Casimir-Polder force density between an atom and a conducting wall

2007

In this paper we calculate the Casimir-Polder force density (force per unit area acting on the elements of the surface) on a metallic plate placed in front of a neutral atom. To obtain the force density we use the quantum operator associated to the electromagnetic stress tensor. We explicitly show that the integral of this force density over the plate reproduces the total force acting on the plate. This result shows that, although the force is obtained as a sum of surface element-atom contributions, the stress-tensor method includes also nonadditive components of Casimir-Polder forces in the evaluation of the force acting on a macroscopic object.

Conservative treatment of initial breast cancer

1988

The results of conservative surgical techniques (quadrantectomy or tumorectomy), axillary dissection and radiotherapy in 58 patients with initial breast cancer (Tt No, Mo) treated between June 1979 and December 1986 are reported. The disease-free survival rates after 5 and 8 years were 84% and 76% respectively. Four cases developed local recurrences (6.9%); 2 cases developed distant metastases involving lung and bone, and 1 case developed bone metastases without local recurrence. Two patients with local recurrence underwent radical life-saving mastectomy and are now free from disease.

Retarding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Progression: A Practical Nutritional Approach for Non-Dialysis CKD

2016

This is a case report on a patient with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) in whom several nutritional issues are briefly discussed from a practical point of view. The article is accompanied by an editorial published in this Journal in relation to the 2nd International Conference of the European Renal Nutrition working group at ERA-EDTA—“Retarding CKD progression: readily available through comprehensive nutritional management?”— and focuses on several practical topics associated with the nutritional approach for the conservative treatment of non-dialysis CKD. The article is divided into 3 sections—basic nutritional assessment, nutritional targets, and nutritional follow-up in non-di…

The aim of this work is to study the journalistic treatment that the protest agains…

The Conservatives’ representation of socialism and liberalism during PMQs since the 1990s

2022

The Conservatives’ representation of socialism and liberalism during PMQs since the 90s.Socialism and liberalism are ideologies which, in Michael Freeden’s terms “are not an exact representation of an ideational reality, but a symbolic reconstruction of it”. Drawing on this premise this paper seeks to analyse how and to what end the Conservatives have made a symbol out of (Labour’s) socialism and (the Conservatives’) liberalism through parliamentary discourse (esp. during PMQs). This process of symbolization through specific rhetoric means results in a clear-cut ideological divide between parties offering an (over)simplified view of the political world. However, symbols are fluid and can ev…

How Populist Was David Cameron?

2016

The ‘rhetorical populism’ of the former prime minister's big society agenda may have waxed and waned, says Agnes Alexandre-Collier. But Cameron was an innovator of party management and governing practices whose focus on connecting with ‘the people’ transformed his party – but also supplied the means of his own downfall.
