A coarse to fine 3D acquisition system
2015
International audience; The 3D chain (acquisition-processing-compression) is , most of the time , sequenced into several steps. Such approaches result into an one-dense acquisition of 3D points. In large scope of applications , the first processing step consists in simplifying the data. In this paper , we propose a coarse to fine acquisition system which permits to obtain simplified data directly from the acquisition. By calculating some complementary information from 2D images , such as 3D normals , multiple homogeneous regions will be segmented and affected to a given primitive class. Contrary to other studies , the whole process is not based on a mesh. The obtained model is simplified di…
Integration of 3D modelling with photogrammetry applied on historical images for cultural heritage
2023
The recovery of past architecture through 3D modelling is an important challenge today to the preservation of heritage. Decisive support for the interpretation of architecture can certainly come from historical images and old photographs that fix a portion of space at a specific time, keeping it unchanged over the years. This acquisition is decisive for studying architectures of the past that can be reinterpreted and analysed. Photos, in fact, capture the advance of time and the life of a building at a precise historical moment, becoming essential documents for the study and knowledge of heritage. An additional advantage is when these old images can be processed through Structure for Motion…
The application of 3d printing in plastic and reconstructive surgery: Case-control study in facial reconstruction
2017
The aim of this study was to explore the efficiency and usefulness of tridimensional printing in plastic and reconstructive surgery for lesions of the maxillofacial region. This was comparison study between two groups of patients. Six patients underwent surgical reconstruction, using a threedimensional model built on the basis of CT scans (group 1); and six patients underwent surgical reconstruction, without the use of a three-dimensional model (group 2). The following variables were evaluated: age, gender, histological diagnosis, cancer location, size of bone lesion, type of reconstruction, complications and surgical timing. A statistically significant difference was found in microsurgical…
Ernesto Basile e le Esposizioni Agricole Siciliane dei primi anni del ‘900
2020
In 1891 the IV Italian National Exposition was held in Palermo, the first to have a southern city as its protagonist. The area on which the pavilions were built, obtained from the expropriation of the land belonging to the Prince of Villafranca, lent itself from the following year to accommodate the housing development and new buildings to complete the Via della Libertà, a high-bourgeois boulevard that already in 1850, by cutting the same "Firriato" of the Villafranca family, had marked the expansion towards the north of the city and seen the construction of the first buildings on its eastern front. Ernesto Basile was one of the main designers of the event and future urban creations. Althou…
Survey and Photogrammetric Restitution of Monumental Complexes: Issues and Solutions—The Case of the Manfredonic Castle of Mussomeli
2019
The latest results obtained through photogrammetric restitution enhanced by GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) survey achieved increased levels of accuracy. These survey solutions are used to rapidly obtain a detailed model with an excellent level of accuracy (centimetric) with cheaper equipment. However, the contour conditions are not always favorable for obtaining the best results in a simple way. The work presented in this paper shows the survey and the photogrammetric restitution of the Manfredonic Castle of Mussomeli in Sicily, developed as a part of the PON NEPTIS European Project, aimed at the valorization of Cultural Heritage (CH). This case is a typ…
Vision metrology and Structure from Motion for archaeological heritage 3D reconstruction: A Case Study of various Roman mosaics
2017

Vision metrology and computer vision can be successfully used for archaeological heritage 3D reconstruction in very high precision 3D measurement projects. Of those archaeological objects requiring very accurate measurements (<1 mm), ancient mosaics comprise some of the most important. The aim of this paper is to assess the photogrammetric/computer vision approach in a vision metrology context as part of a 3D mosaics survey. In order to evaluate the optimal photogrammetric/computer vision workflow in this work, three different surveys were performed on three mosaics of different sizes and locations. Two of these are stored at the Antonino Salinas&l…
Riscoprire: forma e storia della Torre di Fuonti
2022
The defensive system of the Amalfi Coast represents a testimony of our past, to be known, preserved and protected, a heritage to be treasured and passed on. Despite the great importance and value, some towers have been abandoned because over the years becoming unfit for the use and obsolete. The role of virtual reconstruction, in this regard, is particularly important because it supports the valorization of the heritage, the knowledge of the territory and the dissemination of the culture of our country. The contribution is a part of a wider study aimed at the divulgation of the defensive system of the Amalfi Coast. The paper focuses on a tower named Torre della Punta di Fuenti (di Fuonti or…
Exploiting Low-Cost 3D Imagery for the Purposes of Detecting and Analyzing Pavement Distresses
2020
Road pavement conditions have significant impacts on safety, travel times, costs, and environmental effects. It is the responsibility of road agencies to ensure these conditions are kept in an acceptable state. To this end, agencies are tasked with implementing pavement management systems (PMSs) which effectively allocate resources towards maintenance and rehabilitation. These systems, however, require accurate data. Currently, most agencies rely on manual distress surveys and as a result, there is significant research into quick and low-cost pavement distress identification methods. Recent proposals have included the use of structure-from-motion techniques based on datasets from unmanned a…
In assenza di intervento. Rappresentazioni digitali di restauri virtuali
2015
Semantic-based Technique for the Automation the 3D Reconstruction Process
2010
Pages: 191 to 198, ISBN: 978-1-61208-104-5; International audience; The reconstruction of 3D objects based on point clouds data presents a major task in many application field since it consumes time and require human interactions to yield a promising result. Robust and quick methods for complete object extraction or identification are still an ongoing research topic and suffer from the complex structure of the data, which cannot be sufficiently modeled by purely numerical strategies. Our work aims at defining a new way of automatically and intelligently processing of 3D point clouds from a 3D laser scanner. This processing is based on the combination of 3D processing technologies and Semant…
