TNFα Primes Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes for an Enhanced Respiratory Burst to a Similar Extent As Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide
1990
We examined whether preincubating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) with TNF alpha would result in an enhanced respiratory burst upon subsequent stimulation by various agents. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a known primer of PMN, was used as control. We found that both LPS (0.01 to 10.0 microgram/ml) and recombinant TNF alpha (0.001 to 1.0 microgram/ml) act as direct stimulants of PMN as measured by chemiluminescence. Sixty minutes of preincubation of PMN with 1 microgram/ml TNF alpha or 10 micrograms/ml LPS resulted in similar priming for the respiratory burst elicited by opsonized zymosan, phorbol myristate acetate, zymosan, zymosan-activated serum, aggregated immunoglobulin, and f-…
Literature and Interpretative Communities - Literary Communication: On Relevant Concepts and Empirical Applications in Finland
1990
The interaction between a literary text and its readers is controlled by a variety of commercial, cultural and other factors. In literary communication, that which is aesthetically mediated enters the practical world of moral values or knowledge. Depending on the point of view adopted, we speak of the 'consumption', the 'use', or 'the reception' of literary works and their message The article discusses both the relevant concepts of literary com municatton and their empirical applications in Finland. The main focus is on studies that have shed light on the themes connected with the concept of intepretative community' Research findings concerning the temporal meaning shifts of literary works…
A trade-off between current and future sex allocation revealed by maternal energy budget in a small mammal.
2011
Sex-allocation theories generally assume differential fitness costs of raising sons and daughters. Yet, experimental confirmation of such costs is scarce and potential mechanisms are rarely addressed. While the most universal measure of physiological costs is energy expenditure, only one study has related the maternal energy budget to experimentally controlled offspring sex. Here, we experimentally test this in the bank vole (Myodes glareolus) by simultaneously manipulating the litter's size and sex ratio immediately after birth. Two weeks after manipulation, when mothers were at the peak of lactation and were pregnant with concurrent litters, we assessed their energy budget. We found that …
Is reproduction really costly? Energy metabolism of bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) females through the reproductive cycle
2007
Energetic requirements during reproduction are important determinants of the onset of reproduction and of breeding strategy (e.g., breeding post-partum) and therefore affect female reproductive output in seasonally varying environments. To balance the energetic needs of breeding with energy availability, females must optimize energy allocation between their own energy use and energy allocated to their litter. Here, we studied energetic costs and potential energetic trade-offs of reproduction in female bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus). We measured energy consumption, i.e., metabolic rates as determined from carbon dioxide production of females either with their pups (breeding unit) to fi…

Catastrophic health expenditure: A comparative analysis of smoking and non-smoking households in China.
2020
Introduction Smoking is hazardous to health and places a heavy economic burden on individuals and their families. Clearly, smoking in China is prevalent since China is the largest consumer of tobacco in the world. Chinese smoking and nonsmoking households were compared in terms of the incidence and intensity of Catastrophic Health Expenditures (CHEs). The factors associated with catastrophic health expenditures were analyzed. Methods Data for this study were collected from two waves of panel data in 2011 and 2013 from the national China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 8073 households with at least one member aged above 45 were identified each year. Catastrophic…
Dynamic Resource Allocation and Computation Offloading for Edge Computing System
2020
In this work, we propose a dynamic optimization scheme for an edge computing system with multiple users, where the radio and computational resources, and offloading decisions, can be dynamically allocated with the variation of computation demands, radio channels and the computation resources. Specifically, with the objective to minimize the energy consumption of the considered system, we propose a joint computation offloading, radio and computational resource allocation algorithm based on Lyapunov optimization. Through minimizing the derived upper bound of the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty function, the main problem is divided into several sub-problems at each time slot and are addressed sepa…
Fish and human health: an umbrella review of observational studies
2022
Fish represents one of the most important dietary sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are known to be associated with various health benefits. This study aimed to systematically review existing meta-analyses of observational studies exploring the association between fish intake and various health outcomes. A systematic search of electronic databases was conducted to retrieve a total of 63 studies. Evidence was deemed as possible for the association between higher fish intake and decreased risk of the acute coronary syndrome, liver cancer, and depression, and limited for other outcomes (including age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, heart failure, all-caus…
Consumo, risparmio, rimesse, Una proposta di analisi
2021
Il saggio analizza le dinamiche di risparmio, consumo e rimesse dei cittadini migranti con una proposta di analisi Recently, the theme of integration through consumption has been addressed by analyzing the strategies implemented by migrant citizens who, precisely through the assimilation and reproduction of the host country's cons…
Statistical Analysis of the Indicators that have Influenced the Standard of Living in Romania During the Economic Crisis
2015
Abstract As all the countries in the world, Romania is going through a period of large and deep economic, financial and social changes. The negative effects of the economic crisis are well known: Increase of unemployment rate, sharp decrease of incomes because of the imposed political measures and decrease of purchasing power resulting in a decrease of the quality of life. The quality of life may be assessed based on several macroeconomic indicators, such as: GD per capita, population incomes or expenses, population consumption, indicators that are the foundation of the analyses that may help taking decisions regarding the social and economic policies aimed to the increase of the standard o…
