Teologia między słowem i milczeniem

2019

"That's Real! That's What You Want!": Producing Fear in George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978) vs Zack Snyder's remake (2004)

2011

International audience; This article examines traditional oppositions between terror and horror in Dawn of the Dead (1978) and its recent remake (2004), by focusing on one of the major changes made by the producers of the remake: the use of running zombies, which emphasizes the danger the creatures represent to the characters, and enables the film-makers to resort to the kind of cheap startle effects that abound in contemporary slasher and action movies. That the living dead of 1978 were slow-moving allowed for contemplation of their pathetic state and questioned the border between living and dead. The 1978 film underlined how incompatible the living dead were with such techniques that rely…

Thomas MacGreevy and Samuel Beckett. Affinity and Controversy

2012

Acquainted with Beckett in (1928) Parisian Ecole Normale, Thomas MacGreevy soon became his confidant and a literary mentor introducing him to James Joyce and Richard Aldington. Their artistic interests took form, among others, of the common declaration “Manifesto. Poetry is Vertical” (1932), signed by them and several other poets associated with Jolas’s transition. However, the intellectual attraction between the two was, at the same time, disturbed, or, so to say, spiced, by the tension between Beckett’s agnosticism and MacGreevy’s Catholicism. Sean Kennedy’s illuminating article (“Beckett Reviewing MacGreevy: A Reconsideration,” in; The Irish University Review, September 2005, pp. 273–288…

Conclusion: Discourses and Dreams on Becoming

2019

The contents in the chapters in this book have shown how ECEC institutions are both globally linked and locally constructed within networks of powers, discourses, philosophies, paradoxes and practices. The kinds of ‘becoming(s)’ that arise for these young children as a consequence are different – in an increasingly globalised world, we think, these are of great significance in thinking about the present and future realities that are posed accordingly. Thus, with this concluding chapter, we seek to address existing and future challenges, dreams and opportunities in contemplation of a future that we can only imagine, in consideration of the practices and discourses that structure becoming(s) …

Open-air Conservation of Ruins and the Concept of “Non-Dislocation”

2012

Most of the on-going debate is about “how” to protect archaeological ruins, whilst at the same time allowing the general public to enjoy them. Today it is clear how important it is, from the actual planning stages of excavations, to interact with experts from other disciplines, who are working on their own findings and offering them up for collective enjoyment. Whatever might be feasible for an indoor museum is not always feasible with an architectonic ruin, as regards both presenting objects with explicative apparatus that determines their significance, and exploring them in a new way when interpretations change or new ideologies are introduced. First of all, conserving excavations is the …

Nature Inspired Scenes for Guided Mindfulness Training: Presence, Perceived Restorativeness and Meditation Depth

2019

Practicing mindfulness-based stress reeducation and other contemplative practices generates a number of health and human performance benefits. However, limited access to qualified training and practice support, as well as poor practice environments, makes it difficult to sustain the habits necessary to develop the attentional regulation skills needed to benefit from mindfulness. In this paper, we report on our research, which focuses on developing immersive environments to support mindfulness-based stress reduction practices. We specifically look at how the design of a virtual environment can foster a restorative experience, if that restorative experience is associated with the depth of the…

A View from the Garden: Contemplative Isolation and Constructive Sociability in Lucretius and in the Epicurean Tradition

2021

It is often assumed that Epicurean philosophy and its foremost Roman prophet, T. Lucretius Carus, adopted a deeply hostile attitude towards both politics and religion. Individualistic (or even solipsistic) interpretations of Epicureanism – as well as of the Epicurean catechism of De Rerum Natura – have long co-existed with, and provided support to, the claim that the Epicureans attached little value to religious experiences. In the present paper, I shall argue that, in this and many other respects, the modern reception of Epicureanism – with its brave aspirations after the liberation of science from social and religious restraints – has had undue influence on our understanding of De Rerum N…

Kontemplativ, handlingsrettet spiritualitet - Stille stund og ledelse i Oxfordbevegelsen belyst ved nedtegnelser fra Erling Wikborg

2014

Author's version of an article in the journal: Teologisk tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/tt/2014/04/kontemplativ_handlingsrettet_spiritualitet_-_stille_stund_ Contemplation and belief in guidance from God had a distinct design in the international ecumenical revival the Oxford Group which gained great support in the interwar period. In this movement, contemplation, called quiet time, was focused on intention and action in order to grasp and carry out God’s guidance. The article examines teaching about and practice of quiet time and guidance in the Oxford Group and shows how these phenomena relate to a broader historical context within Christianity. Note…

The ‘Perfected System of Criticism’: Schopenhauer's Initial Disagreements with Kant

2012

AbstractI would like to know who of mycontemporaries should be more competent inKantian philosophy than me.(Schopenhauer in a letter to Rosenkranz and Schubert, 18371)In this paper the attempt is made to show how Schopenhauer's critique of Kant leads from initial disagreements to a fundamental modification, even a new formation, of the Kantian concepts of understanding, reason, imagination, perception, idea and thing-in-itself. The starting point and the core of his critique is the demand for the appreciation of intuitive knowledge which is apart from and independent of reason. The intuitive knowledge goes back to images and its highest form is aesthetic contemplation. Without a participati…
