Enabling early sleeping and early data transmission in wake-up radio-enabled IoT networks

2019

Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are one of the key enabling technologies for the Internet of things (IoT). In such networks, wake-up radio (WuR) is gaining its popularity thanks to its on-demand transmission feature and overwhelming energy consumption superiority. Despite this advantage, overhearing still occurs when a wake-up receiver decodes the address of a wake-up call (WuC) which is not intended to it, causing a certain amount of extra energy waste in the network. Moreover, long latency may occur due to WuC address decoding since WuCs are transmitted at a very low data rate. In this paper, we propose two schemes, i.e., early sleeping (ES) and early data transmission (EDT), to …

Ultra-Low Power Wake-up Radio for 5G IoT

2019

5G Internet of Things (5G IoT), which is currently under development by 3GPP, paves the way for connecting diverse categories of devices to the IoT via cellular networks. For battery-powered low-cost IoT devices, wake-up radio (WuR) appears as an eminent technique for prolonging the lifetime of such devices, thanks to its outstanding energy consumption performance. However, only some small-size battery-powered IoT devices are able to transmit to a cellular IoT base station (BS) directly. In this article, we present W2B-IoT, a prototype implementation of a WuR-based two-tier system, which bridges cellular IoT BS and WuR via a Bluetooth low energy (BLE)-enabled Android smartphone. Such a WuR-…

A Communication-Aware Topological Mapping Technique for NoCs

2008

Networks---on---Chip (NoCs) have been proposed as a promising solution to the complex on-chip communication problems derived from the increasing number of processor cores. The design of NoCs involves several key issues, being the topological mapping (the mapping of the Intellectual Properties (IPs) to network nodes) one of them. Several proposals have been focused on topological mapping last years, but they require the experimental validation of each mapping considered. In this paper, we propose a communication-aware topological mapping technique for NoCs. This technique is based on the experimental correlation of the network model with the actual network performance, thus avoiding the need…

Quantitative assessment of the parameters linked to the blending between reclaimed asphalt binder and recycling agent: A literature review

2020

Abstract The lack of understanding the mechanisms governing the interaction between reclaimed asphalt binder (RAb) 1 and recycling agents is one of the technical issues that still need to be resolved when high amount of reclaimed asphalt (RA) 2 is used in a new recycled asphalt mixture (RAM). Due to important role of RAb in that interaction and increased used of RA, it becomes necessary to have a way to classify RA, as any other material used in asphalt mixture production. It is very important to determine how much RAb is active by itself (DoA) 3 , but also to determine how much RAb can be considered available for a mix design of RAM (DoAv) 4 when a recycling agent is used. Finally, since t…

Efficient cluster-based routing algorithm for body sensor networks

2018

International audience; Body Sensor Networks have gained a lot of research interest lately for the variety of applications they can serve. In such networks where nodes might hold critical information about people's lives, designing efficient routing schemes is very important to guarantee data delivery with the lowest delay and energy consumption. Even though some cluster-based routing schemes were proposed in the literature, none of them offer a complete solution that guarantees energy and delay efficient routing in BSN. In this paper, we propose a robust cluster- based algorithm that increases the routing efficiency through every step of the routing process: cluster formation, cluster head…

A decentralized load control architecture for smart energy consumption in small islands

2020

Abstract In this paper we propose the adoption of Overgrid, a new decentralized load control architecture, for balancing the energy production variations introduced with the adoption of renewable sources, facilitating and improving the smart energy retrofit. The system is presented and applied for managing the aggregated daily load profile of a community of domestic end-users in the island of Lampedusa, Italy, exploiting the load profiles gathered in a real measurement campaign. The Overgrid Demand Response (DR) architecture is used for managing the residential flexible loads, estimating the aggregated power demand without any centralized server and creating a virtual “community” of smart b…

Green food processing: concepts, strategies, and tools

2019

Abstract One of the developmental aspects of food science is testing and adapting advanced technologies for food production, which save resources and improve food quality. More often than not, this includes technologies operating at lower temperatures, shorter time, and resulting in better preservation of the thermolabile compounds in the foods, as compared to conventional technologies. Nutritionally rich but thermally sensitive raw materials such as fruit, vegetables, meats, and others can particularly benefit from the application of such advanced food technologies. Technologies with the most tested potential for industrial implementation include nonthermal plasma, pulsed electric field, h…

Energy Conscious Building Design

1987

Since the beginning of energy crisis many design tools have been developed in order to enable the designer to cope with energy consumption in buildings. These tools are of different kind: from very sophisticated simulation models to simplified (often too much) methods. Each of them offers various advantages and disadvantages, and it is up to the designer to choose among them.

Measurement, Prediction, and Control of Individual Heart Rate Responses to Exercise-Basics and Options for Wearable Devices.

2018

The use of wearable devices or "wearables" in the physical activity domain has been increasing in the last years. These devices are used as training tools providing the user with detailed information about individual physiological responses and feedback to the physical training process. Advantages in sensor technology, miniaturization, energy consumption and processing power increased the usability of these wearables. Furthermore, available sensor technologies must be reliable, valid, and usable. Considering the variety of the existing sensors not all of them are suitable to be integrated in wearables. The application and development of wearables has to consider the characteristics of the p…

Fuzzy Logic based model for self-optimizing energy consumption in IoT environment

2021

Energy optimization is essential in IoT environments due to energy constraints for some IoT components. In fact, energy consumption has a direct impact on IoT system lifetime, which represents an important Quality of Service (QoS) parameter for IoT environments. In order to extend the IoT system lifetime, energy consumption optimization should be considered in several IoT components. In this paper, we specify an energy self-optimizing mechanism allowing to minimize data transmission energy consumption of IoT objects. This mechanism enables selecting specific objects to send the desired data while minimizing the energy consumed for the corresponding communication. Our proposal is made of a M…
