Intrinsic bioremediation potential of a chronically polluted marine coastal area.
2015
A microbiological survey of the Priolo Bay (eastern coast of Sicily, Ionian Sea), a chronically polluted marine coastal area, was carried out in order to discern its intrinsic bioremediation potential. Microbiological analysis, 16S rDNA-based DGGE fingerprinting and PLFAs analysis were performed on seawater and sediment samples from six stations on two transects. Higher diversity and variability among stations was detected by DGGE in sediment than in water samples although seawater revealed higher diversity of culturable hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The most polluted sediment hosted higher total bacterial diversity and higher abundance and diversity of culturable HC degraders. Alkane- an…
Il consorzio del vino Marsala. Una lettura economico-aziendale della sua storia, evoluzione, declino e possibili scenari futuri.
2020
Since the 1940s, the first initiatives take places to create the Marsala wine consortium. In 1963, the constitution of the consortium actually occurs, making Marsala the only Italian wine whose rules of operation are derived from a state law. For almost 50 years the Consortium was a point of reference for producers, amd actively contributed to the qualitative development of the image of Marsala. However, in 2016, after a glorious hustory, the Marsala Consortium no longer appears in the official ministerial list of consortia of Italiam DOC wines. The main reasons for this, illustrated in the paper, can be traced to the drastic reduction of the adherents to the consortium, to the contrasts th…
Performance organizzativa e carichi di lavoro nello studio sui Consorzi Regionali di Bonifica
2022
The objective of our research was to verify, through an empirical survey, the measuring of the relationship between workload and performance within complex public organizations. Starting from the reference literature the research approach adopted was of a mixed type characterized by an exploratory design and the analysis of a case study. #e data collection was carried out through documentary sources and some structured interviews administered to the management and the various sector heads of reclamation consortium studied. Based on the interviews carried out, a relationship between the measurement of the workload and the performance within the institution examined is inferred, because there…
Assessing the quality of studies in meta-research: Review/guidelines on the most important quality assessment tools
2020
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses pool data from individual studies to generate a higher level of evidence to be evaluated by guidelines. These reviews ultimately guide clinicians and stakeholders in health-related decisions. However, the informativeness and quality of evidence synthesis inherently depend on the quality of what has been pooled into meta-research projects. Moreover, beyond the quality of included individual studies, only a methodologically correct process, in relation to systematic reviews and meta-analyses themselves, can produce a reliable and valid evidence synthesis. Hence, quality of meta-research projects also affects evidence synthesis reliability. In this overview…
Prokaryotic symbiotic consortia and the origin of nucleated cells: A critical review of Lynn Margulis hypothesis.
2021
The publication in the late 1960s of Lynn Margulis endosymbiotic proposal is a scientific milestone that brought to the fore of evolutionary discussions the issue of the origin of nucleated cells. Although it is true that the times were ripe, the timely publication of Lynn Margulis' original paper was the product of an intellectually bold 29-years old scientist, who based on the critical analysis of the available scientific information produced an all-encompassing, sophisticated narrative scheme on the origin of eukaryotic cells as a result of the evolution of prokaryotic consortia and, in bold intellectual stroke, put it all in the context of planetary evolution. A critical historical reas…
OGC-to-W3C Services: A Wrapper-Based Solution for Geospatial Metadata Exchange
2018
When trying to compose services that are developed according to different standards, interoperability issues arise that are often faced by developing ad-hoc solutions. A typical example is represented by the composition of W3C and OGC services, which were developed more or less concurrently by independent organizations. In such a context, developing a wrapper that abstracts as much as possible the inner details and logic of a wrapped service well embraces the low-coupled nature of the general Service Oriented Computing paradigm. This paper focuses on the proper management of geospatial metadata into a W3C-based environment and is based on the development of a wrapper that exposes OGC functi…

French Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are, for 89% of the respondents to the survey, now having their own open repository, or declaring to be in the implementation phase (compared to 82% in 2017 and only 62% in 2014). It can therefore be considered that almost all HEIs now offer a green open access repository or signalling solution to their researchers. The « still in progress » or suspended projects are rather related to the current recomposition of the Higher Education landscape. The most obvious obstacles to the latest implementations remain both the low involvement of researchers in the project and the human resources allocated. There is a slight but real increase in the rate of i…
Identification and quantification of microbial populations in activated sludge and anaerobic digestion processes
2014
Eight different phenotypes were studied in an activated sludge process (AeR) and anaerobic digester AnD) in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant by means of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and automated FISH quantification software. The phenotypes were ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAO), glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO), sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), methanotrophic bacteria and methanogenic archaea. Some findings were unexpected: (a) Presence of PAO, GAO and denitrifiers in the AeR possibly due to unexpected environmental conditions caused by oxygen deficiencies or its ability to survive …
