All good things come in threes: the third image of the lensed quasar PKS1830-211

2020

Strong gravitational lensing distorts our view of sources at cosmological distances but brings invaluable constraints on the mass content of foreground objects and on the geometry and properties of the Universe. We report the detection of a third continuum source toward the strongly lensed quasar PKS1830-211 in ALMA multi-frequency observations of high dynamic range and high angular resolution. This third source is point-like and located slightly to the north of the diagonal joining the two main lensed images, A and B, 0.3 arcsec away from image B. It has a flux density that is ~140 times weaker than images A and B and a similar spectral index, compatible with synchrotron emission. We concl…

Phonons in an inhomogeneous continuum: Vibrations of an embedded nanoparticle

2004

The spectrum of acoustic vibrational modes of an inhomogeneous elastic continuum are analyzed with application to a spherical nanoparticle embedded in an infinite glass block. The relationship of these modes to the discrete vibrational spectrum of a free sphere is studied. The vibrational modes of a sphere with a fixed surface are relevant in some situations. Comparisons are also made to calculations of mode frequency and damping based on complex valued frequency.

XMM-Newton First-Light Observations of the Hickson Galaxy Group 16

2000

This paper presents the XMM-Newton first-light observations of the Hickson-16 compact group of galaxies. Groups are possibly the oldest large-scale structures in the Universe, pre-dating clusters of galaxies, and are highly evolved. This group of small galaxies, at a redshift of 0.0132 (or 80 Mpc) is exceptional in the having the highest concentration of starburst or AGN activity in the nearby Universe. So it is a veritable laboratory for the study of the relationship between galaxy interactions and nuclear activity. Previous optical emission line studies indicated a strong ionising continuum in the galaxies, but its origin, whether from starbursts, or AGN, was unclear. Combined imaging and…

Theoretical study of the discrete and continuum spectrum of BeH

2008

The transition intensities supplied in this Letter are directly connected with a description of the discrete and continuum spectrum of BeH. An attempt to meet our goal requires the calculation of the absorption oscillator strengths of several transitions to Rydberg states of BeH, together with differential oscillator strengths which give rise to different dipole-allowed photoionization channels from the molecular ground state. The calculations have been performed with the molecular-adapted quantum defect orbital (MQDO) approach. Predictions of new spectroscopic data on BeH at energies where high Rydberg transitions can take place, including the continuum region of the spectrum have been mad…

Correlation effects in proton transfer reactions in solution

1996

Abstract The effects of correlation energy on proton transfer reactions in solution for [H 2 OHOH 2 ] + and [NH 3 HH 2 O] + systems have been studied. Solvent effects have been represented by means of a continuum model. The proton transfer energy profiles for fixed proton donor-proton acceptor distances have been obtained in the gas phase and in solution, both at the HF/6-311G ∗∗ and MP2/6-311G ∗∗ //HF levels of theory. Differences between the correlation energies calculated in the gas phase and in solution are negligible, showing that solvent effects can be correctly described for these proton transfer processes at the HF level.

The ALHAMBRA survey: Discovery of a faint QSO at z = 5.41

2013

[Aims]: We aim to illustrate the potentiality of the Advanced Large, Homogeneous Area, Medium-Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey to investigate the high-redshift universe through the detection of quasi stellar objects (QSOs) at redshifts higher than 5. [Methods]: We searched for QSOs candidates at high redshift by fitting an extensive library of spectral energy distributions-including active and non-active galaxy templates, as well as stars-to the photometric database of the ALHAMBRA survey (composed of 20 optical medium-band plus the 3 broad-band JHKs near-infrared filters). [Results]: Our selection over ≈1 square degree of ALHAMBRA data (∼1/4 of the total area covered by the sur…

Nonperturbative renormalization constants and light quark masses

2002

We present the results of an extensive non-perturbative calculation of the renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for the non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson action. The results are obtained at four values of the lattice coupling, by using the RI/MOM and the Ward identities methods. A new non-perturbative renormalization technique, which is based on the study of the lattice correlation functions at short distance in x-space, is also numerically investigated. We then use our non-perturbative determination of the quark mass renormalization constants to compute the values of the strange and the average up/down quark masses. After performing an extrapolation to the continuum …

Electrostatic interaction of a solute with a continuum. Improved description of the cavity and of the surface cavity bound charge distribution.

1987

Algorithms for a finer description of cavities in continuous media and for a more efficient selection of sampling points on the cavity surface are described. Applications to the evaluation of solute surface and volume and to the calculation of the solute-solvent electrostatic interaction energy, as well as of the cavitation energy are shown as examples.

Gli strumenti per le imprese: I servizi di consulenza alle imprese e i sistemi assicurativi

2023

The interventions for the agricultural sector identified by the new CAP (according to the provisions of art. 69 of reg. 2115/2022) provide, among others, the exchange of knowledge and the dissemination of information (letter h) and tools for risk management (letter f). Within the former, a central role is played by business consultancy services which, according to the provisions of Article 15 of Reg. 2115/2021, will have to assist companies with regard to at least all management requirements, conditions and commitments applicable to farmers and other beneficiaries established in the CAP strategic plan, including requirements and rules under the conditionality and conditions for intervention…

Neutral Iron Emission Lines From The Day-side Of KELT-9b -- The GAPS Programme With HARPS-N At TNG XX

2020

We present the first detection of atomic emission lines from the atmosphere of an exoplanet. We detect neutral iron lines from the day-side of KELT-9b (Teq $\sim$ 4, 000 K). We combined thousands of spectrally resolved lines observed during one night with the HARPS-N spectrograph (R $\sim$ 115, 000), mounted at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We introduce a novel statistical approach to extract the planetary parameters from the binary mask cross-correlation analysis. We also adapt the concept of contribution function to the context of high spectral resolution observations, to identify the location in the planetary atmosphere where the detected emission originates. The average planetary li…
