Potere signorile, consenso, dissenso e controllo del territorio nella Sicilia del Trecento: l’esempio dei Chiaromonte
2021
The essay analyses the reasons why the governments created by Chiaromonte family in the cities of eastern Sicily failed, and investigates the cause of their success in the long lasting urban signorie of western Sicily. To create consensus, they had to ensure the supply of grain for the population, to defend the territory from external attacks, and to maintain public order. In addition to military prowess, they used their speaking skills to influence citizens and showed a magnificent lifestyle by building imposing palaces, celebrating sumptuous weddings and funerals, and commissioning works of art. They created spy networks and used violent methods to repress dissent (imprisonment, torture, …
Position paper on laboratory testing for patients on direct oral anticoagulants. A Consensus Document from the SISET, FCSA, SIBioC and SIPMeL
2018
Although direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) do not require dose-adjustment on the basis of laboratory test results, the measurement of their anticoagulant effect is useful in special situations. This position paper issued by the Italian Scientific Societies that are mainly involved in the management of patients on DOAC is aimed at providing guidance to care-givers on which tests should be used and the situations in which testing is useful. The guidance is based on the data from the literature so far available and/or on consensus among experts.
A new position weight correlation coefficient for consensus ranking process without ties
2019
Preference data represent a particular type of ranking data where a group of people gives their preferences over a set of alternatives. The traditional metrics between rankings do not take into account the importance of swapping elements similar among them (element weights) or elements belonging to the top (or to the bottom) of an ordering (position weights). Following the structure of the τx proposed by Emond and Mason and the class of weighted Kemeny–Snell distances, a proper rank correlation coefficient is defined for measuring the correlation among weighted position rankings without ties. The one‐to‐one correspondence between the weighted distance and the rank correlation coefficient ho…
Preparados para el desastre
2019
Optimal gossip algorithm for distributed consensus SVM training in wireless sensor networks
2009
In this paper, we consider the distributed training of a SVM using measurements collected by the nodes of aWireless Sensor Network in order to achieve global consensus with the minimum possible inter-node communications for data exchange. We derive a novel mathematical characterization for the optimal selection of partial information that neighboring sensors should exchange in order to achieve consensus in the network. We provide a selection function which ranks the training vectors in order of importance in the learning process. The amount of information exchange can vary, based on an appropriately chosen threshold value of this selection function, providing a desired trade-off between cla…
S2k guideline for treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus - guided by the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) in cooperation with the European Academ…
2016
Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is a rare inflammatory autoimmune disease with heterogeneous clinical manifestations. To date, no therapeutic agents have been licensed specifically for patients with this disease entity, and topical and systemic drugs are mostly used 'off-label'. The aim of the present guideline was to achieve a broad consensus on treatment strategies for patients with CLE by a European subcommittee, guided by the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) and supported by the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV). In total, 16 European participants were included in this project and agreed on all recommendations. Topical corticosteroids remain the mainstay of trea…
Neuromodulation of chronic headaches: position statement from the European Headache Federation
2013
The medical treatment of patients with chronic primary headache syndromes (chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache, chronic cluster headache, hemicrania continua) is challenging as serious side effects frequently complicate the course of medical treatment and some patients may be even medically intractable. When a definitive lack of responsiveness to conservative treatments is ascertained and medication overuse headache is excluded, neuromodulation options can be considered in selected cases. Here, the various invasive and non-invasive approaches, such as hypothalamic deep brain stimulation, occipital nerve stimulation, stimulation of sphenopalatine ganglion, cervical spinal cord sti…
Distributed Data Clustering via Opinion Dynamics
2015
We provide a distributed method to partition a large set of data in clusters, characterized by small in-group and large out-group distances. We assume a wireless sensors network in which each sensor is given a large set of data and the objective is to provide a way to group the sensors in homogeneous clusters by information type. In previous literature, the desired number of clusters must be specified a priori by the user. In our approach, the clusters are constrained to have centroids with a distance at least ε between them and the number of desired clusters is not specified. Although traditional algorithms fail to solve the problem with this constraint, it can help obtain a better cluste…
Challenging aspects in Consensus protocols for networks
2008
Results on consensus protocols for networks are presented. The basic tools and the main contribution available in the literature are considered, together with some of the related challenging aspects: estimation in networks and how to deal with disturbances is considered. Motivated by applications to sensor, peer-to- peer, and ad hoc networks, many papers have considered the problem of estimation in a consensus fashion. Here, the unknown but bounded (UBB) noise affecting the network is addressed in details. Because of the presence of UBB disturbances convergence to equilibria with all equal components is, in general, not possible. The solution of the epsiv-consensus problem, where the states…
Distributed Consensus on Boolean Information
2009
Abstract In this paper we study the convergence towards consensus on information in a distributed system of agents communicating over a network. The particularity of this study is that the information on which the consensus is seeked is not represented by real numbers, rather by logical values or sets. Whereas the problems of allowing a network of agents to reach a consensus on logical functions of input events, and that of agreeing on set–valued information, have been separately addressed in previous work, in this paper we show that these problems can indeed be attacked in a unified way in the framework of Boolean distributed information systems. Based on a notion of contractivity for Bool…
