Preparation, Execution and Experience: A Multivariate Evaluation of ANS-SNS Patterns

1985

Aims to verify with multivariate methods how autonomic-somatic changes (composed by skin conductance, heart rate, pulse amplitude, respiration, blood volume and flexor, frontal and orbicutaris oris EMG-measures) from specific patterns according to event-related demands both during (or after) and before events when contentual and temporal knowledge allowing preparation is varied.

NADPH Oxidase Accounts for Enhanced Superoxide Production and Impaired Endothelium-Dependent Smooth Muscle Relaxation in BKβ1 −/− Mice

2006

Objective— Nitric oxide (NO)-induced vasorelaxation involves activation of large conductance Ca 2+ -activated K + channels (BK). A regulatory BKβ1 subunit confers Ca 2+ , voltage, and NO/cGMP sensitivity to the BK channel. We investigated whether endothelial function and NO/cGMP signaling is affected by a deletion of the β1-subunit. Methods and Results— Vascular superoxide in BKβ1 −/− was measured using the fluorescent dye hydroethidine and lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence. Vascular NO formation was analyzed using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), expression of NADPH oxidase subunits, the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), the soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), as well as the activity a…

Modulatory role of a constitutively active population of α1D-adrenoceptors in conductance arteries

2002

A constitutively active population of α1D-adrenoceptors in iliac and proximal, distal, and small mesenteric rat arteries was studied. The increase in resting tone (IRT) that evidences it was observed only in iliac and proximal mesenteric and was inhibited by prazosin (pIC50 = 9.57), 5-methylurapidil (pIC50 = 7.61), and BMY 7378 (pIC50 = 8.77). Chloroethylchlonidine (100 μmol/l) did not affect IRT, but when added before the other antagonists it blocked their effect. The potency shown by BMY 7378 confirms the α1D-subtype as responsible for IRT. BMY 7378 displayed greater inhibition of adrenergic responses in iliac (pIC50 = 7.57 ± 0.11) and proximal mesenteric arteries (pIC50 = 8.05 ± 0.2) th…

The effects of electrodermal lability and stimulus intensity on skin conductance habituation: A preliminary report

1981

A between-subjects design (N=60) was used to investigate the effects of electrodermal lability and auditory stimulus intensity on habituation of the skin conductance response (SCR). Subjects were subdivided into “labile” and “stabile” groups on the basis of frequency of nonspecific electrodermal responses during the prestimulation period. They received 20 presentations of a 1,000-Hz tone of 15, 35, 55, 75, 95, or 110 dB. There were significant effects of stimulus intensity on all three habituation measures (number of trials to habituation, reciprocal of SCR frequency to the first 10 stimuli, slope of the regression of SCR amplitude on log stimulus number). Additionally, significant effects …

Can galvanic skin conductance be used as an objective indicator of children?s anxiety in the dental setting?

2016

BACKGROUND Assessment of procedural distress is essential at assisting children during invasive dental treatments. This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of galvanic skin response as a measure for assessment of dental anxiety in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS 151 children, aged 5-7 years, participated in this study. Similar dental treatments were rendered to all subjects. At the beginning and end of the session, modified child dental anxiety scale (MCDAS), clinical anxiety rating scale (CARS) and galvanic skin response (GSR) were used to determine children's anxiety. RESULTS GSR was significantly correlated with both MCDAS (rs=0.62, p=0.02) and CARS (rs=0.44, p=0.032). T…

Available Instruments to Assess Pain in Infants

2021

Pain assessment in newborns and infants is challenging for clinicians. Although behavioral and behavioral-physiological scales are validated pain assessment instruments, their use in this age group has significant limitations. In this review, we summarize the methods currently available for assessing pain in neonates and infants. It is possible that these pain detection methods are also useful for assessing the quality of anesthesia and analgosedation in these populations. Further research should be aimed at confirming the usefulness of these tools in infants and identifying additional pain assessment options for clinical practice.

The Orienting Response in Healthy Aging: Novelty P3 Indicates No General Decline but Reduced Efficacy for Fast Stimulation Rates

2017

Automatic orienting to unexpected changes in the environment is a pre-requisite for adaptive behavior. One prominent mechanism of automatic attentional control is the Orienting Response (OR). Despite the fundamental significance of the OR in everyday life, only little is known about how the OR is affected by healthy aging. We tested this question in two age groups (19–38 years and 55–72 years) and measured skin-conductance responses (SCRs) and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to novels (i.e., short environmental sounds presented only once in the experiment; 10% of the trials) compared to standard sounds (600 Hz sinusoidal tones with 200 ms duration; 90% of the trials). Novel and standa…

Stiffness and Reinforcement Effect of electrical Resistance Strain Gauges

2007

:  The increasing use of low-modulus materials, on which the reinforcement effect of the electrical resistance strain gauge is not negligible, has re-opened the research interest into this issue. This study deals with the evaluation of stiffness, and of the strain gauge Young's modulus involved in the estimation of both the global and the local reinforcement effect; the relationship between the strain gauge stiffness and the local reinforcement effect is also analysed. In particular, the experimental technique used to determine the stiffness of some commercial strain gauges is described. The results show that the strain gauge stiffness alone does not permit an accurate evaluation of the loc…

New charge transfer salts of two organic π-donors of the tetrathiafulvalene type with the paramagnetic [Cr(NCS)6]3- anion

2003

cited By 9; International audience; The electrochemical combination of the paramagnetic anion [Cr(NCS)6]3- with the organic π-donors bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (ET) and 4,5-bis(2-hydroxyethylthio) -4′,5′-ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene (DHET-EDTTTF) leads to two new radical cation salts, namely (ET)4 [Cr(NCS 6]·PhCN 1 and (DHET-EDTTTF)2 (NEt4)[Cr(NCS)6] 2. Both have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, magnetic and resistivity measurements. The structure of 1 consists of alternating inorganic layers generated by the anions and organic layers in which the PhCN molecules are inserted; the organic sub-lattice is built up from four different ET units, three of them with a ch…

Electrodermal activity in couple therapy for intimate partner violence

2018

The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which intimate partner violence (IPV) is discussed in couple therapy, what the participants say about it and how, and how the participants’ electrodermal activity (EDA) is activated during these discussions. We studied four couples for whom IPV was an issue in dialog with their therapists. We used thematic analysis and examined the differences in EDA (measured as skin conductance responses, SCRs) between the participants. We found that although IPV was discussed relatively little in therapy, when the topic arose the victims took an active part in the discussion. We also found that the main themes were descriptions of IPV, explanations for I…
