Biomechanical comparison between the modified rolling-hitch and the modified finger-trap suture techniques
2016
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize the biomechanical effect of two grasping suture techniques used during ligament reconstruction: the modified rolling-hitch (MRH) and the modified finger-trap (MFT). Methods: Flexor profundus tendons were harvested from fresh pig hind-leg trotters. Each specimen was mounted on an electro-mechanic universal testing machine (Instron 3367). In half of all tendons (15 specimens), the suture was passed around the tendon following the MRH knot (Group 1). In the remaining half of all tendons (15 specimens), the suture was passed over a distance of 30 mm according to the MFT suture technique (Group 2). As per standard intra-operative technique, …
Spontaneous extrusion of male genital pearling
2021
Pearling is a practice of inserting small beads beneath the skin of the genitalia. Patients generally underwent this practice believing that this would have made their penis bigger and able to better satisfy their partners during intercourse. Pearling can cause complications. We report a case of spontaneous extrusion of genital pearling exiting in a granuloma of the inner face of the foreskin.
Writing the history of a challenge
2017
Fuzzy Integral Imaging Camera Calibration for Real Scale 3D Reconstructions
2014
In this paper, we present a quantitative analysis of the error in the reconstruction of a 3D scene which has been captured with Synthetic Aperture Integral Imaging system. The 3D information is obtained from 2D images for which the camera parameters are unknown. The model used for calibrating the Integral Imaging camera setup is based on fuzzy systems. These systems provide the opportunity for modeling of conditions which are inherently imprecisely defined. We demonstrate that the error in the 3D reconstruction not only depends on the number of cameras, but also to their relative positions. Our model is applied to a set of images captured experimentally from a real object. A true-color real…
Commissioning of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer with cosmic rays
2010
The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has collected several hundred million cosmic ray events during 2008 and 2009. These data were used to commission the Muon Spectrometer and to study the performance of the trigger and tracking chambers, their alignment, the detector control system, the data acquisition and the analysis programs. We present the performance in the relevant parameters that determine the quality of the muon measurement. We discuss the single element efficiency, resolution and noise rates, the calibration method of the detector response and of the alignment system, the track reconstruction efficiency and the momentum measurement. The results show that the detector i…
Hand verification for flexural strength of existing R.C. floors subject to degradation phenomena
2015
Abstract In the present paper, a simplified model for hand verification of the flexural and shear strength of existing corroded T beams cast in place of lightened R.C. orthotropic slabs forming floors is presented and discussed. Diffused and pitting corrosion on steel bars, compressive concrete strength degradation and concrete bond strength degradation are included in the model. The original contribution of the paper is evaluation of the flexural and shear strength considering both the cases of strain compatibility and absence of compatibility and considering the main parameters governing the corrosion process. An arch-resistant model for the calculus of the flexural and shear strength of …
A 5500-year oxygen isotope record of high arctic environmental change from southern Spitsbergen
2017
The oxygen isotope composition of chironomid head capsules in a sediment core spanning the past 5500 years from Lake Svartvatnet in southern Spitsbergen was used to reconstruct the oxygen isotope composition of lake water (δ18Olw) and local precipitation. The δ18Olw values display shifts from the baseline variability consistent with the timing of recognized historical climatic episodes, such as the Roman Warm Period, the Dark Ages Cold Period and the ‘Little Ice Age’. The highest values of the record, ca. 3‰ above modern δ18Olw values, occur at ca. 1900–1800 cal. yr BP. Three negative excursions increasing in intensity toward the present, at 3400–3200, 1250–1100, and 350–50 cal. yr BP, are…
Perceived minerality in sauvignon blanc wine: chemical reality or cultural construct?
2016
International audience; The study aimed to determine the relationship between perceived mineral character in wine and wine chemical composition. We investigated the sensory properties and chemical composition of sauvignon blanc wines from two major sauvignon-producing countries, New Zealand and France. Sensory experiments employing 16 wines (8 French, 8 New Zealand) were conducted in Marlborough, New Zealand and in three regions of France, namely Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Sancerre/Loire region. Wine professionals (31 New Zealanders and 32 French professionals) sensorially characterised the 16 wines under three conditions, bouquet only (ortho-nasal olfaction), palate only (nose clip condit…
Teachers' perceptions of student engagement and teacher self-efficacy beliefs
2014
This study examines the teachers’ perceptions of student engagement, teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs, and their interrelation. Affective engagement can be understood as belonging or relatedness as well as identification with school. Cognitive engagement can be conceived as engagement in classroom, self-regulation, learning goals and a student’s overall investment in learning. Measuring students’ engagement is crucial in that it helps educators predict and, by amending current teaching practices and policies, avoid poor performance or even drop-out. The teacher’s belief in herself and her potential is critical for the students’ overall performance in class. This study attempts to investigate…
