Cyanide inhibits respiration yet stimulates aerobic growth of Zymomonas mobilis

Potassium cyanide at submillimolar concentrations (20-500 microM) inhibited the high respiration rates of aerobic cultures of Zymomonas mobilis but, remarkably, stimulated culture growth. In batch culture, after an extended lag phase, exponential growth persisted longer, resulting in higher biomass densities. In aerobic chemostat cultures, elevated biomass concentration was observed in the presence of cyanide. This growth stimulation effect is attributed to decreased production of the inhibitory metabolite acetaldehyde at lowered respiration rates, when more reducing equivalents are channelled to alcohol dehydrogenase. The context of this work is space mechanics. More precisely, we aim at computing low thrust transfers in the Earth-Moon system modeled by the circular restricted three-body problem. The goal is to calculate the optimal steering of the spacecraft engine with respect to two optimization criteria: Final time and fuel consumption. The contributions of this thesis are of two kinds. Différentes stratégies visant à favoriser l’acceptation d’aliments sont décrites. Il s’agit de l’exposition répétée (RE), de l’association flaveur-flaveur (AFF) et de l’association flaveur-nutriment (AFN).
