Selective Actuation and Tomographic Imaging of Swarming Magnetite Nanoparticles

2021

International audience; Micro- and nanomotors have seen substantial progress in recent years for biomedical applications. However, three grand challenges remain: (i) high velocities to overcome the blood flow, (ii) spatially selective control to enable complex navigation, and (iii) integration of a medical, tomographic real-time imaging method to acquire feedback information. Here, we report the combination of active magnetic matter and a medical imaging technique, namely magnetic particle imaging (MPI), which addresses these needs. We synthesize ∼200 nm magnetic nanoparticles and observe a macroscopic, collective effect in a homogeneous magnetic field with a rotating field vector. The nano…

Compressive imaging in scattering media.

2015

One challenge that has long held the attention of scientists is that of clearly seeing objects hidden by turbid media, as smoke, fog or biological tissue, which has major implications in fields such as remote sensing or early diagnosis of diseases. Here, we combine structured incoherent illumination and bucket detection for imaging an absorbing object completely embedded in a scattering medium. A sequence of low-intensity microstructured light patterns is launched onto the object, whose image is accurately reconstructed through the light fluctuations measured by a single-pixel detector. Our technique is noninvasive, does not require coherent sources, raster scanning nor time-gated detection…

Functional design of power-split CVTs: An uncoupled hierarchical optimized model

2017

Abstract This paper provides a new model for the preliminary design of compound power-split CVTs. Unlike the existing models, the presented method allows the engineers to prioritize functionality and efficiency of the transmission, while delaying the choice of the involved gear sets’ layout as long as possible. The design approach follows a specific priority order, and each step deals with one particular issue, without mutual interference. A smart design-chart eases the assessment and the comparison of the only eligible alternatives, and eventually leads to a final feasible constructive scheme, which can be an excellent concept for further optimization and implementation. Moreover, the mode…

The overall classification of residential buildings: Possible role of tourist EU Ecolabel award scheme

2012

Abstract The debate on the environmental performance of buildings and their classification is continuously rising and deeply involves all actors of the sector, from researchers to technicians and from owners to real estate managers. In the field, the EU has created a panel that is currently working on defining the criteria for attributing an Ecolabel award to a building. However, despite the enormous efforts made by administrative and academic institutions, a suitable and widely available scheme for operators to assess the environmental performance of a building is far from being established. To help provide a solution to the problem, the possibility of adopting the EU Ecolabel scheme estab…

Toward a European Eco-label brand for residential buildings: Holistic or by-components approaches?

2011

The Eco-label scheme is becoming ever more important in the environmental certification of products and services, especially in light of the recent ambitious aim of containing greenhouse emissions and improving the efficiency of utilizing energy sources. A recently-introduced hypothesis concerns the European Eco-label scheme relating to buildings, in the awareness that the construction industry is of primary importance to the whole economic and social life of states. This scheme should adopt an integrated approach to environmental problems and include construction, day-to-day management, and the possible disposal of building materials, throughout the life cycle of the building. In addition,…

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Authentication Scheme

2015

Attribute-based authentication (ABA) is an approach to authenticate users by their attributes, so that users can get authenticated anonymously and their privacy can be protected. In ABA schemes, required attributes are represented by attribute trees, which can be combined with signature schemes to construct ABA schemes. Most attribute trees are built from top to down and can not change with attribute requirement changes. In this paper, we propose an ABA scheme based on down-to-top built attribute trees or dynamic attribute trees, which can change when attribute requirements change. Therefore, the proposed dynamic ABA scheme is more efficient in a dynamic environment by avoiding regenerating…

The Multilevel Model in the Computer-Generated Appraisal: A Case in Palermo

2017

The construction of a mass appraisal model requires the preliminary study of the real estate market, the sampling of sold properties, the development of a forecasting model and the verification of the appraisal results. They are generally computerised methods, that work with geo-referenced data. This experimental work has proceeded to build a mass appraisal model, collecting a data sample of sales of apartments in the city of Palermo, in the five years 2008–2012, using a multivariate statistical model (multilevel), testing the results and providing the operating applications in a scheme of online real estate valuations.

Interactive Learning Environments (ILEs) as Effective Tools for Teaching Social Sciences

2016

Schoolteachers could enhance learning in social science courses by using teaching tools that favour a methodological approach focused on the topics' basic structure rather than on facts. An innovative system dynamics social-based ILE built with a social constructivist approach is presented here. The pedagogical futures of this ILE are then analysed. The effective impact of different instructional approaches inspired by social-based ILEs on student learning outcomes is also discussed. The ILE and the related inquiry-based instructional approach seem to help students understand fundamental concepts more easily, thus making the topic more comprehensible and helping students place the social fa…

Round Robin Testing initiative for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement

2011

An international Round Robin Testing (RRT) programm e on FRP reinforcement was conducted within the framework of the Marie Curie R esearch Training Network, EN- CORE, and with the support of Task Group 9.3 of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib). Eleven laboratories and six manufacturers and suppliers participated in this exercise. As part of this exte nsive experimental endeavour, one or more of the following tests were performed by the partic ipating laboratories: 1) tensile tests on FRP bars and strips; 2) tensile tests on FRP lamina tes; 3) double bond shear tests on FRP laminates (Externally Bonded Reinforcement, EBR) an d FRP bars/strip (Near Surface Mounted rein…
