Jet correlations: opportunities and pitfalls

2014

The simplest observables used to probe the interaction of hard partons with a QCD medium in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions measure disappearance, such as the nuclear modification factor R_AA. The information content of such observables is however limited. More differential information is obtained from triggered correlation observables where a trigger condition ensures that a hard event has taken place and the correlation of other objects in the event with the trigger contains information about the nature of parton-medium interaction. By construction, triggered correlation observables are conditional probabilities, i.e. they measure events biased by the trigger condition. The presenc…

A Multiresolution Approach Based on MRF and Bak–Sneppen Models for Image Segmentation

2006

The two major Markov Random Fields (MRF) based algorithms for image segmentation are the Simulated Annealing (SA) and Iterated Conditional Modes (ICM). In practice, compared to the SA, the ICM provides reasonable segmentation and shows robust behavior in most of the cases. However, the ICM strongly depends on the initialization phase. In this paper, we combine Bak-Sneppen model and Markov Random Fields to define a new image segmentation approach. We introduce a multiresolution technique in order to speed up the segmentation process and to improve the restoration process. Image pixels are viewed as lattice species of Bak-Sneppen model. The a-posteriori probability corresponds to a local fitn…

Inferring networks from high-dimensional data with mixed variables

2014

We present two methodologies to deal with high-dimensional data with mixed variables, the strongly decomposable graphical model and the regression-type graphical model. The first model is used to infer conditional independence graphs. The latter model is applied to compute the relative importance or contribution of each predictor to the response variables. Recently, penalized likelihood approaches have also been proposed to estimate graph structures. In a simulation study, we compare the performance of the strongly decomposable graphical model and the graphical lasso in terms of graph recovering. Five different graph structures are used to simulate the data: the banded graph, the cluster gr…

Conditional cash transfers : empowerment resilience and good behaviours in development policies.

2018

Empowerment, resilience and poverty reduction strategies seem to be bound by mutual exclusion. Through poverty reduction and empowerment, people escape poverty and precarization processes by acquiring capabilities that give them both economic and existential stability; in a word, they acquire human resilience. Nevertheless, the relationship between the three concepts and their corresponding practices is characterized by a complementary link that works as a matrix of neoliberal subjectivation processes that involve both men and women on a global level. Said link is a broad and diverse one where other practices and concepts interact: i.e. vulnerability, securitization, care, responsibility an…

Risk Management Optimization for Sovereign Debt Restructuring

2015

Abstract Debt restructuring is one of the policy tools available for resolving sovereign debt crises and, while unorthodox, it is not uncommon. We propose a scenario analysis for debt sustainability and integrate it with scenario optimization for risk management in restructuring sovereign debt. The scenario dynamics of debt-to-GDP ratio are used to define a tail risk measure, termed conditional Debt-at-Risk. A multi-period stochastic programming model minimizes the expected cost of debt financing subject to risk limits. It provides an operational model to handle significant aspects of debt restructuring: it collects all debt issues in a common framework, and can include contingent claims, m…

STAT3 links IL-22 signaling in intestinal epithelial cells to mucosal wound healing.

2009

Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3 is a pleiotropic transcription factor with important functions in cytokine signaling in a variety of tissues. However, the role of STAT3 in the intestinal epithelium is not well understood. We demonstrate that development of colonic inflammation is associated with the induction of STAT3 activity in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). Studies in genetically engineered mice showed that epithelial STAT3 activation in dextran sodium sulfate colitis is dependent on interleukin (IL)-22 rather than IL-6. IL-22 was secreted by colonic CD11c+ cells in response to Toll-like receptor stimulation. Conditional knockout mice with an IEC-specific d…

Volatility Transmission Models: A Survey

2005

This study reviews the literature on volatility transmission in order to determine what we have learnt about the different methodologies applied. In particular, GARCH, regime switching and stochastic volatility models are analysed. In addition, this study covers several concrete aspects such as their scope of application, the overlapping problem, the concept of efficiency and asymmetry modelling. Finally, emerging topics and unanswered questions are identified, serving as an agenda for future research.

Chaotic multiagent system approach for MRF-based image segmentation

2005

In this paper, we propose a new chaotic approach for image segmentation based on multiagent system (MAS). We consider a set of segmentation agents organized around a coordinator agent. Each segmentation agent performs iterated conditional modes (ICM) starting from its own initial image created using a chaotic mapping. The coordinator agent diversifies the initial images using a crossover and a chaotic mutation operators. The efficiency of our chaotic MAS approach is shown through some experimental results.

Output Feedback Control of Discrete Impulsive Switched Systems with State Delays and Missing Measurements

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/283426 Open Access This paper is concerned with the problem of dynamic output feedback (DOF) control for a class of uncertain discrete impulsive switched systems with state delays and missing measurements. The missing measurements are modeled as a binary switch sequence specified by a conditional probability distribution. The problem addressed is to design an output feedback controller such that for all admissible uncertainties, the closed-loop system is exponentially stable in mean square sense. By using the average dwell time approach a…
