily interest on motorized wheelchair for disabled people. The embedded system mainly controls all the principal parameters of the electrical drives together with the power supply system. Pre-failure and failure conditions are routinely logged and, depending on the malfunction severity, alarm messages are created and sent to a remote base station by using the GSM wireless network.
Vibration signature analysis for rotor broken bar diagnosis in double cage induction motor drives
2013
The paper investigates the diagnosis of rotor broken bars in field oriented controlled (FOC) double cage induction motor drives, using current and vibration signature analysis techniques. The Impact of the closed loop control system cannot be neglected when the detection of asymmetries in the machine are based on the signature analysis of electrical variables. The proposed diagnosis approach is based on optimized use of wavelet analysis by a pre-processing of phase current or axial/radial vibration signals. Thus, the time evolution of the tracked rotor fault components can be effectively analyzed. This paper shows also the relevance of the fault components computed from axial vibration sign…
