Project Management Competencies for Master Students: Curriculum Development in Two Romanian Universities

2016

The Bologna Process has as one of its main pillars the link between academic curricula and labour market requirements. This process has built a space for dialogue and cooperation which reaches far beyondEurope, where the basic values of the European society – freedom of expression and research, free movements of academics and students, students active participation to learning and tolerance – have been put at the forefront of education. Since 1999, Romanian universities have tried to adjust their curricula and academic offers for study programs to the requirements of the labour market, sometimes with some reluctance from the various partners involved in this process. As the field of Project…

Issues and Future Developments of Infrared Thermography in Sports Science

2016

Although currently infrared thermography has a great number of applications in sports science, there are a number of different aspects that need to be investigated in order to improve the technique, the methodology, the analysis and to increase its application areas. In this chapter, we discuss the issues with and possible developments in infrared thermography in sport science, in order to facilitate future R&D.

Simplified flexural response of steel-fiber reinforced concrete beams

2008

In the present paper, an analytical model is proposed that is able to determine the flexural response of supported beams under four-point bending tests. Cases of normal strength reinforced concrete beams with longitudinal bars in the presence of reinforcing hooked steel fibers and transverse stirrups are considered. A simplified analytical model is presented that is able to calculate the load-deflection curves and the maximum and ultimate deflections occurring in the case of shear or flexure failures. In the case of shear failure, the maximum shear strength of the beams is evaluated by using a recent analytical expression proposed by the author able to account for the shear-to-moment intera…

Innovative Siloxane Coating Formulations: The Experimental Assessment of the Durability of Colour

2011

Maintenance programming of civil and industrial buildings is a relevant problem, especially in a global situation where natural resources are increasingly limited. Accurately knowing the durability of building products and components, essential for a sustainable use of resources, becomes more and more important after the recent 18 January 2011 resolution of the European Parliament, which introduced the seventh requirement on construction products, specifically regarding the sustainability and therefore the durability of such. This study concerns the evaluation of the durability of some innovative coatings based on acrylic-siloxane resins containing several pigments, used for building extern…

Tinker, Tailor…: Creativity in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching

2017

The word creativity has recently won great popularity in numerous contexts, showing both positive (“creative writing”) and negative (“creative accounting”) connotations. The concept itself has many meanings as it may refer to the end product of one’s activity, the cognitive processes involved in the creative act, the personality of a creative person, the development of creativity across the life span, and also the factors that either stimulate or inhibit the process of creation (Łukasik, 2015; Simonton, 2000). There is also a distinction between exceptional creativity, manifesting itself in important works that are significant for a given society, and everyday creativity, which can be obser…

New solutions for prefabricated secondary substations in the view of sustainability

2016

The secondary substations will assume an important role as “smart nodes” of the smart grid. So in few years there will be a widespread dissemination on the territory of this apparatus. Consequently, great care have to be taken not only on safety issues, but also on the constructive methodology, in order to determine low environmental impact and decommissioning cost. This paper focuses on innovative solutions for the realization of prefabricated secondary substations, in the direction of sustainability. Innovative layout and enclosure topologies have been here taken into account. In particular, by considering that the substation concrete box is, at the same time, uneconomical and with strong…

Occupational emerging risks affecting international virtual project Team Results

2017

The expansion of internet access, high-speed connection services, collaborative work platforms and tools, allowed employees to interact virtually offering companies the possibility to develop projects around the world, reducing operational costs and gain competitive advantage. Realizing the advantages and disadvantages of developing a project team in an international virtual work environment, requires adopting specific strategies to construct an effective team and ensure the project success. One of the most important disadvantages that we identified is that the new work environment brings new risks for both team members and managers. So, it becomes mandatory to identify and analyze the occu…

An extension of the fractional model for construction of asphalt binder master curve

2015

Knowledge and prediction of viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binder is of great interest in order to design asphalt mixtures for civil construction of road and airports with good performances. The capability of a fractional model – requiring a very limited number of parameters – to describe and predict the linear viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binder subjected to sinusoidal oscillations is investigated. Experimental data of complex modulus, |G*|, and phase angle, δ, are used to validate the proposed constitutive model. Based on the proposed extension of a fractional model, complex modulus isotherms for a range of frequencies can be created simply starting from isochronals at frequency v…

Lean design improves both health-care facilities and processes: a literature review

2014

This article presents a literature review of the challenges and possibilities for Lean design in modern health-care facilities. Many of today's health-care facilities are in dire need of renovation since limited financial resources among health-care demand improved work process efficiency, safety and employee well-being. Lean philosophy has been successfully implemented into hospitals with up-and-running hospital processes, but has not been thoroughly tested as a design methodology. The principles of Lean do not contradict with user-centric, participatory or ergonomic design approaches and thus the possibilities of using Lean as a complementary design methodology to the aforementioned appro…

Warehouse threats and loss prevention management in case of fire

2016

Abstract Warehouses play an important role when it comes to the reception, delivery and storage of various types of goods. Due to the complex scenarios that may occur, as well as the heterogeneous nature of goods, warehouses bear a higher risk of accidents. Regardless if we’re taking about removing hassle or standardizing operations we speak the same language: insuring efficiency and increased efficiency leads to smart cost maintenances. In the article hear by we will observe the behavior of different warehouse materials in the case of trigger fired. Starting from the results obtained during the low scale tests and completing the premises with the large scale experiment (warehouse scale), w…
