Hysteroscopic Evaluation of Endometrial Changes in Breast Cancer Women with or without Hormone Therapies: Results from a Large Multicenter Cohort Stu…

2020

ABSTRACT Study Objective The primary aim of our study was to investigate the incidence of endometrial pathologies, especially endometrial cancer, in women with breast cancer treated with tamoxifen (TAM), aromatase inhibitors (AIs), or receiving no treatment (NT). The secondary aim was to identify, in this cohort, ultrasonographic findings that represent robust indications for hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy, to avoid unnecessary second-level diagnostic procedures. Design Multicenter retrospective cohort study (Clinical Trial ID: NCT03898947). Setting Data were collected from different Italian centers: Regina Elena National Cancer Institute of Rome, Arbor Vitae Centre of Rome, Gaetano Ma…

Stress gradient versus strain gradient constitutive models within elasticity

2014

Abstract A stress gradient elasticity theory is developed which is based on the Eringen method to address nonlocal elasticity by means of differential equations. By suitable thermodynamics arguments (involving the free enthalpy instead of the free internal energy), the restrictions on the related constitutive equations are determined, which include the well-known Eringen stress gradient constitutive equations, as well as the associated (so far uncertain) boundary conditions. The proposed theory exhibits complementary characters with respect to the analogous strain gradient elasticity theory. The associated boundary-value problem is shown to admit a unique solution characterized by a Helling…

Environment, wealth, inequality and the burden of disease in the Accra metropolitan area, Ghana

2005

The study examines environmental problems and adverse impacts on the health of urban households in the Accra metropolitan area, Ghana. Accra is faced with severe inadequacy of urban infrastructure in the face of rapid population growth in the metropolis. More than half of the city's population do not have access to solid waste collection services. Only 39.8% of households have indoor pipe and over 35.0% of households depend on unsanitary public latrines whilst 2.5% do not have access to toilet facilities. Human excrement, garbage and wastewater are usually deposited in surface drains, open spaces and streams in poor neighbourhoods. The resultant poor sanitation has serious health impacts as…

In the judgment S.A.S. versus France the ECtHR held that the French law «prohibiting the concealment of one’s face in public spaces» does not violate the…

Rebalancing β-Amyloid-Induced Decrease of ATP Level by Amorphous Nano/Micro Polyphosphate: Suppression of the Neurotoxic Effect of Amyloid β-Protein …

2017

Morbus Alzheimer neuropathology is characterized by an impaired energy homeostasis of brain tissue. We present an approach towards a potential therapy of Alzheimer disease based on the high-energy polymer inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), which physiologically occurs both in the extracellular and in the intracellular space. Rat pheochromocytoma (PC) 12 cells, as well as rat primary cortical neurons were exposed to the Alzheimer peptide Aβ25-35. They were incubated in vitro with polyphosphate (polyP); ortho-phosphate was used as a control. The polymer remained as Na+ salt; or complexed in a stoichiometric ratio to Ca2+ (Na-polyP[Ca2+]); or was processed as amorphous Ca-polyP microparticles (C…

Malignant transformation of the liver tumour precursor cell line OC/CDE 22 by the four stereoisomeric fjord region 3,4-dihydrodiol 1,2-epoxides of be…

1995

In previous work we established the rat liver oval cell line OC/CDE 22 in order to study in vitro mechanisms of liver cell transformation. We have now exposed OC/CDE 22 cells to each of the four optically active fjord region dihydrodiol epoxides of benzo[c]phenanthrene to investigate their capacity for malignant transformation of liver cells. All four configurational isomers, which are among the most potent carcinogenic metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons tested in murine tumour models, malignantly transform OC/CDE 22 cells at a 2 microM dose level, resulting in a similar colony-forming efficiency in soft agar. Inoculation of the transformed cells into newborn syngeneic rats pro…

The Peroxisome Proliferator WY-14,643 Promotes Hepatocarcinogenesis Caused by Endogenously Generated Oxidative DNA Base Modifications in Repair-Defic…

2007

Abstract Basal levels of endogenously generated oxidative DNA modifications such as 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) are present in apparently all mammalian cells, but their relevance for the generation of spontaneous cancers remains to be established. Both the 8-oxoG levels and the resulting spontaneous mutations are increased in the livers of Csbm/m/Ogg1−/− mice, which are deficient in the repair of 8-oxoG. In order to determine the consequences of these additional oxidative DNA modifications and mutations and thus assess the tumor initiating potency of this type of endogenous DNA damage, we treated Csbm/m/Ogg1−/− mice and repair-proficient controls with the peroxisome proliferator WY-14…
