Experimental Procedures of Accelerated Aging and Evaluation of Effectiveness of Nanostructured Products for the Protection of Volterra (Italy) Panchi…

2022

The aims of the research were to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of nanostructured products on Volterra calcarenite stone and to define the experimental conditions and procedures of accelerated aging tests, able to simulate different degradation on the studied lithotype. The work focused on methods of performing accelerated aging tests in order to simulate different effects of environmental decay involving stone used on a historical site. The rock samples were examined before and after three treatment types: cyclic salt spray chamber, cycles of freezing–thawing and cycles of thermal shock. After each artificial aging cycle, changes in appearance were noted and chemical and phy…

Narratives by women managers about spousal support for their careers

2014

In this article we present a qualitative study of spousal support for the careers of women managers. The research material consists of the narratives of 25 women managers in Finland. The study has two main implications. Firstly, unlike previous studies, we use a narrative approach to demonstrate that a woman manager's career and spousal support are experienced as ambiguous and evolving over the career. The support was constructed by the women managers as flourishing, irrelevant, deficient or inconsistent. Secondly, to increase our knowledge about gender relations, we combine discussion of the topic with gender order analysis and suggest that gender order is critical for an understanding of …

Narratives in L2 Learner Identity Development

2019

This article focuses on second or foreign language (L2) learner identity and its development as discursively constructed, and we will summarize four studies conducted on this topic. The studies were conducted in the context of L2 teacher education in Finland, and the participants were student teachers (pre-service teachers) or recently qualified teachers of English or other L2s. As data we made use of narratives in different modes (oral, written, visual). The summarizing of the studies will be followed by a joint critical discussion of the theoretical and methodological lessons learned and possible applications. peerReviewed

Towards Socio-material Research Approaches in Language Education

2022

AbstractThis chapter outlines the socio-material framing of the book that it opens. We situate this volume materially not only in the discipline of applied linguistics and language education, but also in the long tradition of applied language studies at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and the community there. In doing so, the book builds on the authors’ roots in social constructionist thought and explicates why an orientation towards new materialism may be useful for a consideration of equity issues in language education. Socio-materialism fosters a critical, transformative perspective and encourages an ontological ethical grounding of research, thus providing a starting point for re…

Les anglicismes en français et en tcheque contemporains : le cas des formes en-ing

2020

The aim of this study is to analyze the neological borrowings from English that occur in contemporary French and Czech. Special emphasis is placed on neological borrowings with the -ing suffix. Owing to the status of Anglo-American as a lingua franca, Anglicisms affect all languages. This study investigates more specifically the processes involved in these -ing constructions. After a quantitative analysis of the respective diffusion and productivity in both languages, we focus on a few specific words (phishing, géocaching, sharing, washing), attested in both languages, and compare their integration from several perspectives (phonological, orthographical, morphological, semantic and local va…

Brain Source Correlates of Speech Perception and Reading Processes in Children With and Without Reading Difficulties

2022

Neural correlates in reading and speech processing have been addressed extensively in the literature. While reading skills and speech perception have been shown to be associated with each other, their relationship remains debatable. In this study, we investigated reading skills, speech perception, reading, and their correlates with brain source activity in auditory and visual modalities. We used high-density event-related potentials (ERPs), fixation-related potentials (FRPs), and the source reconstruction method. The analysis was conducted on 12–13-year-old schoolchildren who had different reading levels. Brain ERP source indices were computed from frequently repeated Finnish speech stimuli…

Identity exploration through given names

2018

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten alakouluikäiset oppilaat luovat merkityksiä etunimelleen ja lempinimelleen sekä rakentavat identiteettiään käsitellessään nimeään. Nimen ja identiteetin merkityksellinen yhteys on havaittu aiemmassa kirjallisuudessa; aihe on kuitenkin saanut verrattain vähän huomiota aiemmissa suomalaisissa tutkimuksissa. Kahdeksantoista 6. luokan oppilasta osallistui tiedon tuottamiseen. Osallistujat valmistivat portfolion ja jälkikäteen 12 heistä osallistui puolistrukturoituun haastatteluun. Osallistujien narratiivit analysointiin tulkitsevalla diskurssinanalyysillä. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että tutkimukseen osallistuneet 6.-luokkalaiset rakentavat …

Non-linear analysis of plane steel prestressed truss in fire

2002

The concept of analysis of 2-D static loaded prestressed steel trusses till failure during fire using a modified method of forces is presented. Failure of steel trusses in fire is based on the criterion of stresses. Behaviour of steel is described by non-linear constitutive model (based on hypo-elastic Ramberg-Osgood formula and Dorn creep theory) and Plem proposition (for string). Both models are approximated in calculations by hyperbolic Norton-Bailey rule. Fire simulates thermal force as an action of high temperature that increases linearly up to some level. The complete formulation of this method is illustrated by the algorithm of model parameters identification. Analysis of results for…
