In situ conservation strategies of a threatened species: the case of Carex panormitana Guss. in Sicily
2014
Analysis of microbial colonization
2012
CONTENT OF THE BOOK The book takes into consideration archaeological artefacts made out of the most common materials, like stones (both natural and artificial), mosaics, ceramics, glass, metals, wood and textiles. But all these important materials are accompanied by less diffuse artefacts and materials, like clay tablets, goldsmith artefacts, icons, leather and skin objects, bones and ivory, coral and mother of pearl. Each type of artefact and/or material is treated from at least four different points of view: - Composition and processing technology - Alteration and degradation causes and mechanisms - Procedures for conservative intervention - Case study and/or examples of conservative inte…
Ipotesi progettuale per un giardino pubblico “australiano” ai Danisinni, nella città di Palermo
2013
It is presented a project aimed at achieving a public garden theme “Australia” to Danisinni, in Palermo. The idea is based mainly on the consideration that the image of Palermo, resulting from the urban climate and flora in its main public spaces and within private gardens; on the view that in Palermo has a garden to English G. B. F. Basile, the first and last example of a public garden designed as such from its inception; last but not least, the propulsive action of the Botanical garden, behind the idea of conceiving an urban design, structured by a system of theme parks, in order to affirm the cosmopolitan character of Palermo. The project of urban Danisinni depression shows an area, cove…

Microclimate and microbial monitoring, a case study: the Oratorio dei Falegnami in Palermo
2016
The following study has been carried out during the restoration work of the polymateric sculpture “Immacolata Concezione” located inside the chapel of the Oratorio dei Falegnami in Palermo. The manufact, a typical example of Trapanese (Sicily) craftsmanship (18th century) made by pieces of fabric, soaked in animal glue, applied to an inner structure, finished with plaster and painted. The main damages were paint losses and flaking all over the surface on textile backing, due to the indoor microclimatic conditions. After the conservative restoration, in order to prevent such damages, the microclimate monitoring was performed in two steps. First, the presence of temporal and spatial gradients…
Flora e vegetazione della Riserva Naturale Orientata "Laghetti di Marinello" (Sicilia nord-orientale)
2011
Flora and vegetation of Natural Reserve “Laghetti di Marinello” (North-Eastern Sicily) - Flora and vegetation of the Natural Reserve “Laghetti di Marinello” (Patti, NE Sicily) are examined. in this area extending 414 hectares, different environmental aspects enabled the emergence of various types of vegetation. The plant-communities are represented by halophilous communities (Juncetea maritimi), riverine hygrophilous communities (Phragmito-Magnocaricetea), psammophilous coenoses (Ammophiletea, Cakiletea maritimae), chasmophytic coenoses (Asplenietea trichomanis), woody and nanophanerophytic coenoses (Quercetea ilicis), and steppic prairies (Lygeo-Stipetea). The floristic analysis testifies …
14.9 ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES
2012
An analytical technique is a method that is used to determine the value of a certain characteristic of the material, for example the amount of a chemical compound or the concentration of chemical elements. There is a wide variety of techniques used for analysis, from a simple analytical balance to very advanced techniques using highly specialized instrumentations. As an example, the most common techniques used in analytical chemistry are listed in Figure 14.1. The analytical techniques are characterized by their invasiveness, type of information supplied, physical state of the sample, being portable or not, resolution, how much sample it needs, expression of the result, what materials can b…
Contribution to the knowledge of Tunisian amphibians: notes on distribution, habitat features and breeding phenology
2009
In order to improve the knowledge on amphibian fauna in Tunisia, about 300 water bodies belonging to different habitat typologies were sampled during the period 2004-2008. At the sites where amphibians were observed, we recorded the UTM coordinates, the altitude, and the following environmental features: habitat typology, hydroperiod, electric conductivity, temperature, water turbidity, and macrophyte coverage. The presence of the seven species currently known with certainty for Tunisia has been confirmed: Pleurodeles nebulosus, Discoglossus pictus, Bufo bufo, B. mauritanicus, B. boulengeri, Hyla meridionalis and Pelophylax saharicus. Conversely, no evidence on the occurrence of Salamandra …
Using phylogeography to promote dormouse conservation: the case of Muscardinus avellanarius (Rodentia, Gliridae)
2012
this study describes the phylogeographic history of the common dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius rodent strictly protected in europe (habitat directive, annex iv; Bern convention, annex iii). We analyzed the genetics of 120 common dormice across the species’ range, using sequences data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (704 pb). the dataset obtained was analyzed using different phylogenetic reconstructions as well as other methods adapted to phylogeography. A complex phylogeographic pattern has been retrieved from the mitochondrial dnA gene, with the presence of two highly divergent lineages. these two lineages are themselves subdivided into five sublineages, which should be regarde…
The Status of Coastal Benthic Ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea: Evidence From Ecological Indicators
2020
The Mediterranean Sea is subject to multiple human pressures increasingly threatening its unique biodiversity. Spatially explicit information on the ecological status of marine ecosystems is therefore key to an effective maritime spatial planning and management, and to help the achievement of environmental targets. Here, we summarized scientific data on the ecological status of a selection of marine ecosystems based on a set of ecological indicators in more than 700 sites of the Mediterranean Sea. For Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds, rocky intertidal fringe, and coastal soft bottoms, more than 70% of investigated sites exhibited good to high ecological conditions. In contrast, about two-th…
