Influence of an elastic stress on the conductivity of passive films

2001

Abstract The electrochemical impedance was measured over a large range of frequency and under straining condition in sodium chloride solution. The Mott-Schottky analysis, performed at high frequency, appears as very useful method to study the effect of an elastic stress on the capacitance values. The results obtained indicate that the semi-conductive properties of passive films formed on a type 316 L stainless steel (SS) are not markedly modified by an elastic stress when applied after ageing. In contrast, passive films formed in the presence of elastic stress have a higher donor and acceptor concentration than those formed in a stress-free state, suggesting that the passive film conductivi…

Structural study, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of the composition NaSnZr(PO4)3

1993

Abstract The structure of the composition NaSnZr(PO4)3 and its evolution with temperature has been studied. The structure presents the space group R 3 c. The refinement of the structure shows that the Sn and Zr atoms are statistically distributed over the same crystallographic position. The unit cell expands in the c direction and contracts in the a direction, remaining the space group R 3 c at temperatures between 26 and 1000°C. The low value of the electrical conductivity at 400°C, 5.729×10−7S/cm and the low density of the pellets limited the use as electrical conductor.

Thermoelectric properties of spark-plasma sintered nanoparticular FeSb2prepared via a solution chemistry approach

2013

Nanoparticular FeSb2 was prepared in solution from cyclopentadienyl iron(ii) dicarbonyl dimer [Fe(Cp(CO)2)]2 and antimony nanoparticles. Spark plasma sintering was used as consolidation method to maintain the particle size. The thermoelectric performance of FeSb2 is limited by its high thermal conductivity. In this work, the thermal conductivity was suppressed by nearly 80% compared to the bulk value by introducing grain boundary scattering of phonons on the nanoscale. The thermoelectric properties of the consolidated FeSb2 emphasize the possibility of altering thermal transport of promising thermoelectric compounds by phonon scattering by engineering the interfaces at the nanoscale.

Anisotropic lattice thermal conductivity in topological semimetal ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te): a first-principles study

2021

Abstract Topological semimetals have attracted significant attentions owing to their potential applications in numerous fields such as low-power electron devices and quantum computation, which are closely related to their thermal transport properties. In this work, the phonon transport properties of topological Dirac nodal-line semimetals ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te) with the PbClF-type structures are systematically studied using the first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. The obtained lattice thermal conductivities show an obvious anisotropy, which is caused by the layer structures of ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te). The room-temperature lattice conductivity of ZrGeTe al…

Low-Temperature Coherent Thermal Conduction in Thin Phononic Crystal Membranes

2016

In recent years, the idea of controlling phonon thermal transport coherently using phononic crystals has been introduced. Here, we extend our previous numerical studies of ballistic low-temperature heat transport in two-dimensional hole-array phononic crystals, and concentrate on the effect of the lattice periodicity. We find that thermal conductance can be either enhanced or reduced by large factors, depending on the the lattice period. Analysis shows that both the density of states and the average group velocity are strongly affected by the periodic structuring. The largest effect for the reduction seen for larger period structures comes from the strong reduction of the group velocities, …

Influence of Phonon dimensionality on Electron Energy Relaxation

2007

We studied experimentally the role of phonon dimensionality on electron-phonon (e-p) interaction in thin copper wires evaporated either on suspended silicon nitride membranes or on bulk substrates, at sub-Kelvin temperatures. The power emitted from electrons to phonons was measured using sensitive normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction thermometers. Membrane thicknesses ranging from 30 nm to 750 nm were used to clearly see the onset of the effects of two-dimensional (2D) phonon system. We observed for the first time that a 2D phonon spectrum clearly changes the temperature dependence and strength of the e-p scattering rate, with the interaction becoming stronger at the …

A Controllable and Highly Propagative Hybrid Surface Plasmon-Phonon Polariton in a CdZnO-based Two-Interface System

2019

The development of new nanophotonic devices requires the understanding and modulation of the propagating surface plasmon and phonon modes arising in plasmonic and polar dielectric materials, respectively. Here we explore the CdZnO alloy as a plasmonic material, with a tunable plasma frequency and reduced losses compared to pure CdO. By means of attenuated total reflectance, we experimentally observe the hybridization of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with the surface phonon polariton (SPhP) in the air-CdZnO-sapphire three-layer system. We show how through the precise control of the CdZnO thickness, the resonance frequencies of the hybrid surface plasmon-phonon polariton (SPPP) are tune…

Optical properties of lithium gallium oxide

2017

Abstract The optical dielectric function tensor of orthorhombic single-crystal LiGaO 2 was determined for polarizations along a , b , and c crystal-axis in the photon energy range from 0.04 eV to 6.5 eV by the generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry. In the far-infrared spectral range from 12.4 meV to 40 meV, the dielectric function was determined from conventional polarized transmittance and polarized reflectance measurements. Lineshape analysis of the dielectric function tensor major components allowed for a determination of the long-wavelength optical phonon characteristics, refractive indices dispersion, and parameters of interband and excitonic optical transitions.

High-Pressure Softening of the Out-of-Plane A2u(Transverse-Optic) Mode of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Induced by Dynamical Buckling

2019

We investigate the highly anisotropic behavior of the in-plane and out-of-plane infrared-active phonons of hexagonal boron nitride by means of infrared reflectivity and absorption measurements under high pressure. Infrared reflectivity spectra at normal incidence on high-quality single crystals show strict fulfillment of selection rules and an unusually long E1u[transverse-optic (TO)] phonon lifetime. Accurate values of the dielectric constants at ambient pressure ϵ0= 6.96, ϵ∞= 4.95, ϵ 0= 3.37, and ϵ∞ = 2.84 have been determined from fits to the reflectivity spectra. The out-of-plane A2u phonon reflectivity band is revealed in measurements on an inclined facet, and absorption measurements a…
