Catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction of municipal sludge assisted by formic acid for the production of next-generation fuels

Abstract Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of municipal sludge (MS) was studied at 325 °C and 30 min at 10 and 30% w/w concentration of MS using formic acid (FA) as a green liquid hydrogen donor both in the absence and in the presence of heterogeneous catalysts. Pellets of commercial NiMo/Al2O3, CoMo/Al2O3 and felt of activated carbon ACF 1600 were used as catalysts. The addition of FA at high MS loading allowed to increase the yields in BC from 41 to 62% and its H/C ratio from 1.80 to 2.01 leading to energy recovery (ER) higher than 100%.When heterogeneous catalysts were used together with FA, a marked improvement of BC yields and quality was obtained at 10% MS loading. On the shell structure and geometry of monovalent metal clusters

The Huckel model is used to study the electronic structure of monovalent metal clusters. In an fcc cluster the Huckel model gives an estimate to the electronic structure of a free electron cluster. It is shown that the surface faceting of the fcc cluster can destroy the electronic shell structure already when the cluster has about 100 electrons. In the Huckel model the icosahedral structure has smaller total energy than the fcc structures, from which the Wulff construction has the smallest energy already when the cluster has 600 atoms.

Graphic proposal for the great hall of the Palace of the Counts of Oliva

[EN] The now-demolished Palace of the Counts of Oliva, in the province of Valencia (Spain), was an outstanding example of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture and art. Its great hall was particularly impressive, with rich, complex decoration that constituted a cultural milestone linked recently to the ‘Germanías’, or Brotherhoods. Through research conducted in image and document collections, a graphic reproduction of the room has been produced, with special emphasis on its frieze. The procedures and techniques used in this process are examined here, before a final contemplation of the possible uses for these results.

Struggling for a professional identity: Two newly qualified language teachers' identity narratives during the first years at work

Abstract Although teachers' first years in the profession are a widely studied field, the factors that would help to understand the difficulty or the ease with which individuals enter full time teaching and construct their professional identity are still little studied. This narrative study approaches the topic by comparing two newly qualified teachers' professional identity formation. The participants' stories display two different experience narratives: a painful and an easy beginning. The findings show the importance of the teachers' initial identities and the storytelling process to their professional identity formation. The study is part of a longitudinal research project in Finland.

Model of a Constructive Fuctional Optimization of the Cardan Cross

This paper aims to establish an optimization model using the Ansys program, and taking into account the specific constraints depending on the functional role of the specific area. We present certain calculation parameters applied to the cardanic transmission of the Dacia, this cardanic transmission being considered an optimization model. The entire cardanic transmission was analyzed, resulting that the cardan crosses are parts which are strained the most, and that is why it will be here that the optimization will be focused, in terms of minimizing the Von Mises stress.

Textureless macula swelling detection with multiple retinal fundus images

Retinal fundus images acquired with nonmydriatic digital fundus cameras are versatile tools for the diagnosis of various retinal diseases. Because of the ease of use of newer camera models and their relatively low cost, these cameras can be employed by operators with limited training for telemedicine or point-of-care (PoC) applications. We propose a novel technique that uses uncalibrated multiple-view fundus images to analyze the swelling of the macula. Cycling behavior remains a key issue for explaining several traffic causalities occurring every day. However, recent studies have shown how the assessment of the own safety-related behaviors on the road may substantially differ from how third parties assess them.
