Combined surgical and prosthetic approach for rehabilitation of frontonasal defect using custom made titanium implant: a case report
2011
Cranial vault deformities as a sequelae to trauma may be as high as 70%. The basic indications for cranioplasty are improvement of disfigured aesthetics and to provide protection to the intra-cranial contents. The possibility of producing custom-made implants opened a new era in the reconstructive surgery of the craniofacial deformities. The outcome of craniofacial bone reconstruction is thought to be dependent on surgical skills, quality of adjacent soft tissues, size and location of the bone defect and choice of repair method. The use of autologous bone for craniofacial reconstruction may be restricted due to limited amounts of donor bone. Combined surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation o…
The use of triamcinolone combined with surgery in major ear keloid treatment: a personal two stages approach
2015
Background: Keloid is a fibroproliferative disorder characterized by an abnormal deposition of collagen within a wound. Despite an increased understanding of wound healing and collagen metabolism, the exact cause, the clinical behavior, and gold standard of treatment for keloids remain an enigma. There is no one right way of treatment, the results are variable, and the management of ear keloids can be difficult and frustrating both for patients and physicians. Traditional techniques include intralesional steroids, topical applications of silicone, vitamins, and segmental excision by lasers or surgery. The purposes of this article are to review the literature concerning the current therapies…
Endoscopic treatment of intraluminal ureteral suture with holmium laser
2021
Although reconstructive surgery is the most accepted treatment for ureteral injury, there are reports of cases where endourologic treatment led to correct resolution of the problem. We present the case of a female patient aged 72-year-old who was previously underwent sacralcolpopexy because of anterior vaginal compartment prolapse. The patient underwent surgery to remove the mesh, due to the pain she had had since it was placed. A mid-line laparotomy was performed removing completely the mesh. At 48 hours after intervention, the patient started feeling an intense pain in the left renal fossa that was not relieved with anti-inflammatories and morphic drugs. In the diagnostic ureteroscopy, it…
The effects of optimizing blood inflow in the pedicle on perforator flap survival: A pilot study in a rat model
2020
Background Perforator flaps have led to a revolution in reconstructive surgery by reducing donor site morbidity. However, many surgeons have witnessed partial flap necrosis. Experimental methods to increase inflow have relied on adding a separate pedicle to the flap. The aim of our study was to experimentally determine whether increasing blood flow in the perforator pedicle itself could benefit flap survival. Methods In 30 male Lewis rats, an extended posterior thigh perforator flap was elevated and the pedicle was dissected to its origin from the femoral vessels. The rats were assigned to three groups: control (group I), acute inflow (group II) and arterial preconditioning (group III) dep…
Complex reconstructive surgery following removal of extra-intracranial meningiomas, including the use of autologous fibrin glue and a pedicled muscle…
2014
Abstract Background Skull reconstructive surgery is critical to prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistulas and infections, and to ensure good aesthetic results in meningiomas surgery. Methods A 65-year-old woman was surgically treated for a bilateral parasagittal meningioma with complete superior sagittal sinus (SSS) involvement, and an intra-extracranial extension, determining a significant cranial defect at the vertex. A Simpson I resection was achieved. Postoperatively a considerable and not conservatively repairable CSF leak was detected. Surgical revision of the wound with repair of the fistula and complex reconstructive operation was performed including a combination of techniques and…
Toward more realistic viscosity measurements of tyre rubber–bitumen blends
2014
AbstractThe measurement of rheological properties of the tyre rubber bitumen blends is often challenging due to presence of suspended tyre rubber’s crumbs. Furthermore, the phase separation during the course of measurements makes the viscosity of these non-homogeneous blends difficult to ascertain. In this study, a new dual helical impeller was designed and manufactured to be used with a rotational viscometer in order to have a real-time control of the viscosity while performing a laboratory mixing of the blends. Layer based manufacturing techniques showed to be a convenient method to produce complex shaped impeller prototypes before manufacturing the more expensive stainless steel assembly…
Optimisation of liquid rubber modified bitumen for road pavements and roofing applications
2020
Abstract Polymer Modified Bitumens (PMBs) are largely used for pavement and roofing membranes applications with Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Block copolymer (SBS) playing a major role in both markets despite its constantly increasing price due to the rising demand for quality bitumen modifiers. On the other hand, there is an increasing trend of recycling end of life tyres generating Recycled Tyre Rubber (RTR) at affordable price. This investigation aims at engineering a modified bitumen with a combination of Liquid Rubber (LR), a homogeneous blend of 50–70% RTR pre-processed in combination with heavy oils, and a wax denominated Ethylene Bis Stearamide (EBS). In the first phase, the effect of L…

Artificial Ground Motions and Nonlinear Response of RC Structures
2020
The selection of seismic inputs for nonlinear dynamic analysis is widely debated, mainly focusing on the advantages and disadvantages provided by the choice of natural, simulated, or artificial records. This work proves the differences in the structural behavior of RC buildings when using accelerograms with different levels of stationarity. Initially, nonlinear response under three sets of accelerograms equivalent in terms of pseudo acceleration spectrum is evaluated and compared. Then, the results of incremental dynamic analyses are compared by the statistical point of view considering different levels of irregularity for the reference structure.
