Gamma activity and geochemical features of building materials: estimation of gamma dose rate and indoor radon levels in Sicily.

A high-purity germanium detector has been used to measure the abundance of radium (Ra), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) in building materials used in Sicilian dwellings. The measurements were performed to evaluate which material was suitable for the construction of an enclosure, which would have a low background emission. The materials examined in this work showed concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K dramatically variable depending on the lithologies, particularly in the case of blocks, sands and aggregates commonly used in building materials in Sicily. Litwa położona jest na gęsto zalesionych terenach Europy Północno-Wschodniej, stąd bogactwo budownictwa drewnianego w tym kraju. Wśród budynków drewnianych wyróżniają się obiekty sakralne, o dużej wartości historycznej, różnorodnej formie i rozmiarach, złożonych projektach i wieloetapowej realizacji. Najstarsze kościoły drewniane zaczęto budować na Litwie w XIII wieku. Among the wooden structures we can enumerate the religious buildings, rich of historic values, presenting different forms and sizes and also a complex design and stratified construction phases. Lexical classes and constructions: an analysis of the constructional realization of entity-specific change-of-state English verbs

This study analyzes a so far neglected part of the constructional behavior of Levin's (1993) entity-specific change-of-state verbs. More specifically, we discuss the integration of verbs from this lexical class into the intransitive-resultative construction. We base our analysis on the Lexical Constructional Model or LCM (Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal 2008, 2011; Mairal and Ruiz de Mendoza 2009; Ruiz de Mendoza 2013). It will be shown that the internal and external constraints postulated by the LCM constitute useful explanatory and analytical tools for the fusion processes between these verbs and the intransitive-resultative construction. In this paper, an experimental study referring to the flexural behavior of full-scale external beam-column joints externally strengthened with steel angles and strips and subjected to cyclic reversal loading is presented. One control specimen and five other specimens having the same characteristics as the control specimen but strengthened with steel angles and strips along beams and columns, and characterized by different configurations of strengthening in the critical regions, were tested.
